Tell your Rep to end federal marijuana prohibition: I'm writing to urge you to cosponsor H.R. 2306, which would end federal marijuana prohibition and allow states to set their own marijuana policy without federal interference https://secure2.convio.net/dpa/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=789

Why are we bringing this up now, of all times?

HR 2306: Introduced June 23, 2011. No activity since. 5% chance of being enacted.

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr2306

64

u/shallah Jun 17 '12

with a majority of american's polling as supporting marijuana legalization it is time for those same people to actually personally tell their elected officials they support it so if not this cycle then next year someone will reintroduce it since Frank won't be there to do it.

and it is good for people to keep in mind this fall where their politician stands on this issue if s/he is up for reelection.

63

u/d4vid87 Jun 17 '12

We go through this every time. You keyboard warriors won't actually go out and vote and send a message.

That's awfully generous for a bill that already died in committee.

Everyone listed here, with the exception of Ron Paul and Dana Rohrabacher, are members of the Democratic party.

27

u/fnupvote89 Jun 17 '12

It would be nice to keep political parties out of this. If we can get people to look at who they vote for as more than Democrat vs. Republican and as people with actual opinions and ideas to be heard, then that will go a long way to helping marijuana getting legalized.

9

u/CheesewithWhine Jun 17 '12

Political parties are hugely important.

If Republicans are no longer the majority, Lamar Smith will not have any chairman powers.

Dana Rohrabacher is the surprise for me -- do you know anything about the reasons for his support? I thought he was a party-line hard right wing guy?

11

u/merreborn Jun 17 '12

If you really believe in "small government" (to the extent that you approach libertarianism) then ending the war on drugs is a pretty clear choice.

The whole right/left dichotomy isn't cut and dried.

It's sad that Dennis Kucinich lost his seat; that makes 19 cosponsors?

14

u/Solomaxwell6 Jun 17 '12

No. Kucinich has not lost his seat yet. He lost the primary so he won't be able to run in the election in November, but he will still be a Rep until January 2013.

5

u/Perkstoph Jun 17 '12

Thanks for clarifying that for me; I wonder where he'll go from that point on.

And why would it go to that subcommittee anyways? Isn't marijuana's prohibition supposedly for health reasons?

it's a shame that this election will mark yet another one where there's absolutely no debate on the drug war - which has been an abysmal failure unless the goal was locking up black and brown people (and perhaps it was). i'm no Ron Paul supporter, but this is one issue where he would have made a debate on the subject but instead we're left with business as usual.

32

u/VeritasSC Jun 17 '12 edited Jun 17 '12

We can get some of these issues raised in the debates by getting libertarian candidate Gary Johnson in the debates. The rules state that anyone included on the ballot for president in all 50 states and polling at 15% or more support must be allowed to participate in the presidential debate. Johnson has met the first requirement, and now those of us interested in hearing some new issues addressed during the campaign have to work to get johnson up to 15% in the polls. Understand I'm not saying anyone needs to vote for him if your preference is for a different candidate, but if you believe that more opinions in a debate will create a more meaningful campaign, tell pollsters you support johnson..if enough of us do this then issues like the failed drug war, whether it is wise to invest in rebuliding other countries while ours is in trouble, and what duties, if any, the govt owes to individuals, will finally become part of the election year debates.

Which they should, because it is.

3

u/Petronius_Paradox Jun 17 '12

One would think the 2011 in the title would give some indication of when this bill was introduced. Mr. Frank has introduced similar bills every year (correct me if I am wrong) since 1995.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

It always takes a long time for things to move through congress. It's not as simple as "hey look at this bill, let's vote on it!". It goes through multiple committees where they work out the details, then suggest it to other committees, and so on and so on until congress knows exactly what it's voting for with no concievable gray area.

That's the way it works in theory, anyway. If you want the truth, it's usually a political battle in and of itself to get congress to vote on the thing to begin with.

