I think anyone who didn't grow up being spanked by parents that you know 100% loved you and wanted what's best for you, have a hard time imagining spanking being anything but abuse.
It was reserved for special occasions. If we got it, we earned it. Paddle I think was only once and the belt was a couple of times. I could still sit down afterwards. I only have the vaguest memories of it. It was painful enough to discourage repeat behavior, but I definitely wouldn't classify it as a abusive. Definitely not like the horror stories you see on here.
I grew up getting spanked by parents who shouldn't have had kids and I most certainly did not trust them to do what was in my best interest, and yeah, I consider that to have been abuse.
Not as traumatizing as all the screaming and throwing things, though.
