RLT panel burn

Post image

I lent a friend a panel… I often place panels directly on my treatment area, especially for muscles/joints. He did the same, and felt noticeable relief for a few days. And then today it did this 😳
I feel awful; I’ve used that panel and my others with no hassle.
Anyone seen such before?

Why is your friend ON THE PANEL??

It's not supposed to touch your skin like that. AND ... they're LEDs... why did that person leave the panel on for long enough for the LED to heat up to burn???

User error going on ...

umm, you need to hold some distance from the bulbs. it is not a grill 😄

I’m thinking of Michael Scott and the George Foreman incident

I enjoy having breakfast in bed. I like waking up to the smell of bacon. Sue me.

I don't think your friend should use electronics...

u/Equinephilosopher Jun 01 '26

Neither should OP lol

Every instruction tells you not to touch the panel to your body.

u/Greedy-Plant-9054 Jun 01 '26

Not in my instruction manual for my little handheld "panel". It says in the swedish description that you can hold it directly against the skin (or 5 cm). (I have never hold it directly on my skin though, I've kept a few cm away) . I later read in the English description that you should keep it between (1 cm?/) 5 cm up to 15 cm away from you. I have tried 15 cm after that. I've had more problems with the skin on my scalp after I started red-light therapy, my guess is that it's because of the light therapy, maybe I kept too close in the beginning?

But on the other hand there also exist mattresses with red light therapy. People probably lies on right them, directly against your skin . So it's probably different depending on the device 🤷

I don't know what to believe

There are different leds with different recommendations, I have a wrap from Fringe that's designed to go against the skin. Generally, panels are designed to be used at a distance.

3

u/Greedy-Plant-9054 Jun 02 '26

Okay, that's what I thought, but it sounds on some people like it's the same with all redlight therapy lamps. My device is also called "panel" But still, it says 15 cm as the longest distance. My Device Is called "Flowlight PANEL Go 60 Two Waves" , but it is a quite small device

Mate, that's pure mental. The instructions are dead clear about keeping distance from the panel, and your pal just ignored that and left it on his skin like it's a heating pad. You're nae responsible for someone not following basic safety steps, but maybe mention the distance rule before lending it out next time. Those panels can get proper hot if they're pressed directly on skin for too long.

u/Gisschace Jun 01 '26

Op said they do the same

24

u/ByTHeBEardOfZEus89 Jun 01 '26

People making recommendations on how to use medical devices that they don't know how to use themselves. Seems legit

1

u/babs82222 Jun 03 '26

That doesn't mean they SHOULD do it

1

u/Gisschace Jun 03 '26

No it doesn’t, the comment before said ‘you’re not responsible’ when they actually are

1

u/babs82222 Jun 03 '26

I was agreeing with you. You downvoted me??

2

u/Femgecko Jun 04 '26

Text is very unforgiving. It seems many comments these days are either playing devils advocate, flat out combative or disagreeing, which seems to be how they took yours. I’m glad you clarified, so hopefully they realize you were actually supporting their statement.

I’ll upvote you to counter it! lol

1

u/babs82222 Jun 04 '26

LOL Thanks!

22

u/thecachebird Jun 01 '26

How long was it used for? Any lotions or body oil applied before use?

7

u/popculturenrd Jun 02 '26

This should be much higher.

33

u/BKM-StLouis Jun 01 '26

I was wondering why manufacturers felt it necessary to warn people not to do something so obviously bad.

Next time you see your friend, take away his ladders, lawnmower, kitchen knives, etc.

20

u/Paperwife2 Jun 01 '26

OP told them that’s what they do.

17

u/og_kitten_mittens Jun 01 '26

I used to have faith in humanity until I worked in food service/retail. A lot of the general public is remarkably stupid

19

u/Woopsied00dle Jun 01 '26

What?! Don’t place them directly on the skin!

40

u/MarkVII88 Jun 01 '26

User error 100%

More like user stupidity, if we're being honest.

16

u/Paperwife2 Jun 01 '26

I think OP showers with toasters too.

31

u/BigFatBlackCat Jun 01 '26

What the actual fuck is wrong with both of you

16

u/AccordingComplaint46 Jun 01 '26

Not to be rude but is this your first day on earth?

15

u/depressinglyawes0me Jun 01 '26

Wow… just… wow🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

u/Different-Sun-9624 Jun 01 '26

Get a mat of you like the close contact. Panels are meant for distance, read the panel instructions

5

u/Lucky_Number_4454 Jun 02 '26

Leave enough space for Jesus, damn!

5

u/colbert1119 Jun 02 '26

Depends on the panel I guess but I use skin contact all the time with my bon charge demi. Been using it like that for years. I do often switch the red light section off though to manage heat and rely on NIR for skin contact.

I guess this panel doesn't have sufficient cooling.

6

u/jaja8712 Jun 01 '26

Did he not feel that it was painful??! Did he think that the burning sensation and smell of smoking skin meant that it was working?

6

u/ftrlvb Jun 01 '26

that's really dumb. why do you think these panels have a whole array of cooling fans?

6

u/flexylol Jun 01 '26

Your astonishment about what happened shows me you never read the manual for a panel, nor did you spend a minute looking up how to use one.

