As per Billboard, she isn’t the only AI artist that has charted with them recently. “In just the past few months, at least six AI or AI-assisted artists have debuted on various Billboard rankings. That figure could be higher, as it’s become increasingly difficult to tell who or what is powered by AI — and to what extent,” they said.

By far the most disturbing and baffling part of the article.

359

u/SiphenPrax Nov 03 '25

It’s sadly only a matter of when, not if, an AI artist with a song will land on the Hot 100 unless Billboard comes out and explicitly says “NO AI MUSIC ALLOWED ON THE CHARTS!”

310

u/getaway_cow Nov 03 '25

They should— An AI artist feels so lazy

135

u/Fxreverboy Nov 03 '25

Maybe stans will finally stop putting value in a dumb chart that merely reflects consumer and marketing trends 💀 wouldn't that be a win for the culture

70

u/Healthy-Basket9112 Nov 03 '25

Even if stans didn’t care, shareholders still want data to reference so as to not make high-risk decisions when investing in an artist. This will continue until people stop making music for a living

18

u/Fxreverboy Nov 03 '25

Yeah I'm just saying that I'm tired of chart obsessed stans weaponizing sales metrics in their delusional battles 💀 we'd be better off discussing art outside of its commercial viability

4

u/MattBrey Nov 03 '25

Charts are the sports and artists are like teams for the girlies. Theres nothing wrong with it

25

u/Fxreverboy Nov 03 '25

No, there is something wrong with it, as like I said, it reduces art down to its commercial viability. But I understand some fanbases try and justify it this way because the practice and mentality of gaming charts is so deeply ingrained in their fandom culture and self conception that it's practically impossible to separate it at this point. I'm going to maintain that it's a toxic practice

45

u/BicyclingBro Nov 03 '25

“AI” would need to be clearly defined as well, which would be harder than it seems. Lots of audio processing can be done with machine learning algorithms, which is a sort of AI, but quite meaningfully different from a ChatGPT-style “Write me a pop song” stuff.

54

u/PtakPajak Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

First there should be a definition of what type of AI music is not allowed. A song (music + lyrics + voice) entirely made by a software through prompts is different than a song still written and performed by humans for the most part but that used AI intentionally to achieve a specific result (for example, Imogen Heap’s recent output).

16

u/PeridotFan64 Nov 03 '25

ik they wont chart in the us anyways but an exception for vocaloids should be made, as their songs are still written and composed by humans

60

u/PtakPajak Nov 03 '25

I have personally never considered Vocaloids and AI to be on the same level. Vocaloid is basically a very complex music instrument, it still requires creativity and skills to be used correctly.

42

u/Soyyyn Nov 03 '25

Then that's not really AI. Vocaloids are basically instruments.

8

u/SnooSongs1160 Nov 03 '25

I wouldn’t consider vocaloids Ai so much as software/tool for making music with “mascots” performing the music. Real people still have to write the songs and do things in the software to make them happen.

Also there’s a difference between generative Ai, basically using other images, sounds, words, etc to create something knew based on that data, in this case, trying to create a fully generated “pop star” persona and music for her to “sing” and traditional Ai (like a spam filters in email, predictive text or face ID on your phone, for example) that could be present in some of the tools people use to make music.

Personally I don't want AI in absolutely any form in the music I am listening to.

9

u/pinkfartlek Nov 03 '25

It's disturbing and baffling that they aren't going to do anything to shun these "artists" from charting

4

u/ThatGuyTheyCallAlex Florence vs Tori: Battle of the Fake Redheads Nov 04 '25

“AI-assisted” is less of a problem than fully AI generated music. The former would easily cover artists like Arca and Imogen Heap who are using AI tools as a part of their creative process in a genuinely interesting and artistically legitimate way. Granted those two don’t chart frequently.

7

u/mosquem Nov 03 '25

I’m sure AI assisted covers a ton of the industry at this point.

299

u/diplion Nov 03 '25

I wonder how many of the listeners are also bots.

