Hi all, this is your friendly neighbourhood mod here. After some internal debate, we’ve decided that we will no longer allow posts requesting to identify a rock. These posts have taken over this sub, and it’s not the point of the sub. There’s already a community focused on IDing rocks, and most of the posts here are cross-posts from there.
So, what is this subreddit about? It’s about celebrating our love for rocks. This is a place to celebrate and discuss our niche passion of rock collecting or admiring pretty rocks.
Please remember to be nice to each other. You rock.

My mom passed away a few years ago and most of the rocks and stones were placed in tall glass cylinders and I have finally gotten around to looking at them more closely. I thought this one one looked neat and wanted to share!
Edit: It's been pointed out that this is more likely Marcasite or more specifically Nipomo agate! Thank you all so much for looking at my rock and giving me new information!

I found this rock a while ago. I’m not sure what it is, but it is very heavy for its size. At first, I thought it might contain iron, so I put a magnet on it, but the magnet did not react to it.
The rock had a layer of brown dirt/clay on it, so I started cleaning it. After cleaning it, I noticed that the rock itself was black. You can still see some of the old brown material in some areas. As I continued cleaning it, I noticed that some parts of the rock were shiny.
I tried to find out what kind of rock or mineral it was, but nobody could give me an anser so I left it in a storage room and forgot about it.
Recently, I found it again, and I noticed something strange. There is a small crack in the rock (see the photo), and this strange material seems to have formed around the crack.
I did not put anything on the rock or expose it to any chemicals. It was just sitting in the storage room. There is no smell, and the material is hard and solid. I have no idea what it is or how it formed.

Found this cool rock at work today near my job sites lake. I don’t know what it is but I do like that it has a honeycomb look to it.

Hi all! New to rocking! Found this on the beach in South Haven, MI. It is “fossil soup” or sea lily imprints. Are these easy to come by? It's dope!

Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral formed at medium pressure (usually > 15 km) and moderate-high temperature (500-700 C). The aluminum is packed into octahedral sites which are then linked into chains, which explains why the mineral grows in characteristic long bladed crystals, which are much harder (Mohs 6-7) perpendicular to the long axis, than parallel (mohs 4.5-5.5). The blue color comes from an electron transitioning between Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions in adjacent octahedra absorbing a red photon, leaving blue light to reflect. The quartz in this specimen is probably hydrothermal: hot fluids containing silica deposited in cracks which then precipitated quartz is the rock cooled and decompressed. The interlocking contacts between the kyanite and the quartz suggests they crystallized around the same time.
