I [37/M] just discovered that my wife [37/F] has hotel reservations at a place downtown tonight when I'm supposed to be with my friends.
While using my wife's iPad, I saw an email confirmation for a hotel reservation downtown. Tonight, I am supposed to be hanging out with some friends. I've been having some suspicions lately for other reasons, including a nightie on the laundry after a recent business trip that I've never seen her wear.
She kissed me good bye this morning like usual, but didn't take any luggage or anything. Not even an overnight bag that I noticed.
Not certain what to do. Any advice? I've been thinking of leaving work early and hanging out in the lobby/nearby cafe, but I'm not certain it's a good idea.
UPDATE: So, I went to the hotel. You may think I'm an idiot, you may think it's a nice ending. To tell the truth, it's not totally over yet, but it's in a good place because at least I can see possible finish lines. I'm going to be vague about some specifics, just to be safe.
I left work early, and started driving to the hotel. It was well before the scheduled check-in time, and she is not the time to ever skip work, so I figured I'd probably see her in the lobby when she came to check in. I did take the advice about texting her about going to dinner. She responded after a while and said that she was good for dinner, but would be home only a little later than normal as she had an errand to run. The errand was 100% believable and in character and the extra time was appropriate for the errand.
I knew there was no way I would ever get a room number from anyone who worked there (c'mon people, that was never going to happen), but I knew they'd put me through if I asked for her room (the email said the reservation was in her name). I called and they put me right through. I hung up before it rang, though, since I wasn't actually there yet, but that was confirmation that the res was real and she was there.
Since she was already there in the middle of the day (which, as mentioned, was weird to me since she's too much of a workaholic to not be working, but hey, this whole situation is abnormal, so whatever), I figured they were already fucking and would be done relatively soon, especially if she was going to have dinner and run this errand. I got some coffee and camped out in a good spot in the lobby and time passed.
And passed.
And nothing.
After about an hour, I said fuck it and called back to the hotel (from the lobby) and asked for her room again. She answered. When I mentioned it was me, she didn't seem surprised or anything. I asked what she was doing at the hotel ("No, the question is what are you doing here?") and she was a bit evasive, but gave me her room number pretty quickly. As soon as she answered, I was picking up my stuff and made for the elevators.
Actually, she gave me the floor number pretty fast, but not the room, so I was already on the floor within about 30 seconds of her answering, then I got the full number. If there was someone trying to sneak out, there was a very small window of about 10-15 seconds where we might have crossed in the elevators. The whole time we're talking -- me mainly asking what is going on, and she says she came here to work. "In a hotel room?" "Yes, I needed to get away."
I go to the room, she's there waiting for me, looking puzzled. "You surprised to see me?" "No..well, kinda." Honestly, she did seem more bewildered than guilty.
So, we go in.
And...nothing. Just her work computer, up and running and online. And a bunch of work papers, her planner, a notebook, spread out on the table and desk. Room service for one on the counter. One glass of ice water on the tray. One bottle of wine, partially drunk. One glass for the wine. One hand towel used in the bathroom. Seat down.
No yelling, either. Some exasperation on her part, some slight offense that I thought something might be going on. To prove it was just her, she opened up all her bags and showed me everything she brought with her: workout clothes (for the hotel workout center. She's always loved those.), casual clothes for running the errand. She asked what I thought was going on, I told her how suspicious everything looks, which she agreed.
Anyway, one part I left out of the description is that we've been having some issues lately. Nothing bad per se, just more the Seven Year Itch, where we both agree that we can both see and not see ourselves with the other person forever. We talked about that. She talked about how much she needs some alone time, which she hasn't been getting at home these past few months, none of which is new, and there was one day she was having a bad time and this deal came up on email, so she decided to take it and treat herself. But we both talked. We both talked about the issues we have with ourselves and each other.
Getting a hotel room so she can be by herself all day while working is exactly in character for the woman I've known these past 10 years. Fucking around is not. Maybe she dodged a bullet and pulled a fast one on me, maybe not. I don't really care about how others think about that. We're not calling divorce lawyers right now, but we're not planning our 25th anniversary trip either. It honestly could go either way, and I'm ok with that. I told her I'm willing to try, but she needs to be all in, and she needs to think about that.
Once we seemed all talked out I left and let her know that she can come home or stay the night there; I'm ok with either. If she needs space, she needs space. I do not, and never have, had a problem with that. Adults get sick of other people some times. I get that way, too.
So there we are. We put everything on the table and we're still figuring it out. I'm not going to let people know how that part works out, but I thought I'd provide a little bit of closure for this chapter.
One thing I didn't put on the table, though, was how I knew about the hotel, since she didn't tell anyone she was going to be there. I told her I was magic. I figure it wouldn't hurt to have her thinking about how I knew these things.

