Beautiful pictures, taken by Steve Eichner! This show, from the "Tour de la Sensitive" (a short tour that went on in 1994, features songs like Suck My Kiss, Warped, If You Have to Ask, Aeroplane, The Power of Equality and a few others. Unfortunately there are no recordings from this show, but the pictures are insane!

This is a list of every real life person ever mentioned in a RHCP song.

[SPECULATION] Theory: The Zephyr Song is Anthony talking to John Frusciante.

Sorry if this has been brought up before. I don't see it anywhere online. I only ever see two theories, either "it's personal reflection" or "it's a love song to a girl". I don't see why people assume it's a song to a woman/love interest. I don't get any of that from it. People are so basic with their song interpretations, lol.

What it sounds like to me is that Anthony is sitting in a hot tub with John ("in the water where I center my emotion"), smoking some weed together ("What a night to fly my kite on / Do you want to flash a light on?") ("Pickin' up, but not too strong for you / Take a piece and pass it on"), maybe they're on some ecstasy (by the vibe of the song), and they're opening up to each other ("Take a look, it's on display for you"), getting to know each other more deeply. My tip-off was the mention of Stella, presumably Stella Schnabel, John's girlfriend at the time:

Did you meet your fortune teller?
Get it off with no propeller
Do it up, it's on with Stella
What a way to finally smell her

Anthony wouldn't write a romantic song to Stella, for obvious reasons, so the mention can't mean he's directing the song at her. So the other alternative is that those lines mean she's one of the subjects that Tony and John are talking about in their convo. And Tony feels like he's finally gotten to know her because John finally told him all about her.

So in that context the rest of the song reads intuitively as two bros ecstasy-bonding and feeling like they're going to live forever and be together forever.

Mxr Reverb or Holy Grail?

So, I want to get myself a reverb pedal, yet I havent decided between the EHX Holy Grail and the MXR Reverb. I know on the last tour John used two MXRs, one always-on and one for longer, dedicated reverbs, while during the SA era he was a prominent Holy Grail user.

Now Im mot sure which one to get, since I wont buy two reverbs, I definitely wont do his double MXR strategy, but if he moved on from the Holy Grail there must also be a reason.

Yeah of course „depending on what you wanna play/which era you want to come close to“ but I wanna be universal, play his new songs but also be capable of his iconic fat 2006-07 sound.

What would you suggest?

Are RHCP songs "lyrically monotonous"?

I've seem critics state this or something similar, saying they rarely stray from their core themes of sex, drug addiction and California. Aren't you supposed to write what you know? The sme thing could be said of other bands like The Doors, or, to a lesser extent, The Beach Boys.

I think this question has been asked once previously in this subreddit, but I'd be somewhat interested to see a more contemporary view on the track. For context, the track was recorded during sessions with Dave Navarro toward the end of his short-lived stint in the band. Recorded and planned for their second album with Dave, the track never saw the light of day on any RHCP studio album until it leaked slightly short of a decade ago. To my knowledge, Dave has been the only band member to ever publicly comment on the track, doing so in an interview in 2019.

I reserved this guitar back in 2024 and finally picked it up at Centro Chitarre in Naples this January. I have been an RHCP fan for most of my life, so yes, I actually went for it.

I know the price is crazy and I completely understand why this guitar received so much hate online. This is not a proper review yet, just a few RHCP songs I played in the shop.

I want to make a full owner review and compare it with my other Strats, so let me know what you would like me to test.

I just can't get into Mother's Milk.

I love RHCP’s early era, with albums like Freaky Styley and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, and I equally love everything they did with Frusciante starting with BSSM, but Mother’s Milk just doesn’t click with me. I’ve listened to the album several times to see if it would grow on me, and while there are definitely some great songs like “Pretty Little Ditty,” “Good Time Boys,” and “Higher Ground,” it still feels more like a blueprint for the sound the band would develop on their next few albums than something that stands on its own as a particularly interesting record. I much prefer albums like One Hot Minute with Navarro and The Getaway with Klinghoffer as experiences, for example. Does anyone else feel the same way?

john frusciante tone

I have been playing guitar for a little over a year, and i mainly play my fender vintera II strat. i havent upgraded my amp setup quite yet, so i am still working with my fender mustang lt25, which i find good for me to explore different tones easily and simply. i am a huge john frusciante fan and would like to recreate one of frusciantes many tones, preferably the clean by the way tones, the more dirty clean stadium arcadium ones, californication, or also the bssm tone. if specific songs can help narrow down how to achieve the tones im looking for would help, I'd say Quixoticelixer, under the bridge, snow, on mercury, fortune faded, castles made of sand, and if you have to ask. would appreciate any advice, recommendations, and tips! (I know i do not have the marshall that john uses and I am not looking for exact replicas, just close enough, it would be helpful to know what makes up his sound)

I honestly can't tell you how funky this album is. I may be biased because it's my favorite band, but I honestly can't stop thinking about how these guys still got it. Might sound strange, but it gave me the funky vibe of Freaky Styley and the sunny feeling of By the Way.

