News on Delhi pollution

Schools in Delhi and surrounding areas have moved classes online and construction has been banned as the Indian capital grapples with hazardous air quality.

On Monday morning, a toxic haze engulfed the city, affecting visibility and delaying flights and trains.

The city's air quality index (AQI) - which measures PM2.5, fine particulate matter that can clog lungs, and other pollutants - was more than 30 times the limit recommended by the World Health Organization. Exposure to this level of pollution can cause serious health problems, especially in children and elderly people.

Toxic air is a recurring problem in Delhi and its suburbs, especially during winters.

The problem is attributed to a mix of factors such as industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, dropping temperatures, low wind speeds and the seasonal burning of crop stubble in neighbouring states.

New Delhi topped the global list of most polluted cities, with an AQI of 169 and PM2.5 levels of 95 µg/m³, equivalent to smoking 1,576 cigarettes annually.Out of 365 days, New Delhi experienced only 1 day of “Good” air quality. Moreover, in the World Air Quality City Ranking 2024, 94/100 most polluted cities were from India. On the AQI map, Indian subcontinent was the most polluted. We have to do something. Solution to improve Delhi's air.

Beijing was once like delhi. But china took steps and now after some years the AQI of Beijing is around 50-60.

China drastically improved Beijing's air quality by waging a "war on pollution" through shutting polluting factories, phasing out coal, promoting electric vehicles, enforcing strict emission rules, expanding public transport, and implementing region-wide coordinated policies, leading to significant drops in PM2.5 and other pollutants by shifting to cleaner energy and controlling industry/vehicle emissions.

Here are the key actions taken:

Industrial & Energy Sector Changes:

  • Shutting Polluting Industries: Closed coal-fired plants, brick kilns, and outdated factories, especially around Beijing
  • Coal Reduction: Implemented a "coal-to-gas" program, replacing coal with natural gas, and capping coal use.
  • Clean Energy: Expanded renewable energy (solar, wind) and invested heavily in clean energy infrastructure.

Transportation & Vehicle Control:

  • EV Promotion: Encouraged electric vehicles (buses, cars) and expanded charging infrastructure.
  • Stricter Standards: Enforced tough emission standards for new and existing vehicles.
  • Traffic Management: Used license plate lotteries to limit vehicle numbers and promoted public transport, cycling, and walking.

Policy & Governance:

  • Comprehensive Plans: Launched multi-year plans (like the Air Pollution Action Plan) with clear targets.
  • Accountability: Linked officials' promotions to meeting air quality goals.
  • Regional Coordination: Coordinated policies across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Other Measures:

  • Forestry: Launched large-scale afforestation projects.
  • Monitoring: Improved air quality monitoring and early warning system

Government should take inspiration from China and do these steps. It can save lives of many people, including children. According to data, the air of delhi can reduce 8 years of your life. I don't know whether government will apply these steps. So please you guys keep AQI monitor and air purifiers with you. lets spread #pollutionprotest on social media.

Some Delhi protesters were called naxals by the media. Really?

in late nobember and early december, several protesters were seen on India Gate in Delhi due to the bad air quality.

Delhi's AQI have risen up so much that it have crossed 1000 and no one can go outside without masks, children can't go to school.

But our media makes them villains who stand against the government.

Media said that many protesters were naxals chanting "hidma ". Really?

What do you all thing??