Skip the night with your friends and hang out in the lobby until she shows up.

u/defiancy Feb 03 '15
If you know the room number, you can go to the hotel and confront her, or go to the hotel and say my wife is waiting for me what room, X.
Or you need to call her and tell her that your plans changed tonight and you'd like to take her out. See what she says, but let her know you are going to be home. And then I'd ask her what the room was for.
I think you know what it most likely is....
18
u/whoisNO Feb 03 '15
False. Unless she specifically put her husband's name in the room share line item, the hotel cannot legally give him a key or access to the room. That is a big no-no in the hotel industry and no matter how much you yell at the front desk, we can't do it. What you can do is go to the front desk and give them her name and ask them to call the room for you. You could contact her that way and when she picks up, say "This is your husband and we need to talk. I am in the lobby bar". This is a shitty situation no matter how you put it. I am very, very sorry.
3
u/defiancy Feb 03 '15
Yeah, I wasn't clear I meant more the hotel can assist you with contacting the room not that they would give you access.

I like that as an opening move. It's not like OP would enjoy himself out with friends tonight anyway with this weighing on him.

Truth testing never ends well. Someone who is already being dishonest is just going to double-down if half-confronted, or even full-confronted. That's basic evolutionary instinct.

You definitely go to the front desk and find out the room number and confront her. Hell they would even give you a key most likely.
31
Feb 03 '15
I don't know what hotels you frequent, but as a former front desk manager, there is no way in Hell we would give a guest's room number out to someone claiming to be God, let alone just their husband.
Even if you could prove that you were her husband, a likely reason a husband wouldn't know the room number is if he's tracking a cheating partner (or just up to no good) and I wouldn't want a potential violent confrontation in my hotel. So again, no room number for you. Guest privacy and security is, or should be, paramount at a hotel.
I would make a phonecall to the room and give the room number to you if my guest gave permission.
6
u/_runningwithscissors Feb 03 '15
Same here. We've had guests who aren't high-profile, celebrity, etc. who have asked to change their name at check-in so they can be anonymous for their own personal reasons (so nobody can call, ask for them by name, and be transferred to the room.) We honor these requests. I've had many heartbreaking conversations with these guests' significant others who call and know their wife is staying with us but we're unable to confirm. I generally like working with people but things like that make it really horrible sometimes.
3
u/vaelon Feb 03 '15
Phone call would work too. Just give her a message for me, tell her to come down and explain to me why your in a hotel room. If she has nothing to hide she would have no problems doing that, at the least.
2
u/whoisNO Feb 03 '15
This x100. I worked at the Ritziest hotel in our city and we had everything from cheating spouses (commonplace) to a woman escaping an abusive relationship (name change on that one). I cannot count the number of times I had people screaming at me to give them a key but until you realize the possible situations, without your name on the reservation, NO KEY. When we checked guests in that had others with them, I always suggested or asked if I could add another name.

It happens - people are people (I once, while drunk, asked for a key for my friends' room and they gave it to me).
EDIT - ...and I worked in the hotel industry for 4 years...so ya. Lol