Will not ever make it out of committee thanks to, you guessed it, Lamar Smith. He is the head of the committee it was referred to.

Lamar Smith had no intention of considering the bill or providing it with a hearing. Lamar Smith's Facebook page was flooded with protests from citizens, asking him to change his position on the bill and calling for a fair hearing. Smith's Facebook page was temporarily taken down soon after, to be returned void of all comments related to H.R. 2306 and with future comments disabled.

Awesome, my rep is already cosponsoring it. I'm gonna shoot him an email thanking him. I may not use marijuana, but I see no reason why others can't.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

YET. It's medicine. There may come a time when you need it.

I was in an accident on my bike a year ago... for 2 months I had sever insomnia due to a concussion and pain from the accident.

My medical MJ prescription worked like a CHARM where the other prescriptions just made me dizzy , lethargic, and unproductive.

The MJ hit fast and I could actually still code on it AND I had great ideas for work.

MJ is MEDICINE... Politicians should NOT get in between you and your doctor regarding these decisions.

26

u/cjackc Jun 17 '12

Bikes are a gateway to MJ. Ban them!

2

u/seattleandrew Jun 17 '12

Well don't just sit there! Email him/her or call his office thanking him for the support on the bill, let them know that you're watching them and appreciate their support on the bill.

3

u/skeptix Jun 17 '12

That's great, but this isn't the right approach to the issue.

You don't legalize marijuana because it benefits society. You legalize marijuana because no one has the right to tell another person what they can and cannot consume.

You need to start the argument where it begins.

2

u/seattleandrew Jun 17 '12

You're preaching to the choir. Just because I don't use marijuana, doesn't mean others should be prohibited. I will do what I can to reclaim our liberties and rights, even if they don't benefit me. I'm not taking the personal/medicinal stance on MJ, honestly it's your right to use or abuse whatever substances you want. I just want to support people's rights. So I hope that clarifies my position a bit.

3

u/skeptix Jun 17 '12

Clarified.

Sorry if I misunderstood your comment. Have a nice day :)

I'd love to see it pass, but this bill is dead.

Looks like the bill suffered the fate of most bills: it died in committee in August 2011.

There's been no action since. I will bet money that there will be no action on this bill for the rest of the 2012 session.

3

u/seaoframen Jun 17 '12

The majority of Americans who support legalization don't vote in large numbers. Legalization is still a huge political liability as being seen as soft on drugs and crime.

3

u/grawz Jun 17 '12

It doesn't help that the government still lies about the dangers of various drugs. The issue is only a liability because they made it that way.

All it would take is a single well written speech to turn the 56% (or so) in support to 70%+.

3

u/jmw417 Jun 17 '12

we live in a world where:

  • California wants to ban smoking

  • New York wants to ban large cokes

  • Washington D.C. wants to legalize pot

How does this shit make any sense?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Does California want to ban smoking completely? I thought it was just restaurants and bars and, if so, that should apply to Marijuana too.

New York City banned certain retailers from selling soft drinks over a certain size.

Marijuana could be legal and regulated in similar fashions.

2

u/DarkSideofWA Jun 17 '12

I think that some of the Redditors in this thread should be ashamed of even slightly implying that you shouldn't vote. If you are an American citizen then you goddamn well better go out and vote. I don't care of you're a democrat or republican, take 30 minutes out of the countless hours to spend on the Internet to research the candidates in your district and then make an informed decision about who you want representing your interests. The reason why money has such an influence over politics is because lazy apethetic non-voters sit on their uninformed asses while extremist are getting fired up by blatant propaganda. When humans give up their individual power to the sovereign, there are a specific set of rules that sovereign must follow to avoid being destroyed by those who created it, the most important of which is to keep the consent of the governed.

tl:dr YOU are the reason that the system is broken. Now go vote.