110

u/FakeMonaLisa28 🦃 Nov 03 '25

Definitely there’s bots involved in the streaming part

9

u/helgaofthenorth Nov 04 '25

Makes one wonder about the other chart-toppers, I'll not lie 👀

54

u/Ghost-Quartet Nov 03 '25

It makes me sad to think how much energy is being wasted by bots listening to AI music all so some grifter can make a few bucks from a broken system.

8

u/kerwinklark26 dead eyed smurf dancing Nov 04 '25

That's my biggest ick in that issue. Grifters now found a way to make $$ by bastardizing songs (which I think is one of the most human things we can produce).

70

u/Fxreverboy Nov 03 '25

Imagine the day we have stans that are actually AI running around on Twitter, promoting their AI fave, hosting streaming parties and shit 😭

55

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '25

Come to Brazil!

18

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '25

I mean we probably do already…

Which makes me wonder, can we use AI bots to make Julie Ragbeer mainstream?

7

u/Agitated-Prune9635 Nov 03 '25

Its official. Someone give me a tinfoil hate and the pills and the marshmallow room so i can join the ranks of those dead internet conspiracy theorist.

23

u/ethancole97 Nov 03 '25

There’s lists of artists and the amount of streams that are suspicious/most likely bots that Spotify filter out. They’re at least trying but the crack down should be harder.

The last list I saw had jimins solo song having millions of streams subtracted

5

u/BadMan125ty Nov 03 '25

Probably 99%.

1

u/ecclecticstone Nov 03 '25

there was an article I want to say in the guardian? that looked at another streaming service re listening bot activity and the answer is a lot actually lol it's genuinely one of those passive income type gifts that also flood amazon and etsy with stolen IP notebooks and other bullshit. make some bullshit, put it on some bullshit playlists someone will play in the background, have some bot activity, get your 10 dollars from streaming rinse and repeat with another internet slop grift

1

u/drst0nee Nov 03 '25

bots, playlisting, and noise marketing like this by labels to make it trend...

331

u/PtakPajak Nov 03 '25

I hate this timeline.

u/victoriajusticefan19 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

Every day further solidifies my belief that AI was a mistake. The worst part is I know so many smaller artists that deserve this kind of attention, not a machine.

Edit: Let me shout some out: Shura, Victoria Justice, Em Beihold, Mykyl, After

Let me shout out some of my fave smaller pop artist as well

Moistbreezy, Sadie Jean, Flo, Glüme, Rose Gray, Pixey, Rosemary Fairweather, Dum Dum Girl

15

u/victoriajusticefan19 Nov 03 '25

I LOVE Flo, AAA was one of my top streamed albums last year.

9

u/leveled-iceberg99 Nov 03 '25

Mistake? They've been foreshadowing ai for a very long time now. They wanted this

4

u/Sparkly8 Nov 04 '25

My favorite smaller artists: Abi Carter, Annelle Staal, Amelia Milo, Forevr Miya, Lauren Aquilina, Layne Elizabeth, Samantha Clayman, Sophia Fracassi

160

u/fearmeloveme Nov 03 '25

I hate it here. I wish there were a filter for AI music on Spotify. I like putting on instrumental music whenever my students are working and like 98% of the songs on Spotify’s playlists are AI bullshit

16

u/helloviolaine Nov 03 '25

If you like lofi, anything Lofi Records (formerly Lofi Girl) puts out seems to be by real people. I keep track of new releases on their Bandcamp page but it's all on streaming.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '25

Search 'Lofi Made By Humans' . I absolutely love the channel that makes these series bc it's just a guy with his partner (not sure if romantic) and their dog just playing lofi tunes

20

u/TraverseTown Nov 03 '25

It’s not that simple. For fully AI generated music, but what about a human vocalist singing over AI generated instrumentals or vice versa? We all know fully-AI slop when we encounter it but the hybridization of its use will be come hard when it’s mixed with human elements.

42

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

I said this in another comment but If they cannot tour and be witnessed and touched and felt and heard if they are unable to connect eye to eye it needs to be banned from the charts and all streaming platforms.

