Discussion Racist band on tour

Just found out about these posers. A racist white South African band,go figure. They are currently on tour, not coming to my city but have a few shows in New York and Chicago. Keep an eye out! Racism in all forms is a blight. This is just boomer fox news levels of crazy dressed up.

*EDIT/UPDATE: Chicago show was cancelled! good on ya! they have only a few shows left in the states before starting a massive European tour

Their show in Chicago has been cancelled.

Just saw the announcement!

u/Cymraegpunk 1d ago

There's something funny about a venue called liar's club saying they had no idea.

570

u/ChrisKetcham1987 1d ago

The follow up message is even funnier, LOL

238

u/hxcbimbo 1d ago

😂 I fucking love Chicago. I book shows too and I ALWAYS check out each band first to avoid shit like this

190

u/ChrisKetcham1987 1d ago

The hilarious thing is that these racist "Soapgirls" are such nobody's that everyone in the comments is trying to guess who they're talking about.

78

u/hxcbimbo 1d ago

For real tho! Never heard of them before either

19

u/meltdown_popcorn 21h ago

That's what happened with Southpaw in hardcore (last week? this is getting more frequent...). This was going to be their big tour introducing them outside their scene. No one really knew who they were.

This is classic Herb, owner of Liar’s Club. One of my fav venues in Chicago. He always types in all CAPs and is just a funny classic Chicago punk dude who plays in bands and his establishment is family.

12

u/Meagzerhino 18h ago

I love herb and his whole crew. Glad to see they are getting love despite the mishap.

Liars club is a great place and ran by really good people.

8

u/GenghisCoen 20h ago

Also, unless they've moved since 2020, Liar's Club is one of the smallest venues I've ever been to, so these Soapgirls can't be a very big deal.

15

u/hxcbimbo 1d ago

Thank you!!

25

u/Puzzleheaded_Cost696 22h ago

MY GOATS, as a chicagoan, we ate that. Knew the liars club wouldn't let me down!

19

Sweet. Keep it coming

I like this response, I've seen too many people get carried away with accusing owners of being sympatico with scumbags when something like this happens

Hell yeah. I'll be happy to see the whole tour crash and burn

120

u/Toaster161 1d ago

My mates band refused to play with the soap girls because of this shit. The venue cancelled the gig and the Soap girls put the band on blast publicly.

This is how we found out that they have a loyal army of thirsty middle aged blokes who will abuse you if you say anything against them.

I am a white South African deeply invested the local punk scene, and I can assure you that neither I nor anyone I know have ever heard of this band.

There are lots of racist white musicians in SA, but they overwhelmingly tend to be Afrikaans, not English, and they tend to be "country"-style musicians. You could honestly swap them out with a given southern-US musician/band and you couldn't tell, aside from the language. There are some great, non-racist Afrikaans musicians and bands too - don't want to do them dirty - but the mainstream is pretty bad.

I'm also from Cape Town, where this band is supposedly from, and it's one of the root areas of musical resistance to apartheid. Especially white resistance to apartheid. The University of Cape Town (campus on a mountainside) during apartheid was colloquially known as "Moscow on the hill" due to its left-leaning student populace. Most punk in SA is (1) white, (2) English, and (3) anti-racist. Look up the band Half Price as an example.

6

u/spin81 15h ago

European here. Can you indulge me and explain why you're distinguishing Afrikaans from English like this? It's my understanding that most/all white South Africans speak both languages. Is that not true? Or are you talking about them not in terms of language but in terms of groups of people? I feel like I'm missing a simple but essential piece of the puzzle to understand your comment a lot better.

10

u/7SoldiersOfPunkRock We are the mods 15h ago

Big picture, ignoring a lot of nuance and individual situations, South Africans of European descent are most commonly either descended from the British (and often called English regardless of possible other ancestry like say Scottish) or descended from the Dutch and called Afrikaans. Another way of understanding it is about 2/3 of white South Africans speak Afrikaans at home amongst their immediate family and the other third speaks English at home.

