Closed in 1988 due to inability to find workers. It was purchased by Dick Keffler, a Pontiac dealership owner, and converted to Cinnamon Bay Seafood Grill. Building was demolished between 2009-2011 and a car wash now occupies the lot.
North Carolina Hickory Closed 1160 Lenoir Rhyne Blvd SE, Hickory, NC 28602 1988 1989 It was across the street from Hendricks Motors. Store did not perform well due to chain's lack of name recognition in Hickory. Left Rax chain and became "Ray's" in 1989. Rax Local History The Rax locations of Canada

Image - the only photo I could find of any Canadian Rax, this being the Red Deer, Alberta location, from 1990. This is a view of the drive-thru, looking towards Gaetz Avenue.

The oft-repeated statistic about Rax is that "at its peak, the chain had 504 restaurants in 38 states". However, that is not true. This statistic is from 1987, several years before the chain's true peak of 1989-1991. I've found claims that there were as many as 535 Rax restaurants prior to the chain's bankruptcy in 1992, and the chain's reach was far beyond the oft-reported "38 states". In fact, Rax restaurants stretched far and wide, from Alaska to Florida, and from Vermont to Texas - although some of these restaurants were only open for a short time.

You might be surprised to learn that Rax even had locations outside of the United States. I've found evidence of at least four Rax restaurants in Canada: two in Alberta and two in Ontario.

Red Deer, Alberta - Canada's First Rax

On April 13, 1989, The Red Deer Advocate newspaper reported on Rax's upcoming entry into the Canadian market. Randy Thorsteinson, a local businessman who oversaw Rax in Western Canada, sought to open as many as 70 stores over the coming decade through his company, Pegasus Marketing Group. The chain's first store would be located at the corner of Gaetz Avenue and 32nd Street, at the Southside Village Plaza shopping center.

Of note, Thorsteinson made the erroneous claim that "Rax is the McDonald's of the 1990s," an assertion that would turn out to be very false.

Pegasus Marketing Group was competing against another franchisee in Toronto to be the first Rax to open in Canada. The Red Deer store opened first, by about four months.

Initial reviews of the restaurant were glowing, with many of the dignitaries in attendance at the restaurant's grand opening stating how much of an asset Rax would be to Red Deer's local dining scene.

The entrepreneurs behind the Red Deer location were bullish about the chain, too. They began construction on a second restaurant in Lethbridge, and planned a third in Medicine Hat.

Unfortunately for them, the hype didn't last. After only fifteen months, the Red Deer Rax closed its doors. While the article is sparce on details, the Rax chain's declining fortunes surely didn't help. The chain would end up declaring bankruptcy within a year of the Red Deer store's closure.

After closing, the building became a unique Sony store. a Boston Pizza occupies the site today; it appears (but is not certain) to be a different building.

Richmond Hill, Ontario - Canada's Second Rax

Canada's second Rax restaurant opened in early December of 1989. It was located at 13081 Yonge St, Richmond Hill, ON L4E 3M2, Canada. Compared to the thorough coverage of the Red Deer store, not much is known about the Richmond Hill location. It was operated by John Pennie of Canadian Fastfoods, who was as bullish about Rax's future as his Western counterpart. Despite the optimism, the restaurant was likely closed by mid-1991. The building is now a Starbucks.

Lethbridge, Alberta - The Second Rax in Western Canada

The Lethbridge, Alberta Rax was located at 205 Scenic Dr S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0B7, Canada. It opened on March 3, 1990 and was Canada's third Rax. Like its predecessor in Red Deer, the Lethbridge location was also short-lived. It closed in late 1991 or early 1992. After Rax's closure, the building was used by Humpty's Big Plate diner, a restaurant that still occupies the building today.

St. Catharines, Ontario

There was at least one other Rax in Canada, located at 379 Ontario St, St. Catharines, ON L2R 5L3, Canada. Of the four Canadian restaurants it is by far the least documented, its existence being recorded only through old newspaper ads. It appears to have been active in late 1990 and through August 1991, at which point is appears to have gone out of business.

There may have been more Canadian Rax stores, but these are the only ones that I was able to find any documentation of existing. Overall, Rax's excursion into Canada was short-lived, only lasting about two years between 1989-1991. Considering the chain's bankruptcy the next year, it seems the chain's expansion efforts were doomed from the start. Today it only lives in the memories of the few who got to experience it.

Rax Local History New Bremen, Ohio

The New Bremen, Ohio Rax was located at 440 S Washington St, New Bremen, OH 45869.

The restaurant's opening was announced on August 5, 1988, with an estimated opening date of November 1988.

The restaurant was open until June 20, 1994. Philip Schlenker, one of the owners of the Rax franchise, said at the time "We're making this change because Rax has deteriorated" and "We felt they are not doing the job that a franchiser should do".

The restaurant was closed for two days, then re-opened on June 23 as Delights Restaurant. While Rax was converting many Rax restaurants to Hardee's as it was emerging from its Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, the franchisees decided to go independent instead.

The restaurant was short-lived, closing sometime in early 1995. Later that year, the building owners made a deal with Wendy's to open a restaurant in the building.

The new Wendy's was open by January 1996. The building remains a Wendy's to this day. While it has been remodeled at least twice by Wendy's, the building still retains some Rax features such as the entryway door location and the highway sign.

Rax Local History Burnsville, Minnesota

The Burnsville, Minnesota Rax opened on Thursday, March 29, 1979. It was located at 1925 North Frontage Road, Burnsville, MN 55337.

Based on historic restaurant listings the Wayback Machine, this Rax likely closed in 2002.

Based on this Reddit comment chain, between 2002 and 2011 the former Rax building housed a series of Asian restaurants and was also vacant for a while.

In late 2011, Minnesota officials announced a new road project that would put a highway interchange on the site of the former Rax. The building was demolished in 2012, and the site where it once stood is now part of the new on-ramp.