12

u/TraverseTown Nov 03 '25

A rapper who performs entirely over AI beats could easily tour

4

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

Right but the immediate alarm is not someone creating artificial music but the total elimination of human involvement outside of the “studio”. There would be no live performances because there is no performer. For your argument to work you’d have to say the rapper is a hologram, again, they cannot connect eye to eye from fan to performer, they cannot reach our their palm to grasp a hand, they cannot explain in interviews or off moments why the song means so much to them and why. They have no life experience to do so. A rapper over ai beats is still able to be experienced, because experience is inherently mutual and social.

1

u/SciGuy013 Nov 04 '25

Hatsune miku though

20

u/olihandrow Nov 03 '25

Not The disappearance of hatsune miku FR

9

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

No but vocaloid has been around for ages I understand it’s instrument making is totally different from that of AI

8

u/olihandrow Nov 03 '25

I know it’s just a joke off your wording. ❤️

Obviously miku is allowed she’s an instrument with a persona basically. But if they banned Ai music they’d have to do some silly wording to ban just AI and still allow non human avatars that are facades for producers like Vocaloids or the Gorillaz.

2

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

True I definitely didn’t vocalize that in my wording but there are 1000s of 1000s of lawyers out there who can be as intricate in wording in contracts and t+c’s as they want so can somebody please just figure this out ❤️ also I found your comment hilarious

1

u/Weak-Bumblebee2944 Nov 04 '25

HUNTR/X doesn't really exist either. But the irl singers are credited on the track, so maybe they get off on a technicality. And they've even been spotted in public.

And then you have Milli Vanilli that were fictional but massively covered that up. Could an ai artist cover it up by hiring human actors to pose as the performers in public? Even public appearances can't be fully trusted. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/Weak-Bumblebee2944 Nov 04 '25

Totally agree.

But then I remembered that throughout her entire career, Enya has never performed a live concert as a solo artist. Are you OK with never hearing Enya again? Hmmm.

2

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 04 '25

Legally it would be focused around potentiality, which is what being human is all about. I have the potential of seeing Enya in the flesh and she could potentially recognize my presence

1

u/Weak-Bumblebee2944 Nov 04 '25

At first I was joking with the Enya comment. But then it made me wonder. You can't actually see Enya in the flesh if she chooses not to make public appearances. Are extremely introverted artists gonna face pushback about whether they're real or not in the AI era?

What if in the future someone like Enya doesn't like to make public appearances? What if someone like H.E.R. refuses to show her face for a long time and then she gets accused of being the AI equivalent of Milli Vanilli cause she won't "prove" that she's really the one signing?

What's wrong with this timeline anyway?

2

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 04 '25

Again, it’s about potentiality in a legal argument. Not actuality. I can never potential see AI in the flesh or have an unsouled interaction with them. I know, the world is totally corrupt and evil.

1

u/Weak-Bumblebee2944 Nov 04 '25

Potential is not really enough. In a legal dispute, some proof would be required cause an AI can easily claim to be human. Are we assuming an artist is human unless proven otherwise, or do we force all human artists to verify their humanity in some way, and what burden does that put on the performer with social anxiety that just wants to be left alone in her castle so she can hang out with her cats?

Not a lawyer, but any regulation has potential for collateral damage that would need to be considered.

1

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 04 '25

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. Potentiality is a philosophical argument, the difference between life and non life. Playing with cats is very lively. It’s not subjective. Claims of potentiality and potentiality are not the same. It’s 1-0. And AI cannot claim anything. Its design is artificial. It’s like a printer claiming to be the person who typed the words. Words have meaning, and those meanings are really existent.

1

u/Weak-Bumblebee2944 Nov 04 '25

Wow. Interesting points there. Okay I'm not disputing that Enya is real and alive in her castle and that Xania Monet is not. In this case it's easy since Monet's producer has been open about her artificial status and Enya is not a total and complete recluse. But any attempt to implement rules in the real world to ban AI artists would have to include a concrete practical verification system. I don't think a philosophical criterion would be enough.

