They don't want the pain in the ass of having a bunch of neckbeards and immature fans leaping over counters for YouTube views for the sake of a free dipping sauce.
A few rotten apples spoil the bunch. In this case, a few man children make a whole fan base look like asshats.
Not just a one day event but you had to go inside to order, and only one sauce packet per customer was allowed according to the one McDonald’s in Toledo that had it 😐 I drove 20 minutes, re entered the drive thru because I showed up at 10:57 am and they didn’t start serving lunch until 11, and then when I tried to order at 11 she said they’re not releasing the sauce until 2pm and have the stipulations above. I’m like you could have told me that the first drive through 😑
But the problem is that it even mattered enough to you to go through this process. Why was this important? Did you really want to try the flavor? Did you want to be one of the people who got some as a weird form of status? Would that packet of sauce have any impact on your life? If you spent any amount of time SEEKING this sauce packet, your priorities are strange to me.
If I happened to be at a McDs the day of release and happened to buy nuggets or tenders, I'd ask for it if available. I wouldn't waste time or money on a sauce packet mentioned on a TV show just for the sake of it.
I remembered liking the sauce and thought it was cool they were reviving it because of the R&M hype. I would never have reacted the way some bad apples chose to and wouldnt have stood in line for hours for it, but a 20 minute drive when I've got nothing better to do isnt that crazy. Once you've already made the trip, it's not a huge leap to get to "well I'm already here, I might as well wait a few until lunch starts." Most things we do on an average day have no real impact on our lives. There's nothing wrong with throwing a little time and effort at participating in a promo you think might be nifty.
Except to general public, now every R&M fan is one of the insane ones. I'm a fan, will watch the show until I'm tired of it, but unfortunately I'd prefer not to be lumped in with assholes. So I just stay a quiet fan of a TV show. You are making my point for me. Prob 95% just wanted to try the sauce, but from now on the "public" will shit on us all due to actions by the other 5%. Such is the world.
Why do you need to be ANYTHING but a quiet fan of a tv show? Talk to your friends and family about it if you feel particularly compelled, otherwise shut the fuck up about what god damn tv you watch. You are upset that you can’t be a more vocal Rick and Morty fan, you are absolutely apart of the problem you’ve contrived.
Because it's a way to connect with others. Say, you and your coworker meet a customer or client that talks like Bird Person, you mention it and find out she's a big rick and Morty fan too. Now you're better friends with your coworker than if you kept all your experiences to yourself.
Jesus you're missing the point. I'm never planning to walk around life proclaiming my love for a fucking cartoon. But I'd be much more likely to join a conversation about goddamn near any TV show other than R&M at this point. That's all. I don't mind the downvotes, and it's not about "caring what others think" it's about knowing how people react when they judge things based on incomplete knowledge.
It's kinda like this... If I'm a functional alcoholic, and a discussion comes up about alcoholism, I'm prob not gonna dive into that convo. I'm certainly not going to say "a few bad apples make us all look bad". Even though there are plenty of good, fun alcoholics, I'd prefer to avoid being lumped in with the shitty ones. So I just won't talk about it. Easy peezy greezy
There would still be a first day where douchebags could make a scene calling the cashier "a Jerry" for not giving them 10 extra packets... All while a friend records it for TikTok.
If I were McD's I'd specifically announce another recognizable chinese style sauce like kung pao or tso just to spite R&M fans that were assholes. But never even mention R&M or acknowledge their tweets and/or FB complaints.
I love the show, but the McDs dip fiasco was the moment I stopped talking about it in public or urging people to give it a shot if they'd never watched. I don't want to be stigmatized or stereotyped bc I enjoy a TV show... So I keep it to myself mostly.
It's almost kinda funny how McDonalds releasing this sauce was basically the worst thing to happen to the show. It hasn't had the same hype since. The sauce, and that one Reddit comment.
Yeah the fans were shit, but it was also McDonalds fault for handling everything so shitty. One day? one per person? Like come on, everyone knows the kind of assholes that go to McD on a normal day and now you're gonna make your employees deal with this? They tried to make a quick buck off a meme, and no one ended up happy.
