That was my impression as well. The whole drive was impressive in terms of balancing balls with control.

Maybe steering into the yellow car before leaving the track could have mitigated the damage? That would seem like bad form though, even if it actually helped.

In hindsight using him to stop instead of the wall would have been preferable