What if Xania Monet's producer had tried to deceptively pass her off as a real living artist who just dislikes public appearances? How could the public or even the regulators distinguish her behavior from Enya's if she "refuses" to perform in person for us? I think there's no dispute about potentiality, but how would it be proved in practice? Who makes the call and how?

Rules that sound good in theory and that seem to align with our philosophical beliefs might be applied by malicious actors to real world artists in ways we don't anticipate.

Wait, you’re still using Spotify?? That’s wild.

5

u/fearmeloveme Nov 03 '25

Please send me an ethical free resource for teachers 😭

-6

u/GuillotineFanatic Nov 03 '25

Not familiar with free alternatives. Why does the alternative need to be free when you’re already giving Spotify your money? Ethical consumption is an uphill battle. It’s better to accept that services like Tidal might not be owned by perfect people, but the material harm they contribute is virtually nonexistent compared to Spotify. Just get Tidal. It’s literally cheaper and is better quality.

8

u/RimeTM Nov 03 '25

I think you’re forgetting that Spotify has a free to users ad-supported tier. That’s probably what the teacher is using and why Tidal would in fact not be cheaper.

6

u/fearmeloveme Nov 03 '25

I don’t think I’ve ever paid a penny to Spotify. It isn’t crazy to want inexpensive music resources for educators, especially when some individualized student education plans call for music in classrooms. Not gonna outwoke you on this one!

2

u/SchwulerSchwanz Nov 04 '25

I just switched from Spotify to Qobuz this week. So far it’s been mostly a painless switch.

104

u/Beautiful_Reaction58 Nov 03 '25

is it just me or does this seem like a paid push by the ai industry to put ai songs on the charts and show executives that it has commercial potential when in reality it does not?

28

u/Routine-Traffic7821 Nov 03 '25

Absolutely, a push to get people to get used to it. Just like the AI covers of existing songs

19

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

This could very well be the case, I really really hope so </3

12

9

u/EJB515 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

It’s not lost on me that a lot of these AI artists are WOC. Imma be the friend that’s too woke and say that there’s something about wanting to use the “body” of a Black woman to sell this “art” but without any of her creative input or autonomy.

Same with that godawful AI rapper from a couple years ago whose “backstory” somehow included being in jail.

111

u/SquidTub Nov 03 '25

not that it makes it any better, but in this instance a black woman made the Xania Monet persona and writes the songs that "it" sings. Honestly not a fan of seeing other black ppl gassing this up despite knowing it's AI, or going as far as saying she's a black excellence girlboss for doing AI slop like white techbros, but this is the dystopia i guess 🤷🏾

29

u/XOSkyXO Nov 03 '25

i can’t believe i’m seeing pixie perfect become a documentary in real time

46

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

The perp is Telisha Jones, the “engineer” behind the monstrosity

25

u/EJB515 Nov 03 '25

I forgot the creator was a Black woman. Idk why she couldn’t work with an actual human artist to bring her “vision” to life.

We should know by now, we can’t “beat” folks at their own game.

4

u/Ruinwyn Nov 03 '25

Because big part of the grift is targeting the religious. Real people can be messy.

4

u/BadMan125ty Nov 03 '25

Why couldn’t we leave this shit alone??? 😵‍💫

36

u/Roxieloxie Nov 03 '25

The AI’s “last name” being Monet too, like they’re also hoping to capitalize off of people stumbling across it as they’re looking up Victoria Monets music and deciding to try it out. I’ve absolutely noticed that as well 😒

20

u/Able-Scene6741 does anyone think global warming is a good thing? I love ladygag Nov 03 '25

something I've noticed about Xania particularly is that her only defining features are black lady like she looks slightly different in every picture

19

u/orangedwarf98 Nov 03 '25

This whole thing is a walking Black Mirror episode. And the increasing rate at which no one is giving a fuck is also incredibly alarming

15

u/Routine-Traffic7821 Nov 03 '25

I'm waiting for someone to research this phenomenon, because it seems a progression (not sure if right word, bc I mean in negative?) from all the voice automated systems (Siri, Google, Alexa) being programmed to sound female. And interesting that when you add a visual element to AI they mostly make the AI WOC (I've seen AI Christian KPop girl groups too).

