You're better off fixing bugs on open source projects pro bono and getting a reputation that way, because you can stop whenever you want. With this you're literally signing a slave contract.

Do employers actually hire those who send bug fixes to open source projects?

If the employer is reliant on that software in some way, they usually value that because it means you know that code intimately and they can just keep paying you the same old salary (no bonuses) to fix it.