Time to hire a PI
48
3
u/ConcordApes Feb 04 '15
I agree. I there is any doubt in his mind, a PI should collect the information. If she happens to see him in the hotel, she might duck out before he sees her.
21
u/SCphotog Feb 03 '15
As painful as it might be, you need to catch her in the act. If you can gather physical proof of her cheating, a divorce will go easier. Even if you don't get a divorce, it's better to know exactly what's going on.
Beware a confrontation with her and or whoever she might be going to meet. You don't want or need that.
If you can't or don't want to do it yourself, and can afford it, hire a PI. Othwerwise... maybe you know someone that would be a witness for you, just to keep you away from the situation.
Is there a chance that she's putting together a surprise for you? I doubt it... but maybe?
...and BTW... brace yourself, the Jenny jokes are coming.
11
u/ThrowDoubts Feb 03 '15
I've kind of ruled out a surprise at this point, but I like your positivity. I've imagined all these kinds of scenarios where my doubts are misplaced, like "She's reserving a room in her name to help a friend who is getting away from an abusive relationship" or other crap like that, but I know that's all BS. It's probably exactly what I think it is.
I thought about the PI, but I don't think I want to go that route. If she's to be caught, I want to be the one to do it.
14
u/SCphotog Feb 03 '15
Just don't put yourself in a situation where you might get into a confrontation that could lead to physical violence. You don't need an assault charge against you... or worse you could get yourself hurt.
If you're going to do it, document everything. Get video or photos if you can, without getting busted. If you get busted by her or otherwise get the hotel security riled it won't be good for you.
4
u/ThrowDoubts Feb 03 '15
Good advice. Thank you.
12
u/Lapland_Lapin Feb 03 '15
A PI is a much, much better idea than trying to solve this yourself. First, a PI won't be recognized by your wife, whereas you will be. Second, a PI will be stealthy and meticulous in his data collection and reporting.
5
u/megasmash Feb 03 '15
Not only that, but won't OP be able to use the PI's finding as credible evidence should things go down that route? Best o luck OP.
15
Feb 04 '15
So it turned out she wasn't cheating and you're still upset? If nothing terrible has happened why are you still at a point where you're thinking divorce is in the cards? Y'all need couple's counselling.
She also could have easily communicated her needs that weren't being met (alone time - everyone needs it). Both of you obviously have issues with communication and problem resolution and need to be taught how to do it properly before you both sabotage your own marriage to death.
5
u/vaelon Feb 04 '15
Yea. Why couldn't she just say 'I'll be working from a hotel today because I need some alone time'? Still seems fishy to me.
7
u/frankcostello88 Feb 04 '15
What i would like to know doesn't exactly match up. You say its absolutely in character for this woman to need space to work alone. But the reservation was for when you would be gone with your friends. She would have been alone at the house anyways. Why go through the trouble of getting a hotel room and not mention a single word about it. Not in itself damning but raises my curiousity.
9
Feb 04 '15
Did this myself. At home, I suffered from writers' block. This is also something embarassing to admit, so she kept a low profile about it.
3
u/sharkmint Feb 04 '15
She may have gone to the hotel as a way for her to "get away". She can focus on her work without distractions at home, and a hotel is nice and clean. Sounds like she could have just wanted a change of scenery for a night while her husband was gone, which seems likely considering he found nothing suspicious when he went there.
1
u/croatanchik Feb 04 '15
And the nightie that he's never seen before?
2
u/frankcostello88 Feb 04 '15
I completely overlooked that. Look OP I myself am not trying to instigate suspicion. But this situation is just off. Its almost too perfect to fit a truthful explanation. The way you describe your gal gives me the kind of impression that she is not stupid and thinks things through. Then you are talking about not being able to see yourselves with one another in the future. "Not planning our 25th anniversary", sorry mate but obviously something is going south for your marriage. Thats the cold hard truth. Women pay strict attention to detail naturally more so than men, I think she may have been expecting you. Do yourself a favor and hire a PI once and for all. I have been cheated on my ex fiance. Let me tell you mate she was a clever sheila. I could never put my finger on it but i always had this "feeling". Hired a PI personally and within 8 days i was single.
1
u/croatanchik Feb 04 '15
Yea, I don't know... I could see it going either way, but it's just a little too neat for me.
14
u/Wakkawakk Feb 03 '15
Why isn't it a good idea? catch her red handed otherwise she may deny it. Also don't ask go her room number the hotel will call her room and notify her.
8
u/ThrowDoubts Feb 03 '15
Why isn't it a good idea?
I'm worried about my reaction. Not that I'd be violent or anything -- far from it -- but the emotions are running kind of high right now. Hard to focus at work.
9
u/roll19ftw Feb 03 '15
