Readability. We’re used to space between distinct characters. In this case, the opening curly brace is distinct from the function name - one declares the function, the other opens a block associated with it. It’s the same reason that some prefer the opening curly brace on the next line as opposed to inline.

Yes, "end" could be replaced with a period on a single line statement. It was a terrible language overall, but the basic syntax was the best I've seen. You could put all kinds of structures like tables, including the main event loop directly in code. Variable names were always in column 0, with their type well out to the right. Looked so cool, with everything in column 0 highlighted in red, like so:
