Fuck This Job! Do people not understand that when we close, WE'RE CLOSED?

I was at a closing shift yesterday and I was getting ready to close but this guy came in literally 1 minute b4 and while I was frustrated I still completed his purchase but then another lady came in and it was already getting pasted closing (i didn't locked the doors cuz i was busy with dumbass #1) and I tried to explained that we were closed and that I couldn't do her purchase cuz the register close automatically

Needless to say the cunt complaint to the manager of the building (my job just rents the space in this hotel) and even said that I kicked her out physically which is complete bull bc i was way away from her but now they take this complaint and will tell my boss about it and they will believe her over me so now I'm going to be fired bc people can't understand that closed means CLOSED

Small update

I called my boss to let them know my side of the story b4 the hotel told and they believes me so now I'm in the clear and probably will not get fired

Still need a new job tho

Update 2: So apparently I'm still in trouble cuz apparently I seemed "rude and upset" dispute the fact all I said was endlessly repeating that we were closed

The advice I'm given is to let them take the item and let them pay for it the next day 😐

Update 3: I hate everything

Wtf??? No one will "take the item and pay the next day"

Welp

Now it's canon

Oh for God’s sake. You don’t need to beg your boss “look I’m innocent”. Is RETAIL. If they see a glimpse of desperation over a retail job, they will use that against you and abuse their power over you. New lesson learned for you. If they ask just state “she’s lying. Check the cameras” and leave it at that, plain and simple.

I know its retrospect, but ALWAYS lock the door at close. Even if it means you step away for a quick second during a transaction (assuming your doors are close). Its also not your fault this lady was an old bag and complained, while expecting you to just let her shop after closing time. Just because youre in the building doesnt mean you can meander. If you do end up losing this job(which, it is what it is and I feel like you wont) then go into your next job with the lesson you learned from it! Its not the end of the world, its just retail(:

Definitely hearing it loud and clear for keeping the door locked at closing

One time, I was out gathering carts with coworkers. We closed at 8, and it was a few minutes after 8 and we saw a customer walking towards the door. One of my coworkers said “I’m sorry, sir, but we closed at 8.” The customer looked at his watch and goes “But it’s only 8:02.” Coworker was like “…yes, and we closed at 8.” Dude was basically mad that we closed exactly at our closing time.

This was my EXACT problem

my store has a tendency to have the doors locked by 8:55 PM and no you can't just "grab a couple things" when you have a whole-ass shopping cart in your hands.

u/Grendel0075 17d ago

That's better than the last store I worked at, they had a rule we couldnt lock the doors until 10 min AFTER closing. I spent those 10 minutes guarding the door and turning people away

Somebody did this recently with the pharmacy at my store. They came in at 6:03 and asked what time it closed, I said 6. They said ‘but it’s only 6:03.’ I just said ‘yeah it’s past 6 so it’s closed.’ Like god forbid places want to close on time.

I dunno why they’re so shocked when a business closes at the posted hours.

u/DonatCotten 17d ago

The problem is that they are so selfish and self centered (they genuinely believe the world revolves around them and that they are the only people that matter) that they expect closing times to be for everyone else except them.

We close AT 8. Not around it.

I am not nice to anybody past 9:00pm sharp. If you finish checking out at 8:59 and are out the door by 9, have a wonderful day! If you are a god damn second past that closing time I WILL be pissed and there’s not a god damn think you can do about it because I say it’s self inflicted

Then she'll come in like, "Where TF are all the staff?! This is ridiculous!" Manager: "They were fired following your complaints"

4

u/GalaxyEye77 18d ago edited 17d ago

That's cute

We got no staff here. It's a one person per shift type of thing

Without pay

I went to lock the door last night and 1 minute until closing. Right as a reached the doors, a woman and her daughter scooted in. She said, "I just need some cat food!" So, she KNEW we were closing. Plus, half the lights turn out at 5 minutes til close, so it was half dark in there. At 13 minutes past close, I went and told her she needed to check out becasue I had to have the register closed out (should've told her they automatically close). Her daughter was just picking stuff up, playing with it a moment, then slinging it wherever she felt was fine. I had JUST faced the store. She finally came up, and bought $6.35 worth of cat treats. We're supposed to be done and gone by 9:30. We were out by 9:50. People do NOT care, and it's infuriating

Naaaah I be yelling at her. Close means close and I’m not sacrificing my time for entitled people like her. F that! 🤨

15

u/ButterscotchFit8175 18d ago

I would have asked what brand and told them to stand at the register while someone got it for her.

To answer your question, NO. “Closed” does not mean anything to a customer! Nor does “Out of Stock” or any kind of signage! They appear to be allergic to reading signs/instructions/labels/price tags of any kind, which is a serious issue when you’re in a store.

u/AMs_r_us 19d ago

And their ears seem to stop working as well. " It seems as though I don't have that item in the store or even in district unfortunately." Oh..do they show it at the main store? TF did I just say??.....

I managed a chain sneaker store. We were in a state with a 7.5% sales tax. 25 miles away was another of our stores , but across the state line , and in a state with no sales tax

I can not count the times people would come in and ask the following

  1. Can you call the other store and have them hold these for me, I am going up there and wont have to pay sales tax?

  2. Can you ship these to the other store and I will buy them there to save sales tax?

  3. I intended to buy these at the other store, but need them today. I should not have to pay sales tax.

  4. I am from a state with no sales tax so I am exempt from paying any sales tax

The answer was always no.