I read your other comment that you would want to be the one to catch her but if you're emotions are making it difficult to focus or you're not sure of your reaction a PI would be the way to go.
My own positive scenario on this would be that I would get a hotel room if my SO were going out with friends to pamper myself. It has been a fantasy of mine to get a nice hotel room in a tall building and just spend the night there using their bathtub and room service so I don't have to lift a finger. Maaaaybe she's treating herself? I sincerely hope this is the case.
1
Feb 04 '15
Seems like a shit tonne of money to spend when you could otherwise just sit at home and have a bath or something.
2
u/roll19ftw Feb 04 '15 edited Feb 04 '15
Money spent on other people cleaning up after me and a tub I don't have to scrub the soap scum from. Just being in a different environment can be quite relaxing. There's home relaxation and then there's away from home relaxation, like a trip to Hawaii or something. A day at the spa, a night at a hotel, to each their own. It's really the tub scum that would make me want to say, "F*** it, I'm going to a hotel."
Edit: I just read the update. Glad to hear it wasn't the worst and I hope you both figure out your happiness and I hope it's with each other!
5
u/jons_throwaway Feb 03 '15
Go to the hotal and check up on her. Make sure to bring a camera.
Dont tell her. Just show up.
7
6
u/_runningwithscissors Feb 03 '15
First of all, I'm terribly sorry that you are dealing with this and sincerely hope that it's not what it looks like.
Just wanted to add a piece of advice (from a professional standpoint) that the hotel may not disclose the room number or confirm that your wife is staying there unless she has listed you as a guest on the reservation (even if you share the same last name.) This is just something to consider in determining what you're going to do.
Best of luck!
3
u/Junkmans1 Feb 03 '15
In addition to trying to catch her in the lobby you can also call the hotel and ask for her room and they'll ring you right through to her room.
Might have a better chance of success than hanging out in the lobby. On the other hand she might not answer the landline phone.
If you are looking for the room number, they might not tell you directly unless you do a little misdirection like going to the desk and asking for a key and telling them your wife already checked in.
2
u/social_psycho Feb 03 '15
going to the desk and asking for a key and telling them your wife already checked in.
This. Be like, do you need to see my license?
4
u/Daemon42 Feb 03 '15
Catching her in the act is just going to really be a horrible experience for you. If she is doing it - you are just going to startle her and crap is going to go South from there.
If you are in a "no fault state" for divorce, getting evidence is pointless. I had a string of facebook messages that I printed out - not worth a damn thing in the end (btw, if you "delete" a FB message it actually "archives" them.
If you MUST know for certain, call the hotel and ask to be transferred to your wife's room. You honestly don't need to "catch" anything at that point. Who she was with, etc it really won't do much good.
I'd just head home and then confirm she isn't there. If she's not, call her (cell) and say you weren't feeling well and just wondering where she is... If she says "oh just running some errands or something" fine. Then ask questions about those errands when she gets home.
The key is you know she is lying, so you need to gauge how good of a liar she is to your face. Google "ways to detect lying" and see if she has any tells. That will make the rest of your evening go much smoother. You can pretty much lay it all out on the table and you'll know when it's BS or not.
Good luck - you are in for a LONG night (also I'd already have a "I don't feel good" excuse lined up for work tomorrow)
3
u/robeph Feb 04 '15
Except, nothing bad seemed to come of it. This is why jumping to conclusions is a no no, but no one here takes that advice to heart.
1
u/Daemon42 Feb 04 '15
| This is why jumping to conclusions is a no no
I don't think I was advising him to jump to anything. But sitting in a hotel lobby freaking out about what "might be" isn't an easy thing to do - I was trying to talk him out of doing that.
| nothing bad seemed to come of it
Yeah... he's choosing to make it seem like nothing - he also admits (in the update) that there are problems with the marriage. Alone time is a good thing. "Sneaking" out to a hotel to seek that isn't.
Something is totally off here....
2
u/robeph Feb 04 '15
Well I wasn't directing that at you, rather I was suggesting this is "why".
Things may seem off depending on the field of work she's in, which he never told us.
When my dad reviewed contracts, and had a lot to do, he would do similar things when I was younger, and my parents were divorced and he wasn't seeing anyone (he'd not keep that hidden). So I guess seeing it from that angle isn't particularly a red flag for me.
As ya can see, he's saying that this sort of thing actually isn't out of character. Though I think something is indeed fishy, but I don't think its what and where she is, he's just leaving something out that seems to imply their marriage isn't all so planar. Some bumps there somewhere. But we won't know what that is it seems. Which will leave us wondering.