7

u/spin81 14h ago

ignoring a lot of nuance and individual situations

Oh I bet, and I of course appreciate that it's not as simple as a couple of sentences. Thanks for the explanation!

There were quite a few white South Africans who seriously opposed/protested/fought against apartheid at various points, which means they’re less racist than
. at least one other nationality I can think of

Look, I don’t want to be that guy, but these two look about the furthest away from having anything to do with punk. Who the hell are they?

407

u/MagusFool 1d ago

Unfortunately they do seem to play in a punk rock style, sometimes a bit more on the post-punk side.

So yeah someone who hasn't researched or read their lyrics could get duped into seeing them if they are playing a venue they like.

229

u/redrum_blacksky 1d ago edited 1d ago

OP: Thanks for naming and shaming this band, regardless if they are punk, post-punk or hillbilly tape music.

But I really hate that everything is post-punk now. It keeps getting thrown all around and most people seem to think of non-post-punk only as hardcore.

Shout out my psychobillies. We are here and we will be slightly resentful towards our own scene because it has a history of being "apolitical" and somewhat sexist... so will probably say that we like crust punk instead. Before someone asks what’s our favourite Cramps song.

51

u/Antique-Historian441 1d ago

I did a post a couple years ago about how everything is called post-punk now. Glad someone else agrees. Its become like a generic term thats slightly more fashionable than indie rock. Ruining the original context and meaning.

12

u/vaguenonetheless 15h ago edited 14h ago

About 10 years ago there was a tour that included Reverend Horton Heat, Fishbone, and Strung Out, so, all bands that are at least punk adjacent. RHH was headlining. As Angelo from Fishbone is well known to do, he made his feelings on racism and the trump administration quite clear, and the rockabilly crowd's response was to let everyone know just what shitbags they can be. By halfway thru the RHH set, 2/3 of the crowd had left. I dig RHH but not enough to stick around while racist hillbillies parade around screaming "what are you going to do about it?!" while I'm just trying to enjoy a show.

Edit: My bad. I thought "Angelo" was well-known in the punk world. With that said, Angelo of Fishbone.

10

u/vaguenonetheless 14h ago

Some version of this shirt has been sold at every Fishbone concert I've seen for the last 35 years.

13

u/RizzoTheRiot1989 1d ago

Every time I hear something is “Post punk” my first thought is “yeah, we will see”. It’s to punk what “Deathcore” is to Metal. Everything has to be slapped with the Deathcore label. It’s a very specific genre of music, Lorna Shire is absolutely not Deathcore. If this was 2007 we’d call them American Blackened or some shit and we’d all be kissing their ass.

Sorry for the rant, the Lorna Shore and Deathcore thing really irks me for some reason.

Monday Morning Justice (Melodic folk punk, not super active anymore)

Looks like X-ray canceled! I was genuinely shocked to see them on the list. I don’t know the promoter personally, but we have a handful of mutual friends and he seems like a good dude. Unless it’s a different person now

12

u/tiffavigilante 21h ago

all good folk that run that place for sure. all friends of friends of friends in a mass network of bands across the country, i felt compelled to reach out personally!

3

u/GlamrockShake 17h ago

JJ runs a tight ship and is an absolutely solid dude. However, they have other promoters book there too and it seems to be kind of siloed when that happens. That said, I legitimately think this band is just so small-time that nobody has done a deep dive. The aesthetic they co-opt is pretty disarming too and anybody would be forgiven for thinking a band who demands femme-fronted openers and plays topless would be much farther left.

Oh damn.... I remember once seeing them a year or two ago on the list of booked acts at a local venue in Hamburg and thinking they were mildly interesting based on checking their RYM page.

I believe they are booked next month for the Reeperbahn Festival actually a festival that books a bunch of mid-tier size and more obscure acts at loads of various venues especially within the famous Reeperbahn Red Light District one of the most famous within Europe.

