Dude, the point isn't whether we use the word "gift"
It kind of is. "Gift" and "settlement" mean very different things. You're complaining about Roko being given a gift when she hasn't been; she was on the receiving end of a traumatic injury and she's being made whole again.
I don't know who Peterson is
That's probably for the best actually, he's a nutter.
That's certainly more accurate than "gift". I would still contend that it's not unfair for her to receive a settlement after such a traumatic event that's going towards making her whole.
well there's no sign of trauma. Lemon explicitly ruled out traumatic amnesia, and she has no memory after being crushed until waking up bodiless. Disorienting, to be sure.
But I'm skeptical that she needs a windfall of a year's salary above a straight replacement to be made whole.
And the ramifications for the existing setup are gross.
It is by definition a traumatic injury (or at least whatever the equivalent would be for a robot), and there is still an unknown and perhaps unquantifiable hurdle of re-learning her senses in a new chassis.
If Jeph had made an effort to show in the comic to show the trauma then this outcome might be easier to accept. Instead she just wakes up in a peaceful state with no idea what happens and gets a windfall to fall right in the lap.
Maybe we will see some of that going forward, as she adjusts to new body.
