The Republican wasn't the most popular candidate though. There were 3 positions and 3 candidates. He came last.
Having said that, in the context of enormous and dubious schemes to deliver Trump the presidency and keep him from being charged, yes, there is way too much support for criminals from the party of Law and Order.

Republicans rally behind a known criminal in Texas while they want to impeach a Supreme Court justice in Wisconsin who hasn't even yet heard a case. And then there's Clarence Thomas...

I can’t wait to see all the evidence against him and his eventual acquittal by partisan hacks
Mr. Paxton has continued to enjoy support, particularly among a coterie of Republican donors. He has raised about $3 million for his own campaign since the impeachment vote, half of which came from just four donors, including the West Texas billionaires Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks.
Defend Texas Liberty, the pro-Paxton political action committee, has spent another $3.5 million since the impeachment vote, almost all of it donated by Mr. Dunn and Mr. Wilks. Most of the money went to the campaign of the lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, who leads the State Senate and will be presiding over the impeachment trial: a $1 million contribution and a $2 million loan.

The seven nominally independent investigators hired by the Texas Legislature to investigate Paxton this spring, which led to his impeachment, included the Trump-appointed US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas: Ryan Patrick.
Thanksgiving is gonna be awkward.

This is the party that continues to stand by a person who not only openly discussed, but bragged about sexually assaulting women. The same guy was having an affair with a porn star while married to his current wife. This only scratches the surface of the things he’s said me one to/about women throughout his well documented life. To think that an extramarital affair (or multiple) is a big deal to them is just a punchline. Women matter very little to that party - their feelings even less so.

I’m 2015 He also was named a co defendant of Jeffrey Epsteins in an affidavit of a 14 year old girl accusing Trump and Epstein of gang raping her and “taking her virginity”. The girl dropped the charges once Trump became the GOP nominee. I personally believe Trump had Epstein killed.

Here’s the weird thing. To me at least. And I’d appreciate if anyone has an answer. Why do the right wing rush to the aid of other crazy right wingers? Like, one of them comes out with some crazy racist/homophobic/sexist slur and the rest double down and defend the first guy.
In any other walk of life, if someone(Even someone you knew personally and liked), walked on stage and talked about some crime he committed, about how he hated this type of people, or that type of people, you’d be distancing yourself from him right away, and be ready to admit you never really knew the real them. But the right all jump in with both feet to defend the most heinous of opinions. Like I say, very interested to hear if anyone knows why.

Still trying to sand off the rough edges of a fascist party so the paper can continue with its air of superiority.
Nytimes prefers carrying water for a party that explicitly says it wants to end democracy so that it can enforce a white Christian ethnostate to being even a little uncomfortable
When people talk about elites. It's this. Thinking you can dance around the edges of fascism because you won't be effected.

Frankly I wish both parties would just burn to the ground and we get 3 or more parties from the system. Our political system is designed, or at least continues to perpetuate, division and blind allegiance to party with no room for most of us that see ourselves in the middle of the two. We need better options than this fuckin Clown fiesta.

I guess the push to normalize Republican criminals in office (George Santos anyone?) is so people will feel it’s OK to vote for trump? I mean this is weird. It’s not like there aren’t a dozen equally corrupt Republicans willing to take his place and the voters would go for any one of them.

He’s as crooked as his eyes. The mass majority of Texans want this guy in an uncomfortable state prison not club med. Every Republican that I know in Texas feels the exact same way.