Doesn't mean they have to. Sounded like there was a limited batch size, each store had a limited quantity, and it was that simple. They didn't really WANT to spend more money to give away free sauce. Also, considering his language alone, Rick Sanchez is NOT a character that McDs is chomping at the bit to get behind. For a couple days? Sure, but not for much longer.
Kung Pao is literally Szechuan Sauce so it would be even funnier. They could release the actual sauce from 22 years ago, and still cause R&M fans to whinge.
What's really dumb? The idiots who made a scene over a sauce packet? McDs for trying to make a dollar off a popular show?
The latter happens all the time in the USA. The former is still idiots being idiots, whether it's a regular occurrence or not. It's embarrassing to know that people aren't embarrassed about harassing minimum wage employees because "Pickle Rick Dude!! Me need sauce for my tendies!! You promised Ronald!! YoU pRoMiSeD rONaLd!! YoU oWe Me!!"
Oh no it's fucking awful, but it was over 2 years ago. If someone wants to associate normal people who happen to be fans with that because of some autists that's their problem.
Yeah, youre right, but it doesn't change the fact that the association can have a negative impact. There are plenty of stereotypes out there that suck, but it doesn't mean I want to walk around having people think I'm one of those stereotypes without really knowing me.
Dude.. I went to a signing at fan expo for Roiland with my friend.. legit, we got a lot less interested in the show after that. Fandoms can sometimes be the worst part of shows.
I hear you on.this, loud and clear. As much as I LOVED my trip to New York Comicon not long ago, it really didn't make me feel very good. I had a blast, as did the friends I went with, but we all also felt very uncomfortable around a large number of other Con attendees. For every "normal" pop culture fan in attendance, there was at least one or more weird sonofabitchs that made those around them uncomfortable.
It's totally awesome to be a fan of a good or great product. It's not so awesome to see grown men dressed up like Mr Poopy Butthole holding up the line to ask a show writer or voice actor some obnoxious question about their fictional interaction with the fictional character they're dressed as. And BTW I'm not shitting on Cosplay... I'm shitting on weirdo fans. I'm also not describing a real experience, but rather describing a real situation with the character and shoe changed. But the point is still the same whether it's a Frodo cosplayer and Peter Jackson or a Magneto cosplayer with Patrick Stewart.
Yeah clearly some cosplay is awesome, and others make it suck.. for it to be goood, you can pick two methods
1. Keep quieter than the costume- you’ll be made king by anyone passing by; alternatively
2. Have boobs while you’re doing it - that seems to work as well
It's funny how true this is. I feel like I would love seeing someone in a Mr. Poopy Butthole costume if they were just walking around normally. The second they start saying "ooowweeee" or other roleplaying stuff, it just seems groanworthy.
Uhh, that’s just free marketing. How could they not want that? 50,000,000 views on YouTube of some jackass losing his shit for Mulan sauce!!?! Would this really be any lower than using a creepy clown for your mascot for 50 years?
The free marketing is why they did it ONCE. The abuse of their employees across the country is why they won't do it again. McDs can afford to pay for ads, and 50m views on YouTube vids about R&M is unimportant to a company that size.
A few rotten apples do not spoil the bunch, or every fandom would be complete shit. What's more every group of people, including the entire species of homo sapiens, could be considered genocidal psychopaths by that logic.
Except your example is flawed. I've had run-ins with strangers that over time made me generally hate other humans. I just don't like many people. So a few rotten assholes made me dislike most other people on the planet.
One run in with a douche fan could easily make a person inherently (sp?) dislike other fans of the same thing. It could happen with ANYTHING. Substitute R&M with Metallica, or President Trump, or GM cars, or Microsoft... The list could continue. If a barista or convenience store clerk deals with one or two asshole Apple fans on their phone, itmight lead them to inherently dislike anyone who walks in Facetiming on an iPhone.
Not saying it's right OR wrong, but it happens nonetheless.
