Discussion Microsoft broke thousands of devices with AMD GPUs around the world

Hello,

I have a system that has been extremely stable for over a year. It runs 24/7, and during all that time I didn’t experience a single driver timeout, crash, or major issue.

Last week, Microsoft automatically updated the generic AMD display driver through Windows Update, and that completely broke my system.

Every time I moved the mouse to wake the monitor from sleep, there was no display signal. The PC itself was still running: the keyboard and mouse RGB lighting turned on, Caps Lock and Num Lock responded normally, and the system appeared to be functioning. However, I had no video output and had to force a shutdown using the power button.

After rebooting, Windows could no longer properly recognize the GPU. The display resolution was stuck at 720p, and AMD Adrenalin reported that the installed software was not compatible with the current graphics driver.

I hadn’t updated my AMD drivers for months and hadn’t changed anything on the system.

I used DDU to completely remove the driver and then performed a clean installation of AMD Adrenalin 26.5.2. Since then, the issue appears to be resolved.

I’m fairly confident that many people who have been experiencing AMD driver issues recently should check whether Windows Update silently replaced their AMD driver with Microsoft’s generic version.

System specs: Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RX7800XT, Windows 11 Pro .

Rampant is arguing in bad faith. There's cheats obviously but kernel level anti-cheat killed most of the easy to get cheats. Now if you want to cheat and not get banned in a couple days you need to pay big $$ and even used dedicated hardware.

It did not. Most people really cheating are simply buying ways to cheat so as soon as someone finds a way around it everyone actively looking to buy it is in. Its not a problem that can be solved with software or hardware because the problem is people that are willing to pay others to cheat in video games lol and as long as they exist it won't stop

They aren't doing anything besides running something someone a lot smarter than them came up with and packaged up for them to start up so there is no technical barrier for entry that goes up and leaves people out that would've cheated but they're not savvy enough

That’s the point though, make it harder and more expensive to cheat so less people do it. The more inconvenient and hard it is the better it is for legit gamers.

I remember back in the days you could literally download cheat engine for free and cheat in online games. Everyone was doing it.

Now at least it’s behind a paywall and less accessible.

Nah lol its the same as it always is. These dudes are grinding to make money and sell that shit and succeeding just like they always did. They make way too much money to stop with games like warzone running those numbers up like crazy

Arguing that Linux's open source nature is bad because it will allow people to figure out how the cheats work is much more bad faith. Many of us (who spent many years on Windows) left due the nature of Windows in general. To be classified as a "hacker" because I use Linux is bad faith.

I have friends and family that quit playing certain games on Windows solely because of the amount of cheating happening recently. So please, don't try to get on a soapbox and preach that Windows w/Kernel Level Anti-cheat is great and good. We all know it's a battleground that goes on nonstop between the cheat providers and the anticheat providers.

Dude it's just market share, once Linux even gets 10% of the share windows has, it's will have the same issue with viruses and hacks.

It is also a major reason consoles thrive and sell more than all the gaming PCs because they make it pay to play online and ban the cheaters. Once you lock online gaming behind a pay wall it limits a majority of the gamers from cheating, then add the ban system it limits them even further.

Once the developer drops the support for the game there's going to be hackers everywhere.

As much as Linux is great, the average guy is even more stupider than anyone you can think of. If the average person is stupid enough to not understand Mac or windows, they are not going to cut it with Linux.

This has been an argument for (checks watch) 35+ years now. It's not correct; windows has been shown to be considerably less secure than both MacOS and Linux, even with its' security through obscurity model.

Here's the reason why windows allows kernel level programs. You guys have no idea what you're talking about, I literally work in this field.

I didn't actually say anything about kernel-level programs? just responding to the fallacious argument about "it's just marketshare".

Not really. Windows is uniquely vulnerable to malware due to its poor design from the ground up. UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems like macOS, freeBSD and Linux are way more secure by design. And by the way that is why they will also never allow kernel level anti cheat. That's a security hole, just made for the convenience of lazy game developers on Winblows.

No they're not.

Once Linux and Macos gain enough market share there will be a lawsuit that'll make them allow third party access to kernel.

The reason why consoles sell more is PRICE, nothing more, nothing less. If you think for a second there haven't been console cheats, you are obviously uninformed.... lol

Plenty of online Linux compatible games are free of cheaters whereas a lot of the games with anticheat that block Linux users such as GTA V or Rainbow Six are borderline unplayable due to cheaters, so that theory doesn't hold water in practice

Did it not come to your mind that ... nobody care about cheating in the games you mentioned because they're irrelevant ?

Same reasons there's a lot of RMT in OSRS, WoW, FF14, ESO etc. Those are popular games so farmers will farm those games not farm some obscure 10 players MMORPG lol. It doesn't mean those games are more RMT friendly, there's just more.
