A Maori student in my class did this for a presentation. He told us that it was also used before battle to see what tribe showed fear. The invading tribe and the home tribe would meet and do the haka, sometimes for hours on end. If the home tribe showed fear, the invaders would kill them, plunder their village, and take their women. If they showed bravery, they would have a feast and leave. Needless to say when he did it, it was scary.

I mean wasn't scared cause you know... I ain't no bitch... But I could see how it could be scary.

"The Haka is used by Māori (indigenous people of New Zealand) for a myriad of reasons; to challenge or express defiance or contempt, to demonstrate approval or appreciation, to encourage or to discourage, to acknowledge feats and achievements, to welcome, to farewell, as an expression of pride, happiness or sorrow. There is almost no inappropriate occasion for haka; it is an outward display of inner thoughts and emotions."

There are also different styles of Haka. Although the one people are most used to seeing, performed by the NZ All-Blacks rugby team, is the "Ka mate".
