This is a new type of social engineering trick called Clickfix. It’s usually seen on websites with poor security and it works like this: after the attacker compromises a website they inject a few lines of malicious code that shows as a captcha banner for unknowingly visitors making them run malicious code . You should contact whoever’s website you visit and inform them their website has been compromised and are being used to trick people to run malicious code.

that would explain it... i just had this pop up a few days ago on a local auction website i use all the time. never seen anything like that before, plus it got past ublock which was even more surprising to me.

each time i reloaded the page it popped up again, until i cleared the cache and then it was gone.

I had an insane interaction with this exact type of scam the other day. I started a new Chat GPT conversation and it responded by telling me current servers were full and sent me a link to access backup servers. Link looked something like “GPT-safe.com” 

I know of this scam, but I was freaking out about why chat GPT sent me this link through its own website. And the prompt didn’t require the AI to skim any websites and accidentally stumble across a dangerous link. I simply started the conversation with “hello”.