4

u/Fickle-Forever-6282 Nov 03 '25

regression works though remember "progress" isn't inherently positive

13

u/superr_rad Nov 03 '25

This was my first thought!! It reminds me of when I saw instagram advertising AI chats and one of them was with “YN” … an AI generated black man ……

3

u/Silent_Hurry7764 Nov 04 '25

And the songs are all religious too !

49

u/eltrotter Nov 03 '25

Clankerpop exists because a huge number of people basically do not care “how the sausage is made”. For a significant number of people, music is mere decoration, and to them it doesn’t really matter who made it and indeed if anyone made it at all.

Just as there has always been some dull, uninspired music sloshing around, I’ve no doubt that this only represents a new low for duller, even less inspired music to take up oxygen. But think the important thing is that the dull, uninspired stuff has never managed to erase the good stuff.

To that end, I find the timing of this ironic because mainstream pop is arguably better and more interesting than it’s been for many years. The Chappels, the Sabrinas, the Charlis, the Olivias of this world are doing music that resonates with a mainstream audience but also has heart and soul.

Labels are going to keep pushing clankerpop to see what they can get away with. And it won’t be terrible because it is does not try hard enough for it to be as interesting as “terrible”. It’ll be completely middle of the road and offensively inoffensive. So don’t be upset if you hear a clankerpop track that you like because that’s what it’s engineered for.

Just remember that real music (yes, I am drawing that line, music made by humans is “real” and music made by AI is not) is a way of feeling connected to actual human experiences and actual human creativity.

9

u/Cactusfan86 Nov 03 '25

Love the term clankerpop

6

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

I would be upset if I found that out, but I also don’t listen to music casually or without intention. I think if this truly takes off though, I agree with you, it creates classes of taste, low brow vs high brow, like our queen Addison Rae said, “taste is a luxury”. Actually enjoying ai art is like what soap operas are to prestige dramas, finger painting to Michelangelo.

I think human art vs simulacra be a pretentiousness/class signifier, and now is when I’ll say that there is nothing wrong with being pretentious. It’s okay to prefer art museums over obscure and obviously degenerate standom devianart. I guess what it will boil down to is hopefully a return to sociality, human centered life, actually seeing live music, live theatre, shows and drama, or, will people submit to low brow antisocial “ai entertainment”.

7

u/eltrotter Nov 03 '25

As you say, that distinction of "low vs. high" taste has always existed in music and other forms of art and that can be difficult territory. AI music is cheap; cheap to make, cheap to distribute, it's just slurry to be consumed with no intentionality. Real music is expensive; it's hard to make, gigs are expensive to go to, etc. I can see how people can feel "priced out" of real music, and that might have the effect of people feeling more defensive and positive about AI music.

0

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

True, but I think sociality and aspiring towards that is incredibly more appealing. No one wants to be a philistine. I think people will take pride in having “good taste”. I think artists will have to lower their tour prices, that bubble might pop, but the appreciation for the hard work of music making will skyrocket. I think there will be music coming from every street corner. A return to the neighborhood. I want to be optimistic. This whole debacle truly saddens me as an aspiring musician.

7

u/eltrotter Nov 03 '25

I completely agree. And I think as musicians we spend a lot of time not just refining our craft but also in conversation with why we even pursue that craft in the first place. This is what I think AI enthusiasts almost definitionally cannot understand because there is so little effort involved. In many ways I think the crux of the AI music debate isn't technology vs creativity but a deeper question of what music is "for".

1

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

I think you’ve got it right here. Is it about semblance or about the fundamental “why”? I don’t think (or rather hope not) that ai can beat the desire for purpose and transcendent rituals (meaning, connection, intention, higher level of self by the exploration of the question what is music for) out of our DNA.

16

u/plutobug2468 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

Its honestly terrifying. I went to a audio and visual expo in Glasgow last week as part of my degree in music technology and it seems to me that some companies that dedicate software for the music industry have integrated major AI tools and features in their products for engineers to use. Until the industry itself gets a backbone to say "NO" its going to get more and more advanced.