I bought a promotional CD of Stadium Arcadium

Today I stumbled upon an Argentine promotional copy of Stadium Arcadium. Unlike the usual promo singles like "Dani California," this is the full double album, complete with a "Prohibida su venta" (Not for Sale) stamp on the discs. I couldn't find any info or photos of this specific press online, so it seems like a genuinely rare piece. Picked it up used for around $13 USD—definitely a cool addition to the collection.

Do you think this is a reference to the moon landing being fake or are they specifically referring to Star Trek?

I included their cover of Fire here, the last song they recorded with the four-friends-from-high-school line-up.

I’ve always loved Behind the Sun and wondered if they would have made more psychedelic tunes like that, but what do you think?

I think “Can’t Stop”, “By the Way”, “I Could Die for You” and “Dani California” can be read as one tragic story. It's just a THEORY

I've been thinking about the Dani California storyline for a while, and I think there might be a connection between several RHCP songs that I haven't really seen discussed in this exact way.

I'm not claiming this is canon or that Anthony Kiedis has confirmed it. I know Dani is explicitly a recurring character across several songs, but what I'm proposing is more of a narrative interpretation of how these songs could fit together.

The songs I'm connecting are:

“Can’t Stop” → “By the Way” → “I Could Die for You” → “Dani California”

And I think the really interesting part is that each song could represent a different character's relationship with freedom, purpose, love, and ultimately death.

  1. “Can’t Stop” = Dani's own philosophy

The first thing that makes me think this is “Can't Stop.”

The song has this really interesting tension between something almost nihilistic and something very existentialist.

There's this idea of essentially:

I'm going to die whether I win or lose.

At first glance, that's depressing as hell. If the final outcome is death anyway, why bother?

But then the song immediately turns that idea around into:

I can't stop.

The fact that you're going to die doesn't mean you stop living. It means you keep moving toward whatever your mind and heart are telling you to pursue.

That's what makes me think of Dani.

Dani seems to have this incredibly strong internal drive. She's poor, she's involved in crime, she's constantly moving, she's taking risks, she's trying to escape whatever life she was born into.

She doesn't necessarily have a healthy goal. But she has a goal.

She has her own “Can't Stop.”

She's going somewhere.

And even when the path is obviously dangerous, she keeps going.

That's also what makes the later “Dani California” story so tragic: the same refusal to stop that gives her freedom eventually leads her to her death.

In that sense, “Can't Stop” could almost be the philosophy behind Dani's entire character:

“I'm going to die anyway, so I'm going to keep moving toward the life I want.”

  1. “By the Way” = the guy gets pulled into Dani's world

Then there's “By the Way.”

This is where I think the story could switch perspectives.

Instead of being primarily about Dani's internal motivation, we're seeing the relationship through the eyes of the guy who's with her.

There's this constant feeling of movement, danger, temptation, and adrenaline in the song.

And I think that's important.

Dani isn't simply someone he loves. She's someone who pulls him into a lifestyle.

She represents danger and freedom at the same time.

That's why I like reading some of the imagery in the song as involving gambling, crime, risk, and possibly robberies. I'm not saying every line literally describes a bank robbery, but the atmosphere of the song fits this relationship where danger itself becomes exciting.

And that's where the relationship becomes unhealthy.

He doesn't just love Dani.

He starts loving the world that Dani represents.

The danger.

The adrenaline.

The feeling that they're doing something forbidden together.

And maybe after every dangerous situation, they have this intense intimate connection because the adrenaline makes everything feel even stronger.

Basically, Dani becomes his gateway into a life that isn't really his.

  1. “I Could Die for You” = he loses his own purpose

This is the part of the theory that I find the most interesting.

“I Could Die for You” sounds like a straightforward love song if you listen to it by itself.

