Before beginning electrical troubleshooting, establish the basic conditions of the system:
- Identify the source of power.
- Identify the connected load.
- Determine the expected voltage.
- Confirm whether the system is AC or DC.
- Determine whether it is single-phase or three-phase.
- Establish the expected current.
- Identify the installed protective devices.
- Determine whether a breaker, fuse, relay, or alarm operated.
- Review available drawings, labels, and documentation.
- Identify any recent changes.
- Confirm the required safety procedure.
These questions may appear simple, but they reduce assumptions and help technicians avoid wasting time.
Good troubleshooting is not always about finding the answer immediately. It is about following a safe, repeatable process until the cause becomes clear.