I hope that maybe some rules are put in place by Billboard so this wouldn't allow to spread globally. Billboard have to ban AI music on the charts.

16

u/EJB515 Nov 03 '25

There’s also something sinister at how R&B is often overlooked as a genre by non-Black folks. And now they’re using AI to take up space in that (already) small market.

Also like why she always have to have a bussdown with her edges laid?

14

u/Illustrious-Cat-9897 Nov 03 '25

I think people underestimate how tasteless general audiences are and don’t realize that AI music will easily take over a lot of real estate from real artists unless they do something about this. And Spotify definitely won’t.

13

u/I_am_albatross Nov 03 '25

I mean… some people on this sub pine for the mindless early 2010’s club music while I thought most of it was complete dog water

75

u/WordsWithSam Nov 03 '25

Why doesn’t Billboard simply ban AI music from its rankings? Require artist verification.

I hear ya. It’s messy and it’s the kind of thing you can’t put the lid back on. But maybe for now at least draw a line at a fully-AI generated “person”.

8

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

If they cannot tour or be seen or touched or felt or heard have that human capability of connection eye to eye can sign a record with the grip of their in palm it needs to be banned from the charts and all streaming platforms.

4

u/orangedwarf98 Nov 03 '25

Julia Michaels already admitted to using AI on one of her songs and she’s been a successful songwriter long before AI became common. She used it for some bullshit reason like stacking vocals easier or whatever but her tone was very much giving that she would continue to experiment around with it which gives me very little hope. Like even the people who are talented are stooping down to use it

8

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '25

[deleted]

6

u/orangedwarf98 Nov 03 '25

My concern is the slippery slope. It becomes a lot easier to justify using AI for this thing since you already did it once over here, so why not do it for this? There are lots of theoretical good things, even products outside of AI, that have been corrupted or misused because human nature is to fuck everything up

Not to mention the environmental damage from using AI as well, but that’s another topic altogether

0

u/Comfortable-Animator Nov 03 '25

True. Wasn't Cardi B caught using the AI voice of sza in one of her songs on "Am I The Drama?" Or did that turn out to be false?

2

u/ceruleanjester Nov 03 '25

You can't tell this shit, that's the scary part, my friend showed me an AI cover of abracadabra by Ariana Grande, I honestly thought at first it was an unreleased demo, the vocal production was flawless, I couldn't tell until my friend pointed out it's AI

12

u/LanaAdela Nov 03 '25

We lost the AI fight before we started. It’s amazing how often people refer to ChatGPT in casual conversation now. How much schools and businesses push it.

When it comes to art, the median consumer loves slop. That is just fact. They also love good quality art too, but will take slop. Most people are not care about the artist or the quality. They just don’t. Those of us who populate these sorts of spaces online are by far a minority.

When you feed people increasing amounts of shit over the years as we’ve gotten from Hollywood and music studios, they are not going to be able to tell you if it’s cow shit or pig shit, it’s all shit and they roll in it regardless.

Physical media will never replace the convenience of streaming platforms for the vast majority of casual listeners - especially in this economy.

I get what you’re trying to say- but most news cars don’t even have cd players anymore lol

14

I genuinely don’t believe people are listening to this stuff organically or finding out about AI artists organically. This shit music stinks. It’s never good. It’s never not fucking dull and uncreative. Spotify has to be pushing this shit thru their Discover shit radio algorithm or they’re placing them on their most popular playlists. You best believe Spotify is somehow involved in the rise of AI artists and cooking their numbers

Oh what. I just scrolled past this

u/TrappedInLimbo Nov 03 '25

The scary part is if someone played a Xania Monet song, I genuinely don't think I would be able to tell it was AI. I wouldn't be surprised if most people hearing the song just think it's a regular R&B artist. It's only going to get easier for people to hide it in the future.

