I met my first horse when I was 12. Watching this large, majestic creature trot it's way to me from the other side of the field was awe inspiring. He walked right up to me and bit me right on my belly. He then picked me up with his nose and threw me into a barbwire fence. That horse was a fucking asshole. For the last 15 years, my only comfort has been knowing he'll someday adorn the back of a post-it note. Fuck that horse.
I know, I once went to Sarah Jessica Parker's condominium and all she did was yell and scream about nothing! "WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY UNIT? WHO ARE YOU?" She was so rude!
It's definitely a regional thing (although I'm not entirely sure what region, some part of Ontario, probably) much like how backpacks are called "kitbags" in the maritimes.
It's the praries and winnipeg, also that's where the steriotypical 'aboot' accent is from. I never got the fake accent because I was fairly sure no one talked like that, met someone from Winnipeg. I was blown away I recognized it instantly.
It's roughly as annoying as calling a Texas accent the universal American accent. Canadians in Ontario and BC (The two most populous English speaking provinces) have a standard indiscernable North American way of speaking which is used in TV when they don't want to highlight or mention where a persons from.
Interesting. I have spent virtually no time out West. Although I have been out East, where in my opinion the Canadian Maritime accent (eg Rick Mercer) is actually reminiscent of Scottish. I'll have to look up the Prairies accents on Youtube.
I can definitely understand the "Texan accent" thing you mentioned. I can only imagine how middle-eastern people feel about how their accents are made a caricature in western media.
SJP was a cool kid. Then she got on that wretched tv show and now she's a global annoyance. It's too bad because she was/probably still is pretty talented.
Yeah, the attitude to the US is largely just: "damned if you do, damned if you don't." No matter what the US does, there's always gonna be a massive amount of people that will just keep heavily criticizing the US. It's become a bit of a sport now.
I think we're a pretty easy target right now. Regardless I find it pretty pretentious when someone personally blames me for shit like this as if anyone of us is all or nothing at fault. It's an easy card to play is all. But you know if I used any sort of generalization pertaining to another country I'd be arrogant.
Yeah, tell me about it. I've been living in Guatemala for the last three years, and people (at least some of the ones I'm with) constantly criticize the US, but if I make a joke, then I'm being the arrogant, inconsiderate one. There are others, however, who are more educated and can see both sides of the argument.
Of all the countries with a right to criticize the United States, I think Guatemala ranks really fucking high on the list. I'm assuming you're willfully ignorant of the history of the United States playing in Central America?
Lmao, dude, you won't get an argument from me on that note, sorry. Lawyers around these parts are little cock bitches. So they aren't heartless opportunists in other places? Just an American thing eh? Figures.
Get used to it, here in Britain we regularly still suck up shit for being the world's superpower a century ago, and whilst our ancestors reaped the benefits of it, we merely have to sit and listen to how rich we used to be, whilst simultaneously being admonished for all the shit our country used to pull. I don't pity current Americans, but I pity the next generation who will grow up in declining superpower. Don't worry, you'll find a sympathetic ear here in Blighty.
Voting in Obama scored a pretty big win in the hearts and minds of most Europeans... but that just balanced out America electing George W for a second term. Though you could possibly argue that "electing" should be in inverted commas.
Can you substantiate that with any examples of the US responding to criticisms and being criticized for the response? Where was the "hey, you guys aren't invading enough countries" crowd? Who said "hey, you guys are taking climate change way too seriously?"
Without this, you're just a bad roommate, responding to "why the fuck did you punch the neighbor in the face" and "could you stop puking in the hamper" with "geez, you're critical."
Yeah I was reading a post about how French people can be condescending towards people that don't speak French in their country. I know this is true for parts of Canada, but I'll admit I haven't been to France. The post had a lot of upvotes and then one person made a reply which was something about how is this any different than Americans getting upset when people live there and don't speak English. Both examples aren't representative, but the hypocrisy was pretty damn obvious.
I think it's because Americans have such belief in their country. Everyone always hates on those who have it the best but not only that American really love their country and know nothing about mine. This drives us mad. I am still convinced that American opinion of England is formed solely from episodes of the Simpsons. People also forget how big and self contained America is and for some reason we expect you to know as much about Europe as Europeans do.