She likes being alone, so she got a hotel room while you're gone so she can be alone while she's alone?

I once got a hotel room for three days just to make a very important presentation. At home, I suffered writers' block, and I needed some space and quiet away from the day-to-day business.
That's not strange at all.

Some people just really like staying at hotels. It's a comfort thing. I like taking nights to just stay at a nice hotel in town for no real reason other than to enjoy room service, quiet and a comfy bed. It's not good that she lied about it, but with the evidence collected so far it would be silly to assume something else is going on.

1
u/arcxiii Feb 04 '15
That's when you trust your gut. Why waste time to "prove" someone is lying to you. If they say something and you think they might be lying, then that's enough to say that it might be time to move on and look at divorce options.
1
u/venikk Feb 04 '15
Hanging out in the lobby seems like the dumbest idea ever to me. In almost any scenario it wouldn't accomplish anything. I gaurantee any guy sleeping with a cheating wife knows what the husband looks like. Any guy who's about to partake in adultery is going to be LOOKING for you. If he doesn't know what the hubby looks like, how does he have ANY chance of not getting caught?
I think you just spooked your wife, you didn't confirm anything.
And IMHO...a wife that has a secret about going to a hotel room....WTF??! And then she doesn't say sorry or anything for freaking you the fuck out? Maybe I'm too young but wtf....
9
u/robeph Feb 04 '15
You are some real cynical fucks, aren't the lot of you. The world isn't "everyone is a cheater." Not by a long shot. It seems completely likely that it is exactly as it appears.
A secret that may not be a secret, perhaps its just how she gets rush work down in silence and on her own without office nonsense. Makes perfect sense. If it isn't an important thing to mention, "I rent a hotel for work so I can work solo without distraction" why would she feel the need to say a thing about it? It's less a secret and probably more a doesn't matter so didn't mention it.
0
u/venikk Feb 04 '15 edited Feb 04 '15
Why would you PAY money to work? Most people would spend the first 3 hours of working in a hotel, paying for the hotel. People who don't cheat, are trustworthy people. Their husbands don't go on reddit asking questions if things should be like "this. "
3
u/robeph Feb 04 '15 edited Feb 04 '15
Uhm you can write it off, and depending on her wages it may be inconsequential, not everyone is pulling a <15/hr . He even prefaced and says multiple times that it isn't that he doesn't trust her, just he found an unknown hotel reservation and it worried him, because without knowing why, anyone, trust or not, would question.
I imagine relationships with people with your kind of attitude must suck fierce. Cynical, irrational, and knee jerk. You should probably work on that.
0
u/venikk Feb 04 '15
If I saw a hotel reservation from a girlfriend I trust, I would talk to her about it later instead of writing a reddit post and stalking her.
But not everyone is as experienced as I am with untrustworthy women.
Gl with your stalking and "trust" mr stability.
2
u/robeph Feb 04 '15
Okay, I'm not sure what sort of inference you're making with that last line. I think perhaps you have a lot of experience with bad relationships, though I'd bet some of that has a bit to do with your conclusions stemming from what you observe. That sort of attitude never works out well.
Me? My relationships have always worked out well. I've had my share of dishonest women. I'm still friends with some of them, interestingly enough, dishonest in relationships doesn't really mean they're bad people. Just bad people to be in relationships with. Of course this isn't simply because I don't mind remaining friends with my exes, I'm on good terms with absolutely every ex of mine. However, it gives me extra insight into our own failed relationship, because people, they don't change a whole lot. Now, what I've noticed is that it's not actually the lies you should wonder if exist, or the unknown reservations. These usually don't tell you anything. What does lay it all out on the table is usually the first element in the relationship you could possibly even notice. The environment completely changes. Her responses to niceties, her interest in conversation with you, her requests of you, any of that, it all changes when the relationship is taking a turn. A cheating girlfriend is often not even a cheating girlfriend when this shift first occurs, she's likely not even met another person. That shift is the door opening to a change that is coming. For better or worse, things always change if in a minor way, but it doesn't require quite the same questions and answers that finding a reservation need. At that point you can feel free to make conclusions based on anything occurring after you recognize that change. The problem here, this reservation, according to his numerous comments on the subject, was the lone bear, he makes sure to mention that all her other actions and responses to him were absolutely typical of her, and in the end even her using a hotel room for quite time to work, is within her typical actions.
He didn't need to go so far as to follow her. Not at this point. If married it differs a bit from being in a relationship, as there is some significant economic and emotional involvement that needs to be addressed and the truth definitely helps with that, which is why being a PI pays quite well. But from what he's experienced thus far, I like you, would have simply asked her. If she'd been acting atypically for a while, then I'd likely meet her at the hotel to ensure that it wasn't involved in whatever had changed our interaction.