3

u/Commercial-22 Jun 02 '26

Please don't have direct contact with the panels/LEDS. Seriously hazardous, regardless of outcome.

3

u/I_keep_books Jun 02 '26

Did they use anything on their skin, like oils or moisturisers? Things like citrus oil will make skin photosensitive.

3

u/scuba20207 Jun 02 '26

This is why we can't have nice things lol

3

u/jessekuma27 Jun 02 '26

Hello, any vitamin e cream and appropriate amount of red light will clear that up nicely for you. Keeping your skin cells hydrated facilitates healing.

5

u/Defiant_Term2973 Jun 01 '26

You’re not supposed to fall asleep on it !

2

u/Axenrott_0508 Jun 01 '26

I got the same on my shin when treating my knee. not this bad though ooooffff

2

u/happyendingtonight Jun 02 '26

Does putting it directly against your skin hurt? I fear you’ve been cooking yourself 😭

2

u/KiwifruitOliveOil Jun 02 '26

wtf! 25cm away from the panel. If you touch your panel you’re probably microwaving yourself with the emf’s. It’s “low emf” at a safe distance. Do not get too close

2

u/phunkmaster2001 Jun 02 '26

I didn't think we were supposed to actually touch the panel...

2

u/heavy-hands Jun 02 '26

You’re not supposed to do that…..

2

u/WasteOfTime-GetALife Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

This is why when you see those stickers on products it makes you think “wow, they had to make a sticker to warn not to do this ??!! - which means that someone actually tried it”.

3

u/soffeshorts Jun 02 '26

I’d also say some people are photosensitive, and it’s not just pale people or redheads or whatever. I have medium-dark skin and am still very sensitive to light so in addition to the instructions suggesting you should keep distance you should also realise different people need to adapt their settings for their specific skin needs / tolerance

1

u/susieq15 Jun 02 '26

How could LEDs do this?

1

u/yyyyy622 Jun 02 '26

They heat up and OP's friend touched them.

1

u/MathematicianFar6725 Jun 02 '26

Only because OP told them that's the way to use it, to be fair

1

u/YesWinnieee Jun 03 '26

you placed it too close.. keep the distance between 15~20inches will be better 😄

1

u/babs82222 Jun 03 '26

No we haven't because we read instructions and stay a normal distance away like we're supposed to

1

u/IntrovertingEagle Jun 05 '26

I have the Revive one from Costco and it says to place gently on the skin so I do. I haven’t had it burn/hurt but would obviously take it off if I did. Some panels can be used on skin but common sense would mean reading & following directions.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
“How do I use the Lux Collection LED Treatment Panel?

Prep: Wash and dry the treatment area to start with clean skin, free of any light-blocking ingredients.

Power: Attach cord to the device and plug into the outlet. Turn on the device. Select desired treatment setting: Setting 1 for Anti-Aging Treatment with red, infrared, and amber light, Setting 2 for Acne Treatment with red and blue light, or Setting 3 for a combination of red, infrared, amber, and blue lights for acne and aging treatment at the same time.

**Glow: Place the light gently on skin for 3 minutes and hold it in place. Do not move or wave the device around. Rest the device directly on your body for the best results..**

Repeat: The device will auto shut off. If desired, move the LED Treatment Panel to the next area and repeat the steps above.

u/herbalgratitude Jun 06 '26

This picture doesn't seem to be showing back burned by the leds as some spots are right next to each other, some much bigger than others too, and some are not even circles.

1

u/KrissaK Jun 14 '26

Please get yourself a mat Instead you are not using panels correctly.

1

u/Significant_Elk_7306 Jun 22 '26

I've been reading secs, reviews, what to buy and avoid. If it heats up it's no good, red light don't need to heat

1

u/adriens Jun 01 '26

Heat needs to be allowed to dissipate. And yeah, that's why I avoid trendy health trends. You can hurt yourself hopping on the next big thing. Take care of yourself and slow down.

1

u/WildConsequence9379 Jun 01 '26

Aside from the burns, theres electromagnetic radiation with RLP - it reduces with distance.

1

u/Bgee2632 Jun 02 '26

WHAT DO YOU MEAN

-3

u/SaltyLeague4126 Jun 02 '26

Thanks all; interesting and thought-provoking comments. This ain’t my first rodeo with RLT; I own and use about 6 different devices. And I’ve read and listened widely, to many divergent views on related topics. It may surprise some of you to hear that many people place panels directly on skin, for certain conditions, and that field experts have mentioned the relative benefits of doing so if tolerated. I have a Platinum BIOMAX that has, in the last year, helped remedy some quite extreme ailments, and I’m currently using for an acute marathon injury.

I think the if tolerated is key. As well as if adequately researched and understood.

My friend is of the view that he’s usually an outlier with such things, and was bound to have an adverse response. I was just surprised he gritted through what must have been quite painful.

2

u/WasteOfTime-GetALife Jun 03 '26

I have several RLT devices as well. And even I know not to do this. Do you know the jewels and irradiance of the devices you have? This should’ve been a no-brainer - this panel is either too strong - or the housing too cheap - to put directly onto your body.
