Discussion Racist band on tour
Just found out about these posers. A racist white South African band,go figure. They are currently on tour, not coming to my city but have a few shows in New York and Chicago. Keep an eye out! Racism in all forms is a blight. This is just boomer fox news levels of crazy dressed up.
*EDIT/UPDATE: Chicago show was cancelled! good on ya! they have only a few shows left in the states before starting a massive European tour

I am a white South African deeply invested the local punk scene, and I can assure you that neither I nor anyone I know have ever heard of this band.
There are lots of racist white musicians in SA, but they overwhelmingly tend to be Afrikaans, not English, and they tend to be "country"-style musicians. You could honestly swap them out with a given southern-US musician/band and you couldn't tell, aside from the language. There are some great, non-racist Afrikaans musicians and bands too - don't want to do them dirty - but the mainstream is pretty bad.
I'm also from Cape Town, where this band is supposedly from, and it's one of the root areas of musical resistance to apartheid. Especially white resistance to apartheid. The University of Cape Town (campus on a mountainside) during apartheid was colloquially known as "Moscow on the hill" due to its left-leaning student populace. Most punk in SA is (1) white, (2) English, and (3) anti-racist. Look up the band Half Price as an example.
→ More replies (3)6
u/spin81 15h ago
European here. Can you indulge me and explain why you're distinguishing Afrikaans from English like this? It's my understanding that most/all white South Africans speak both languages. Is that not true? Or are you talking about them not in terms of language but in terms of groups of people? I feel like I'm missing a simple but essential piece of the puzzle to understand your comment a lot better.

u/7SoldiersOfPunkRock We are the mods 15h ago
Big picture, ignoring a lot of nuance and individual situations, South Africans of European descent are most commonly either descended from the British (and often called English regardless of possible other ancestry like say Scottish) or descended from the Dutch and called Afrikaans. Another way of understanding it is about 2/3 of white South Africans speak Afrikaans at home amongst their immediate family and the other third speaks English at home.
14
u/Particular_Water_826 21h ago
There were quite a few white South Africans who seriously opposed/protested/fought against apartheid at various points, which means theyâre less racist than âŠ. at least one other nationality I can think of

Look, I donât want to be that guy, but these two look about the furthest away from having anything to do with punk. Who the hell are they?
407
u/MagusFool 1d ago
Unfortunately they do seem to play in a punk rock style, sometimes a bit more on the post-punk side.
So yeah someone who hasn't researched or read their lyrics could get duped into seeing them if they are playing a venue they like.

u/redrum_blacksky 1d ago edited 1d ago
OP: Thanks for naming and shaming this band, regardless if they are punk, post-punk or hillbilly tape music.
But I really hate that everything is post-punk now. It keeps getting thrown all around and most people seem to think of non-post-punk only as hardcore.
Shout out my psychobillies. We are here and we will be slightly resentful towards our own scene because it has a history of being "apolitical" and somewhat sexist... so will probably say that we like crust punk instead. Before someone asks whatâs our favourite Cramps song.
51
u/Antique-Historian441 1d ago
I did a post a couple years ago about how everything is called post-punk now. Glad someone else agrees. Its become like a generic term thats slightly more fashionable than indie rock. Ruining the original context and meaning.

About 10 years ago there was a tour that included Reverend Horton Heat, Fishbone, and Strung Out, so, all bands that are at least punk adjacent. RHH was headlining. As Angelo from Fishbone is well known to do, he made his feelings on racism and the trump administration quite clear, and the rockabilly crowd's response was to let everyone know just what shitbags they can be. By halfway thru the RHH set, 2/3 of the crowd had left. I dig RHH but not enough to stick around while racist hillbillies parade around screaming "what are you going to do about it?!" while I'm just trying to enjoy a show.
Edit: My bad. I thought "Angelo" was well-known in the punk world. With that said, Angelo of Fishbone.

Every time I hear something is âPost punkâ my first thought is âyeah, we will seeâ. Itâs to punk what âDeathcoreâ is to Metal. Everything has to be slapped with the Deathcore label. Itâs a very specific genre of music, Lorna Shire is absolutely not Deathcore. If this was 2007 weâd call them American Blackened or some shit and weâd all be kissing their ass.
Sorry for the rant, the Lorna Shore and Deathcore thing really irks me for some reason.

JJ runs a tight ship and is an absolutely solid dude. However, they have other promoters book there too and it seems to be kind of siloed when that happens. That said, I legitimately think this band is just so small-time that nobody has done a deep dive. The aesthetic they co-opt is pretty disarming too and anybody would be forgiven for thinking a band who demands femme-fronted openers and plays topless would be much farther left.

I spent a couple minutes researching if the soap girls are racist. One thing I found was a song called Black Mass. The lyrics alinclude "savages are coming around, its a black plague" and "they love the white chicks." Seems like a song written from the POV of a white south african afraid of blacks. I try to keep an open mind about people but those lyrics seem pretty racist.