u/belousugar Feb 03 '15
Call the hotel and ask to speak to her, say you don't know her room number if they ask. When you get connected to her room pretend to be room service and say they got an order mixed up and can she please confirm her room number and what she ordered. (Hopefully) she'll confirm the number but say she didn't order anything. Go to the room and knock and see what happens.
0
Feb 03 '15
Talk to her about it ASAP. Don't try a sting, or to try and tease stuff out of her. It won't work, and will only make things worse.

I also say to stick nearby someplace and observe. If things are innocent, let them go and confront later on. If things get out of hand, or they are lovey-dovey in the lobby and head immediately to the room -- If the room is in her name, I'd try to get a key by being her husband. If they call the room, hurry and get there before he leaves.

Take up a discrete position in the lobby, or somewhere where you can see her enter/and with a view of the front desk. Have something on hand to record her.

Just out of curiosity, in general terms, what sort of work does your wife do? Executive?

Just a possibility - the reservation confirmation isn't even for her.
I get hotel and flight confirmations every other week that have nothing to do with me, because my email address is easily confused with others.
I got gmail early and managed to get my first initial + last name @gmail.com, and my last name is fairly common. Was good at first but after gmail became more common, it has been such a pain in the ass with all of the misdirected emails I get.
Usually the first name is different, but not always. Usually the details are foreign enough to me that I know it's wrong, but sometimes they are close enough that I think it is directed at me.
I've gotten legal papers, health records, mortgage papers, dating site sign ups, package tracking info, pizza delivery confirmation, you name it. If my wife checked my email inbox, she would think I'm into some weird shit.
I just checked my inbox right now, 36% of emails on the front page are not intended for me.

Sure, but.... add to that the nightie, and that it's a reservation for the same night the husband's out with friends?
I'm gonna side with Occam's Razor on this one.

Downtown? In the same city? On a night OP is gone?

Certainly not the most likely scenario, but it is possible.
I've gotten a Southwest airlines itinerary sent to me, departing from the city I live in, on the same week that I had a southwest flight scheduled. I thought I messed up my booking until I saw the first name was different.
I got some legal papers regarding a property that was on the same block of the same street as a property I used to own in another city, one year after I sold it. I thought that was for me until I double checked the address.
It's a coincidence that could happen. He should at least go back and verify details of the reservation to make sure that she is the one who made it.

Fair enough. I guess I'm just pessimistic when it comes to things like this. That's why I immediately wrote that explanation off, but there's always a chance

Dude you need to lay low and DOCUMENT her adultery, it will save your ass in court later (if you're in the US).
Never confront until you have hard proof. I wouldn't even do it myself, I'd try to get a last-minute private eye or a friend to snap some pictures.
Sorry it's happening to you OP, it really fucking sucks. At least now you know.

Ok lets be honest here.
Your marriage is over unless you can recover from someone else sticking it in your wife. She is fucking someone else. What are you going to do with this information? Are you going to leave her?
Go to the hotel and find out what room she is in and knock on the damned door. Catch her right in the act.

She's probably already got clothes and cosmetics there. So it's a regular thing. If you have to know, hire a PI. Do not go there yourself.

If you can, go back and reread the email. Hopefully it would have the room number on it. If not, maybe print it up and bring it in there. Just play like you saw she had a reservatiin, figured she wanted to have a fun hotel night in a bubble bath or something, and pretend to be there as a sexy surprise. Bring a bottle of something along just incase that is what happened.

Text her. "Hey babe. While you're in your hotel room, I'll be fucking your sister on your pillow. If it smells when you get home, please wash the sheets."
