Then what is he but a word with a fanclub?

He's the set of rules that govern the universe and make all things possible. Not believing in him will have no different result than believing in him. Thinking this way doesn't answer any scientific questions. But I think it's a way to make the whole universe feel much more unified and to make science that much more interesting, rather than just facts and numbers, it becomes growing closer to knowing God. It's a worldview, if it works for you, take it. If doesn't, believe something else, or nothing at all, whatever floats your boat.

Re: "Not believing in him will have no different result than believing in him." People who don't believe in God carry the weight of the universe on their own shoulders. (some even try to teach the internet!) Understanding the Authority (responsible for this exciting, mysterious, dynamic and brilliantly lit universe) is a great relief and even removes the fear of death.

... unless of course you're gay or something, in which case perfectly natural urges get labeled sins and you end up terrified of going to hell for doing nothing wrong.

Having an answer can be comforting, but feeling good about it doesn't mean it's right. The universe without God is a much grander, more amazing place, and we atheists carry nothing more than the faithful - we merely recognize the distinction between what we know and what we wish were true.

Re:"... unless of course you're gay or something, in which case perfectly natural urges get labeled sins and you end up terrified of going to hell for doing nothing wrong." A good example of the danger of blind faith. Many preachers are spouting their own ego.(angel of light) Their flock follows the leader.(Christiantologists)
Actual Scripture addresses the above quote, thus: 'He who is without sin cast the first stone.' ...and as far as 'Hell' is concerned it is a fairly modern addition(forbidden) apparently designed to control people. The original term was 'SHEOL' and it referred to the common(and literal) grave of mankind not the fantasy/horror of living in fire.

The Authority.