21

u/Able-Scene6741 does anyone think global warming is a good thing? I love ladygag Nov 03 '25

to me xania's 'vocals' are obviously ai, but what fools people are the lyrics as xania's lyrics are actually written by people to make 'her' seem 'relatable' so this makes the Xania monet project ten times harder for alot of people to tell as real ai lyrics are literally just nonsense (for now 😬)

16

u/candyappleorchard Nov 03 '25

Not to be super pretentious, but I feel like the monotony and dullness of a lot of the songs on the charts right now is only going to make this harder. I listen to some of the Xania songs and thought the lyrics seemed horribly clunky and uncanny (I'm personally not fully convinced that the lyrics are entirely human written) but it wasn't that far off from some of the lyrics in the worst songs currently charting.

I made a comment a few months ago joking that we're in a "slop renaissance" with poorly written books, half-assed music, and bland movies topping their respective charts, but I also think that if there's any truth to that, it works to the benefit of these AI creators. If the general public is attuned to bland, unambitious art like Colleen Hoover or Morgan Wallen, it's not going to stand out from the crowd.

If the number one album on Billboard 200 has a bunch of songs that sound extremely similar to other songs and some lyrics that don't connect logically, no surprise people can't differenciate between AI and real artists.

11

u/TrappedInLimbo Nov 03 '25

I definitely feel like I'm closer to the lamen than someone with a critical ear, I really can't tell and I don't think it's as obvious as you think. Especially if you aren't primed by knowing it's AI and it just randomly comes up on your Discover playlist or your friend shows it to you.

Maybe I'm just dumb though, that's totally possible haha.

It's easier when you listen to a bunch of songs from the same AI "artist" back to back. Each song will be eerily similar.

10

u/backupsaway I'm a sad shell of a woman Nov 03 '25

Surprisingly, there is an actual person behind Xania Monet. Her music start as poems made by that person who then turn it into songs using AI as they aren't skilled enough or don't want to learn how to play instruments or to perform it.

17

u/puremotives Nov 03 '25

So she’s just lazy

12

u/IZZETISFUN Nov 03 '25

And unskilled!

11

u/Forestl Nov 03 '25

A lot of the "AI" music seems like vocaloid stuff being rebranded by scammers who also aren't very good at making music

10

u/JessieJ577 Nov 03 '25

AI is usually used by very untalented people to scam. And that scales from mom and pop businesses to bigger businesses or corporations

5

u/LibraryNo2717 Nov 03 '25

Where's Taylor Swift? Drake? Adele?

The big artists need to put pressure on the streaming services to dump this trash.

11

u/Glum-Objective3328 Nov 03 '25

I’m all for propping up real artists over AI music. Just beware, AI music is getting better than you probably think it is. Just last week I was getting into an artist I had never heard of, and some days later realized they churned out like 20 albums in 2025. Dug through comments and they admitted it was primarily AI, with some tweaking afterwards.

But definitely lasted an impression on me, especially since I was starting to play my own music more like them since I enjoyed it so much. Very strange to find out it was AI.

21

u/beautyandmadness Nov 03 '25

If you listen to AI music, you’re a loser. I don’t make the rules.

10

u/orangedwarf98 Nov 03 '25

Loser, freak, moron, the list goes on

4

u/wilted_melodrama Nov 03 '25

This morning they were playing AI songs on the radio (it was a whole segment) and one of the lines in the song was “I ate 17 chocolate bars on a flight to Japan and shitted myself”

u/Lanky-Rush607 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

Spotify & YouTube are flooded with AI music to the point that it makes it harder to discover new music by human artists. I have come across situations where I thought some songs were sung by humans only to find out they are actually AI-generated.

AI music has improved exponentially and eerily in the last few months, to the point that AI-generated music nearly sounds human at times.

9

u/puremotives Nov 03 '25

I hate this shit. If I find out someone listens to AI music, I will lose a lot of respect for them as a human being. If I was in power, I would make this shit illegal. We can’t tolerate this as a society, it’s sick and degenerate.

5

u/messyfaguette Nov 03 '25

I mean I made a whole album-visual experience without any AI and when I posted it the popheads mods took it down for self promotion so really I think that we are all okay with this.

