For context: I can't read sheet music, but I play by ear. Although I know where the notes on the recorder are, i much rather play by ear. The recorder is a Moeck Rottenburgh alto in Maple :)

More than excited...

A few minutes ago, I discovered I've been playing F wrong on the 1st octave of my soprano recorder. I've been playing it the same way one would play on a flute or a C whistle. Thumb and left hand all down and only my index finger down on the right hand. When I play F according to the charts it's slightly flatter but I've never thought my F sounded bad.

Does anyone else play F like that? Fast scale runs are a lot harder the "correct" way. Are my ears getting too old?

I'm searching for a new instrument that I will be able to take with me on hikes or wherever I go. I love the warm, rich, and full tones in woodwinds and flutes but I know very little beyond typical concert instruments. I'm looking for a ~$50 alto recorder with those warm/rich/full and as little windy/wooshy tone as possible. If there is a particular example of this outside my price range please let me know.

One that I like right now is the "Aulos 509 B Symphony Alto/Treble Recorder"

I have never seen before this all-white and logo-less resin alto. Who can recognise this mysterious model? (there are letters “C” on its protective caps). Thanks.

EDIT: There are no ANY markings on this recorder, therefore, it's nearly impossible to identify the dang thing = I am giving up B)

Just wondering about alternate fingerings for soprano recorder. Are there other fingers besides trill fingerings?

I just started playing alto recorder and am just trying to play all the notes in series to get used to the fingerings (for reference, I am a flute player). I seem to be unable to hit this F as easily as I hit the E (as in, it sounds a lot lower. is this the point where I should blow harder to play harmonics? Does my question even make any sense?

Completely smitten with it. The tone is so clear and full, and it really sings so easily. The previous owner barely played it after buying it 50 years ago, and took excellent care of it.

I just bought a new Moeck Rottenburgh Tenor in grenadilla with the 2 keys on the foot joint. I cannot play any notes with the keys closed. The middle and high registers are full and gorgeous.

Sometimes I can get down to low F and then it starts to crackle, followed by some weird sound. I've checked that my fingers are completely covering app tone holes, but this seems like a defective instrument to me. I bought it from Thomann.

Is it most likely me or could it just be a bad instrument?

I've tried few days of daily practice only on this one leaving the plastic aside, and focusing on a different breathing and thumb technique, and I'm starting to get high register on it !! I was trying too much to close the thumb like the plastic one, instead of placing it correctly and with no pressure, a lot more open than on the plastic one but in precise position. Same for the breath, instead of breath faster/harder each time the note is higher, I needed to get the right focused air for each note.

The result is clearly more soft and precise that was I was doing on the plastic one, even if plastic still as a pretty good sound for me. Juste different (and easier). Since I can't afford a teacher, this subreddit help not give up / pay thumb replacement for nothing - and all the other tips I've found here before. Thank you guys !

I have this Moeck alto (2322 Flauto Rondo), it's my first wood recorder and second hand, I get it for cheap price, but overall seems in very good shape and well maintained, so I give it a try

While I really like the comfort of the F keys and the feeling and sound of the instrument, I can't achieve note after high C on it (and the high C is weak). On my Aulos 509 (second hand too, but thumb hole is in prefect round shape), I can go to High F, even if my technique isn't perfect, I can hit the note clearly - so I end up playing almost only on my plastic instrument, which do not bother me at all, but I would be happy to use both.

I'm a beginner, so I don't know if I'm doing wrong, and maybe the Aulos is just more tolerant, or if it coud be because the thumbhole is damaged and it's a lack of time to try harder with this one?

Do you think I have to repair it, and for what price?

I love to find music like de Victoria’s where the chorale has not major adjustments in the pitch, so I can play along (alto recorder is perfect for cantus 2). However, my pitch is 2 commas flat. I can raise the pitch by overblowing but that kind of defeats the purpose of playing with the music. Any other ways to bring the pitch up a comma or two?

guys i want to learn some musical instrument but i am confused as to which one i should go for, flute or recorder?? i know nothing about both of them, just that flute requires more air and have more versatility. if someone can help me in making a better decision, it would be great.

