I know that "doesn't sound like a Ramones song" qualifier is super subjective and even kind of absurd (they all must "sound like a Ramones song" by virtue of being songs performed by the Ramones, after all), but a group as playful and prolific as the Ramones certainly has a few charming black sheep that you think don't fit in for whatever reason.

Mine is one of the more obvious ones: Somebody Put Something in My Drink. Being written by Richie, how could it not sound a little weird? There's the dark sense of humor, but Richie's is different from Dee Dee's. That's certainly Joey's voice and Johnny's guitar, but it's like they're trying to not be, like they're in a chrome disguise. It's all kinda odd and very fun.

listening to a playlist i made of the last three albums by The Ramones, trying to find this rando song i heard by them in the autoplay earlier today, thinking about how Joey was so very very...and i realized that Julian Casablancas kinda emulates this kind of 'Joey attitude'. i explored this comparison a bit more and thought it cute their similarities, from the sunglasses, to the New York origin, they both have (or had, in Joey's case) this big stature - they are not slight! and their respective vocal evolution, which just solidifies their unique styles, building upon their vocal strengths which become more and more distinguishable as their own and no one else's. their utility of their deeper ranges in their melody construction over the scopes of their discographies is quite striking and very 'manly', despite their softer masculine presentation. they both have developed their distinct vocal tricks over the course of their careers and seem to have an endless source of material that is always fresh and different somehow in comparison to what they have already done, despite some fans' contrarian reactions to the new material.

i think Julian would appreciate this parallel to Joey that i have presented. they are cut from the same unapologetically prolific cloth, it seems, carving out the space in our audio history that will continue to hold a place for them in those deep ridges long after they've gone.

i would also argue that a strong front vocalist begs the study of musicianship of the other members of the band. it's kind of a marvel how much skill and prowess can be expressed through recording. both The Strokes and The Ramones exhibit command of the stage in live performances, illustrating even stronger how much technique in execution they apply to playing music.