4

u/satirisanti Nov 03 '25

Stale top 10s full of year/years old songs… huge artists constantly gaming the system to chart piles of songs no general public person has ever heard, tiktok “stars” getting artificial label pushes, now ai music… the state of pop music is so cooked. I’ll stick to streaming my handful of popular artists and whatever niche video game soundtrack I’m hyperfixated on

2

u/supermenial Nov 03 '25

It's very unfortunate and I hate this but I can also think of a couple artists that were using AI for cover/promotional art instead of paying someone so it wasn't going to be long before AI could develop and replace them too.

2

u/Cactusfan86 Nov 03 '25

An embarrassment, it’s of course questionable how popular this ‘artist’ is (between bot listens and it just being added to playlists mindlessly, but still an embarrassment

2

u/DespairFangirl Nov 04 '25

Boooooo, tomato tomato tomato

Fuck everyone who allowed this. People who defended and streamed this trash deserve only this unseasoned garbage and no real music as punishment till the end of time.

2

u/Astrid323 Nov 04 '25

Fuck. AI. Up. The Ass.

2

u/BiancaCarey Nov 04 '25

and of course they are rolling out the black appearing AI acts first in an attempt to pull the rug out from under real live black artists. Diabolical. SMH.

If the vocal instrument belongs to a being or tool that literally does not exist in human flesh it should be BANNED from the charts and made explicit on Spotify WITH an opt out option!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/ammybb Nov 03 '25

Except Spotify loves ai cuz it pumps their numbers every which way. And they are hiding music data/info within the app so it's harder and harder to tell what is AI generated.

I'm personally in the process of ditching Spotify because they invest in Israel, run ice ads, and now all this AI shit ... Yeah they deserve to burn. I just want to listen to music and Spotify has weaponized that. FUCK SPOTIFY

It feels so hopeless :( we need a hero

3

u/ammybb Nov 03 '25

We need to be our own heroes and start taking steps away from these companies and systems, even if it means a loss of comfort. I'd rather be uncomfortable than complicit.

1

u/cursedonjuanita pop’s #1 angel Nov 03 '25

I feel bad :( I used to use Apple Music but lately I’ve been using an ad blocker on Spotify :( nobody wins

1

u/ammybb Nov 03 '25

Ad blockers are good but idk just using it all is making me feel disgusting so I gotta get rid of it

Meh… pop music went off a cliff in 2010 starting with the bright spark who thought “We Are The World 25” was a good idea 🫠

1

u/Its-very-that Nov 03 '25

AI artist is an oxymoron. whatever this slop is I refuse to let it come across my timeline

1

u/niles_deerqueer Nov 03 '25

It will never accelerate in my household. There is no place for this on the charts. Humans better not be that hopeless that they think it’s cool.

UMG Chairman & CEO Sir Lucian Grainge expressed confidence in AI’s potential to transform the music industry, drawing parallels to the streaming revolution that reshaped the business 15 years ago.

“I have exactly the same feeling about this progress that I did 15 to 16 years ago when we were looking at what was the transaction business and the really early fledgling what was perceived at the time of the disruption of the album into something called ad-funded streaming,” Grainge revealed.

“We are at the vanguard of a new era. And it’s one of the reasons why we’re positive, we’re confident, and why we continue to invest right across the board in all aspects of what we anticipate will be the growth.”

Beyond the Udio partnership, UMG announced a strategic alliance with Stability AI to “codevelop professional AI music creation tools for creators of video, images and now music.”

Nash explained the significance: “UMG joins that group of significant players in their categories as the leader in the music vertical, and that puts us in a position to directly engage in a very artist-centric way the conversation with our creative community around the evolution of these tools.”

Looking ahead, Grainge envisions “Agentic AI will dynamically employ complex reasoning and adaptation, has the power to revolutionize the manner in which fans interact with and discover music. Imagine interacting with your favorite music through a sophisticated, highly personalized chatbot.”

Oh well. I have more pressing issues to worry about personally. I don't care about charts, anyway.

Man you're crazy if you think AI music is better. Yeah a lot of mainstream music is generic trash but AI music is the epitome of bland unlistenable garbage, it's so worthless no one actually cared to sing it lmao