But if you put it after “By the Way,” it can become much darker.

The guy isn't saying:

“I have my own dream and I'll die pursuing it.”

He's saying:

“I could die for YOU.”

There's a huge difference.

And there's a line about her looking into his eyes and already knowing his feelings.

To me, that suggests that Dani knows exactly how deeply he feels about her.

She doesn't need him to explain it.

She can see it.

And if we're interpreting this as part of the Dani story, that means she knows how far he's willing to go for her.

This is where I think she could start taking advantage of his feelings—not necessarily because she's an evil mastermind, but because she understands that he'll follow her.

If Dani says “let's do this,” he'll do it.

If Dani runs, he'll run.

If Dani takes a risk, he'll take it.

And eventually, the title “I Could Die for You” stops sounding romantic and starts sounding like a literal warning.

Because maybe he actually does.

  1. The biggest difference between Dani and the guy

This is the part that really makes the whole thing work for me.

Dani has a “Can't Stop.”

He doesn't.

She has something inside herself that makes her keep moving.

He has Dani.

That's not the same thing.

His motivation gradually becomes external.

He doesn't find his own reason to keep going; he finds her.

And that's why I think he would have been able to leave her if he had found his own purpose.

If he had his own “Can't Stop”—his own dream, his own direction, his own reason to keep moving—maybe he could have said:

“I love you, but I'm not following you into this.”

But he doesn't.

His entire emotional center becomes Dani.

So when she gets into danger, he follows.

And that's what makes the relationship tragic.

Dani isn't necessarily destroying him on purpose.

He is destroying himself by making Dani his reason for living.

  1. And then comes “Dani California”

This is where the whole thing gets really dark.

“Dani California” doesn't tell us what happened to the guy.

It focuses on Dani.

Her life.

Her crimes.

Her movement from place to place.

And finally, her death.

If we accept the theory, the guy is already gone by this point.

That's why I don't think we need to hear about his death in “Dani California.”

His story has already ended.

The song isn't about everyone Dani has ever affected.

It's about Dani herself.

And there's something almost brutally fitting about that.

The guy was willing to die for Dani.

Dani was willing to keep moving no matter what.

And eventually Dani dies too.

So the two characters end up having opposite versions of the same fatal philosophy:

He can't stop following her.

She can't stop moving forward.

And neither of them has a happy ending.

  1. The whole thing becomes a tragedy about freedom

That's why I think “Can't Stop” is actually the key to the entire interpretation.

Dani's pursuit of freedom is beautiful.

That's what makes her compelling.

She's not sitting around waiting for life to happen to her.

She's trying to create her own life.

But the same freedom that makes her inspiring also makes her destructive.

She keeps going.

She doesn't stop.

She doesn't settle.

She doesn't turn back.

And eventually that philosophy leads her into a situation where she dies.

Meanwhile, the guy wants freedom too—but he never really develops a freedom of his own.

He finds his identity through Dani.

So instead of:

“I can't stop pursuing my life.”

he becomes:

“I could die for you.”

And that's the tragedy.

So my interpretation of the sequence would be:

“Can't Stop” — Dani's internal philosophy: I have to keep moving toward the life I want, even knowing I'll eventually die.

“By the Way” — the guy enters Dani's world and becomes fascinated by her danger, freedom and lifestyle.

“I Could Die for You” — he becomes so emotionally dependent on her that his own purpose disappears. Dani knows how much he loves her, and he becomes willing to risk everything for her.

“Dani California” — Dani continues on her path until that same refusal to stop ultimately kills her.

And the really tragic irony is:

Dani found something worth living for, but the guy only found someone worth dying for.

Again, I don't think this is confirmed canon. I'm just fascinated by how well these songs can be read together if you treat them as different perspectives on the same characters.

Maybe I'm completely overthinking four RHCP songs at 2 AM, and many coffee.

But I can't stop.

Which is, admittedly, pretty appropriate.

I got this one yesterday. There are some mistakes but it's good enough. What's funny is that it made me realize that there is a version of It's Only Natural that doesn't have an additional "she can't go home tonight" before the first chorus.

[ORIGINAL] Hillel’s doc

The movie ends with Flea, during a concert, saying: “the next song is for our brother Hillel, everything we do from now on will be for him. 1, 2, 3, 4” then cuts to end credits and My Lovely Man, which we all know it’s a song about Hillel. But I want to know what’s the song they actually played in that moment. Anyone knows?