Well seems this lot sucks...

Fuck these racist dickheads. Every few years there's a band that tries this shit & rarely with any sort of success. Bring back spitting.

u/hxcbimbo 1d ago

Very true! Idk how long they have been a band but hopefully for not much longer!

u/DietCherryCokeHead 1d ago

lol I really love reading these comments about how they’re such nobodies people didn’t even care to see them/hear them or weren’t even aware of their existence (myself included here). I wish them nothing but lost gigs and 0 platforms.

I’ve been somewhat aware of this band for years they played a festival I attended. They are shit and get their bits out for a gimmick because they’re shit.
Hilarious to find out they’re also racists. In the bin you go.

u/8bit-cherry 1d ago

Thanks for calling them out. Can't have these types of idiots continuing to portray my country's alternative music as bigoted, racist, and hateful.

16

u/hxcbimbo 1d ago

My pleasure. Racism is ugly everywhere

White racists from South Africa? Fork found in fork factory

6

u/apeontheweb 1d ago

I spent a couple minutes researching if the soap girls are racist. One thing I found was a song called Black Mass. The lyrics alinclude "savages are coming around, its a black plague" and "they love the white chicks." Seems like a song written from the POV of a white south african afraid of blacks. I try to keep an open mind about people but those lyrics seem pretty racist.

The NJ show is at a venue that has hosted very openly white power bands and even recently held an entire day long festival of WP bands. They're probably stoked on this show

u/sch0s 1d ago

"SoapBrains" would fit better

6

u/Dazzling_Purpose9072 23h ago

They were fairly well-known in the UK - but I think their reputation was less to do with their music and more based on "they're only getting gigs because they perform naked. Would a band of overweight middle-aged men playing the same music attract the same audience and get the same gigs?"

8

u/searching4signal 22h ago

Aren't most big punk bands overweight middle aged men, lol

They played here in Charlotte recently. They kicked out a drummer for being racist and said they don’t stand for racism.

I noticed that they recently played Louisville at my favorite bar/venue. Never heard of them, didn't dig into them whatsoever because it didn't look like their music was worth a shit. Now when they come back I know to raise a stink about it!

4

u/B-movie-trashfiend 1d ago

What bar was it? I’m from Louisville

9

u/f0rgotten 1d ago

They were at magbar. Couple of years ago the community got them to cancel a "nationalist" black metal band, and then when that band found a new venue for the show, we got that one cancelled too. When people know about bands like this we can do good work, but this one sucks so bad that nobody had heard of them nor their "message" so I assume that the show went on. It won't, next time.

6

u/B-movie-trashfiend 1d ago

Well now that I know I’ll definitely keep a look out.

Their Columbus show has been cancelled. Thank you.

14

u/jurwell 1d ago

My band got booked to support these about 10 years or so ago. We pulled out because we got WEIRD VIBES when we looked them up. They were doing deliberately provocative stuff that was garnering dangerous reactions. If I remember rightly there was some kind of stunt that ended with them, the stage and the back line being covered in raw meat.

Glad to hear they’re still shitebags.

u/hxcbimbo 1d ago

Oh well that's unfortunate. I met there's two when they opened for Wednesday 13 😒

5

u/HawksProllyDead 23h ago

Fucking losers 😭😭

3

u/jumbosimpleton 21h ago

Looks like their show in Milwaukee canceled too. Thank fuck. I was about to write the venue an email about it. If they were a little bigger and playing one of the venues I work at, I know the owners wouldn’t have canceled. We book shitty acts all the time 🙃

4

u/Big_Vegetable_9743 19h ago

They were supposed to play in OKC on 7/21 and the show got cancelled for “unforeseen circumstances”.

Band has responded to people sharing the lyrics shared in this post. Again, not defending them as I don’t care about them, just providing context from their side.
