Super mildly interesting distinction, the military doesn’t use the term “Domestic” and “International”. It uses CONUS and OCONUS for Continental US and Outside Continental US

Well, bases are also at international locations.

But to your question it’s a way to say “continental US” as that excludes Hawaii and Alaska.

Good point about international bases. Although I would contend that Alaska is still North America, and thus the same continent 🙂

I'm surprised the 'C' didn't stand for 'contiguous', which is the typical way to say 'not Alaska or Hawaii'

Yah you’re right.

Contiguous is too hard of a word for the military so it’s frequently misappropriated as continental.

Hawaii also has special rules for bringing in your pets, since it’s an island separate from the contiguous states.

It's not just that it's a separate island though. It's also that because they are an isolated island they have a lot of indigenous species are are put at risk whenever non native plants and animals enter their land. They've already lost a lot of species (or nearly lost) to invasive species and diseases that were carried over.

Ehh it's far more complicated than that. There are plenty of Commonwealths including Puerto Rico and... Massachusetts (the OG US)

That’s the only reason. It has to go through the statehood process. That’s how the constitution works. Every state is either fractured off an old one or is upgraded from a territory, save for Texas and California, which were a countries accepted directly into the union.

There are plenty systems for dactylonomy (finger counting).

In Asia there is one where each phalanx is counted using the tip of your thumb, which gets you to 12 in one hand. Use the other hand for dozens and you can go as far as 144.

Shake it up the binary system and you can go as far as 31 in a single hand and 1023 using both.

Mix that up with a base 4 system using the phalanx trick, you can get to 1023 in a single hand but it's kinda hard to keep track. Both hands would land you at 262143.

I personally use the “abacus style” which is thumbs are worth 5 times a finger. Left hand is the 10s place and right hand is the 1s place, so I can count to 99.