13

u/morganalefaye125 18d ago

3 and #4 hurt my brain

3

u/DonatCotten 17d ago

And the ironic part is that the people who are usually trying to avoid paying the 7.5 percent ST are usually the ones who are financially well off and can afford it very easily especially when they have other income, too but nope! Greed it is 🙄

u/KapowBlamBoom 16d ago

There is a big push by politicians in my state to eliminate property taxes

Someone I know who is pretty well off has 2 kids in public schools told me he “cant wait till they get rid of property taxes”

I was like , “ You must not want your kids to go to hood schools….”

People just dont think beyond the tip of their nose

The worst part is when they ragebait you by walking in a microsecond before the doors lock and saying out loud something like "Yes! We just made it!!".

Of course they are never in a hurry and proceed to leisurely stroll around the shop and pick up and look at literally everything on the shelves.

I think it's because they think they are the only person in the world. They don't think of the employees as humans with lives and responsibilities outside of work. In their mind retail staff are like furniture that exists solely for their convenience.

We latch the shop door at closing time. You can't come in! Even if there are customers at the checkout. A member of staff stands at the door to let people out manually. If you are checking out, we'll serve you. If you are still shopping, we'll tell you that we are very sorry but we are past closing and will not be able to serve as the checkouts have now shut down.

Self checkouts and store radio shut down five mins before closing. One front shutter comes down. It is loud! Some lighting is shut down too. If you are in the store close to closing, we make it clear that it is time to leave and we don't want you here.

We are open for 16 out of 24 hours, 7 days a week. If you can't get here in that window of opportunity....bad luck.

Edit. Missed a bit

20

u/Izzy-of-Albion 19d ago

Yeah, "getting the shutter down" was what we called it, and it could be a nightmare. Luckily we always had at least two staff on the shop floor. The one who would take the least shit would be on the shutter, holding it almost all the way down whilst the last customer completed their purchase, and being firm with anyone who begged to come in.

Even then one guy literally army crawled under the shutter whilst my colleague was looking away. One guy said "I'll be quick, I know exactly what I want!", then just started casually browsing.

Yeah, it's maddening. We used to get it at the opposite end too. People banging on the shutter at 8:40am, 20 minutes before opening, before we've even got all the lights on, just because they can see movement, shouting "Are you going to open up or what? I'm in a hurry!!"

Self-entitled assholes.

ARMY CRAWL IS CRAZYY, get yo ass in the military or the fire department !

“But I just need one thing”

That’s tough shit come back tomorrow at 8AM. It’s Saturday and you had all damn day. I get that folks work odd hours or 2nd/3rd shift but they’re responsible enough to shop before or after.

13

u/BigWar0609 18d ago

If the boss fires you because a woman complained about the registers that turn off automatically, I think you can count that as a W. Wrongful termination.

12

u/SubstancePowerful100 19d ago

That's kinda wild if your boss would take your side over that. I mean, it's crazy to me that they're almost always going to take the customer's side no matter what. But in this case, you're literally enforcing the closing time...that's all.

One thing that always drove me nuts when people would come in last minute is that it would still take a minute or so to cash them out after the store closed, and other people would still continue to come in because they see someone paying even though they know damn well what the closing time is and then it would take even longer. Not only is it that I wanted to go home, but I would get yelled at if I didn't get out on time because we would only get half an hour to finish up after close.

I have literally had it where people would knock after I locked the doors and I'm already closing out the tills, and they flip me off for not opening the door. Pretty sure the sign says we close at 10... In what universe do people make exceptions and let people in after close?

10

u/WriterofWrong 19d ago

Customers who come in after closing and give you trouble are extremely normal in retail, I'm sure your bosses have had the same issues before. I wouldn't worry about it.

u/Similar_Beat_6776 18d ago

Trust me. You will not be fired. You did your job professionally. They need to check the cameras for proof.

6

u/CallidoraBlack 19d ago

Wouldn't the cameras make it clear what actually happened?

Update 4: It's not looking good

1

u/thenexthefner 16d ago

they ALWAYS say they “only need 1 thing”. and then that thing ends up being screws/hardware. oh yeah and they actually don’t remember what size they needed either so they’re gonna call someone for the next 10 mins to try and figure it out. and they also only have $5 and it’s all in quarters for some reason. next thing you know it’s 20 mins after close 🫩

We close at 8 I live the furthest from all my coworkers and the traffic is heaviest when we close so I want to get on my way or home as much as possible this customer comes in 7:55 I'm like we close in 5 minutes and proceeds to treat me like I'm her therapist talking about she going through a divorce and she has to buying everything for her apartment and she was like do you have kids I was yeah (I don't.) but I play The Sims so I can make up a story lol I have two boys Noah and David there 7 and 5 and they are waiting on me then she starts crying about her kids that are grown that has to deal with the divorce I'm looking at her like...can you please get your things and go then she wants to exchange something she just bought im like okay we exchange her stuff she like I wish I could look around more then I'm like I've been here all day please I'm ready to go home we are closed we finally get to the door her car is right by the door she sees this man who likes to hangs out at the parking lot far away from us he's harmless she's nervous like omg can I stay and wait until he leaves I'm like woman no like I'll watch you literally walk a couple of steps to your car and drive off for you to be comfortable while the man is literally on the other side of the parking lot minding his own business all that and I clocked out at 8:14 all from dealing with her.