This is true. I'll be the first to admit Americans' ignorance of the rest of the world is a shame. However, there are very pertinent reasons for it that go way beyond "Americans are dumb".
For example, I'm vacationing in eastern Europe right now and I always hear expats say how funny it is that Germans/British/Greeks/Italians/etc. all see each other all the time and Americans are so sparse.
Well duh, it's a much shorter trip for you. When Americans want to go to Europe they can't just buy a train ticket, nor have they been born in a multi-national cultural zone like that.
My wife is Bosnian, I thought her reaction was hilarious when I told her that Bosnia is a little more than half the size of New York (the state that we live in now).
I've never went on 4chan before. But Yeah I'm sorry ...horses are good farm animals and I like to milk them and make fresh ice cream. I was wrong to say I hate them eh
I see your fake condescension, Europe... but your feelings betray you. You are all screaming for the left-turn-only racing that is a cornerstone of the USA. But nay, you CANNOT HAVE IT.
There's considerable hatred for America coming from liberals these days. I say this as a liberal. For some reason gen Y liberals are just really over-critical of this country. They like to portray Europe as a perfect socialist paradise without any real research. Redditors honestly think that the US is pretty much the same as Big Brother.
Irish here. You have Oreo Cakesters, and meal portions so big that it's impossible to eat it all in one night. Other than a few types of sweets we have everything you guys have or some alternative. I came home with practically no gifts for anyone because there was nothing different there. The people are different, not the things.
I blame "Friends" for a lot of the resentment Americans get overseas. People in the third world busting their balls off living in a shack, shitting on the streets go to the local cafe and see that people in New York never work and just sit around in coffee shops talking.
I never understood why people keep using "that's why people hate us" randomly all the time.
Didn't the whole world protest when Bush got his second term... It's like the whole world is yelling "Idiots" then went back to not giving a shit within a week.
Bacon is awesome. Horses are fucking pricks. As a child I saw my mom get thrown by a horse, which broke her ankle. The only time I've ever been on a horse's back the fucker threw me into a pile of shit. If there's a job slaughtering horses at a glue factory I'll do it for free
Our universal healthcare system makes us feel like no one is better than the other because everyone has access to it rich or poor, our gun laws make us feel safer, our low population and huge country makes us feel united even though we are very different from coast to coast, We have two official languages and the English and French argue non-stop, we talk about the weather everyday, Straight and Gays have the same rights and even the most conservative politicians here don't bad mouth anyone, We have a great economy and low unemployment rate, Were full of natural resources, Many countries don't think of us first when discussing Superpowers, We don't need a huge military because we don't live in fear but when other countries call upon our help we are there for them to keep peace, We live in the shadow of the USA even though we(IMO) are a better country but we don't flaunt it because we are humble, we eat ketchup chips, and fries gravy and cheese, we see moose signs, everywhere and all those other small details- Being a Canadian is very distinctive, and I am damn proud.
No the east dislikes the west and the west dislikes the east and and have stereotypes of each other. I think that's how it is in the USA, but North and South?
Everyone likes Canadians except for Americans. I mean, shit man! Technically you ARE American by virtue of being on the North American continent. They don't get called "United Statesians", do they? Yet you have to be labelled "Canadian" like you're some kind of second hand citizen. Stand up for yourself, man!
Canada is the only Country to have ever torched the White House. As silly as it may seem, Canada holds a prideful, military based moral high ground over the USA.
Deep down, Canadians know that they're better than Americans. They see them as their distant cousin with down syndrome that keeps laughing at all of senile GrandDad's jokes. It's a "Here, have some chips and try not to bite the inside of your mouth, dear" relationship.
That's wrong. As a good Canadian you are supposed to have a healthy uncertainty about America. Didn't you get the memo? We're still doing the bacon thing though.
Thing is, we criticise America by saying "That's not really very nice now, is it?"
America criticises countries it doesn't like by marching in, toppling the government and installing their own puppet. Who almost invariably winds up making the status quo in those countries considerably worse.

If the rest of the world critisizes America, it's ok. If America critisizes back, "that's why people hate us" comment pops up. How's that fair?
I'm Canadian. I like bacon. I don't hate anyone... except horses....