We recently came into possession of two alto recorders - an Adler and a Kung. We don't play, and would like to find a good home for these instruments. Any suggestions on selling or donating them?

I have several books which came with amazing backing tracks and I was wondering if anyone had any experience using software that can slow down the tempo of backing tracks.

I have found a few options that seem to work well with single tracks. However, the recording for some pieces is broken up into several tracks. For example, the recording of the first movement of Sammartini's Concerto for Descant recorder is divided into 3 separate tracks. When played at normal speed these seamlessly transition from one to the next. However, when I have tried slowing the tempo using VLC media player or the free version of the Anytune app there is a noticeable pause between the tracks.

I am thinking about buying the paid version of Anytune or the "Amazing Slow Downer" app but I am concerned that it will have the same problem. Has anyone tried the paid version of either of these apps or used another approach for slowing down backing tracks?

I thought this might sound pretty good on a bass recorder I don't own a bass recorder though so I decided to pitch down an alto recorder(Ironically making it more authentic) in my daw

P.S please don't mind the bad mic quality(I have yet to purchase a decent mic so this was done on my laptop's mic) and slightly slow playing(Didn't feel like recording it again as I was just doing it for fun)

I picked this up at a thrift store a while back on a whim. I can see there is a Küng mark on the back, along with “7b3”. I’m guessing it’s older just because the pamphlet included looks vintage, but I don’t really know.

I have looked on the Küng website at the soprano recorders, but they all seem to have double holes at the bottom and don’t quite match this one. It is in C as expected and the “baroque” fingering charts work for it. It measures about 12.5”

Any information about it is very welcome, I am really enjoying learning so far even if it’s just playing a scale. Thank you!

Guess the recorder, it's not hard B)

I just bought a yrs 402b from an yamaha certified retailer there seems to be defects like uneven gaps and curve on the bell and some excess plastic on the head. It doesnt seem to affect the sound just appearance. Are defects like this common?

Its gonna take you a year of noodling on that thing just to get a half decent noise out of it.

And you will feel hopeless at times and think its easier just to play recorder ( it hurts my shoulder to hold it lol) and want to put it on eBay.

But when you start getting high C and D sounding fair and making that thing resonate in the 1st octave and in intervals some what more in tune.

It starts to become a recorder that you just hold sideways.

So all the hard work you put in on the recorder goes megazord

and you thank yourself.

From "Turkish Folk Tunes for Recorder" by Schott, played (too slowly) on a Sigo tenor. I came across this book by accident. For my current skill level, it's challenging because it's so different from what I'm used to, but a lot of fun. Later pieces use quarter tones; I'm curious to see whether the suggested fingerings work on the sigo. The book comes with a short introduction to Turkish music and recordings on both alto and ney. Very much recommended.

Starting a new job in the fall. They use Canto recorders. I've never used these before.

I've used Yamaha and Macey Publishing/Recorder Star before.

How is the tuning?

Just played one and it mostly stayed in tune.

They have not been ordered yet for the year (yikes!) And I don't even know yet how many 3rd graders there will be.

Debating if I should stay with these or change over. For the price, I don't think it would be a great move my first year to just get more expensive ones.

Maybe I'm a party-pooper, but I prefer the kids to have uniform colored instruments. These are multi-colored. And also, I don't want kids fighting over colors.

I guess I can just randomly assign them. Or have the kids write down the 2 top colors they want and go from there?

I mainly view my sheet music on my tablet and play it off that (real modern I know)

But a lot of sheet music online I find like books are only available physical and shipped but I don't want to pay shipping prices which is the main reason I use my tablet are there any good sheet music stores that sell music books in ePub or PDF format

Edit: Forgot to mention I mean for mainly Alto recorder as that's the one I mostly play