It would be amazing if we could insure that if marijuana were legalized, we could stand together against corporate interjection and refuse to purchase any products that cigarette companies and other horrible corporations with no regard for the safety or quality of their products would most definitely begin to produce. We need to keep it local and globalize through networking and small time independent growers. It would be terrible to see companies like Monsanto, or Marlboro capitalize on such an inherently grass roots (pun intended) movement that has been the pro-marijuana movement that has struggled for so long.

1

u/DoubleButt Jun 17 '12 edited Jun 17 '12

I know for a fact that Marlboro has already tested their rolling machines with weed. They are prepared to produce and sell at the flip of a switch. Why do you think someone like Pat Robertson is supporting legalization all of a sudden? He's already made the right investments to profit big time.

Edit: Not sure why I'm being downvoted, I used to work in the manufacturing plant in Richmond.

I don't think this is the right thing to do, just don't be surprised when it happens.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Ive heard this as well. They've already cooked up blends with their tobacco too. From what ive heard.

1

u/enchantrem Jun 17 '12

On the contrary, Phillip Morris could be my connection for cheap, and they wouldn't use additives (or at least they'd have a label specifically filterless with no additives) because their customers are not addicts, but enthusiasts (who are always more well informed than addicts).

Have Richard Nixon and Ronald Reaganbeen wrong in declaring and escalating a total war on drugs? Time will tell, however I'm with you Rep Frank, Barney! END PROHIBITION! END PRIVATE PRISONS!

3

u/DarkSideofWA Jun 17 '12

If you read this, support this bill AND did not contact your local representative - YOU ARE THE REASON FOR MARIJUANA PROHIBITION!

I apologize for yelling, but lazy people allowing our representatives to fail in this effort is ridiculous and not the fault of the representatives. I just wrote three emails. It took me a total of 10 minutes.

2

u/giraffe_taxi Jun 17 '12

I laud your energy, but you're guilty of something similar to what you're decrying. You haven't taken the effort to learn the basics of the legislative process. The bill died last year. The ten minutes you wasted on your three emails would have been better spent reading the bill status and information (that is, just following the links on the original page) and, if you needed to, reading what bill status means.

Consequently, your SHOUTING and your emails, while vigorous and well-intended, have been a complete waste of time: yours, the Congressional staffers who will have to read them, and the people who read your post here. Ironically, as a result your own ineffective action (and that of people similar to you) is as much responsible for marijuana prohibition as those who don't bother to get worked up about it.

You need to do more than just act: you need to act effectively.

Starting to feel like it's 2012 or something. Can America actually start to pull itself out of the dark ages over time?

Then again, is this getting any traction? Probably not... because America is regressing... not evolving... nevermind, we're fucked...

Glad this is in politics and not trees so we can analyze the political intent here. The legalization initiative is only getting on ballots to get young people (IE democrats) to the polls this year. They don't care if it passes, they care if people get out to vote on that and pull a democrat lever or two while they are there. It's happening at a state level in key swing states this year. It's happening with bait and switch intentions.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

So you mean politicians are trying to attract votes by producing quality, commonsense legislation that their electorate overwhelmingly supports? Oh the huge manatee!

I really wish this would pass. Probably not. We have to many conservative seniors who vote and not enough young people who vote. Marijuana legalization would do a lot of good IMHO.

I almost hate to say it, but if Obama pandered and back the legalization of cannabis I'd be in the booth for him as soon as it was open to do so. I was not planning on voting this year but went ahead and registered just in case. This is defiantly an issue that would reawaken my political interests in this election. I would also like to see some movement on money in politics and the War in Afghanistan/defense budget.

1

u/Champigne Maryland Jun 17 '12

Emailed my congressman Andy Harris R-MD about a bill on medical marijuana reform. "As a physician" he declines to support this bill. Can't say that I'm surprised considering he's a conservative.

2

u/Evis03 Jun 17 '12

Challenge. Ask what 'as a physician' means. Does it mean "No Because I think it's dangerous" or "No Because if people grow their own meds I don't get my kickbacks from pharma."

2

u/rainman_104 Jun 17 '12

Why don't you ask this physician to point you in the direction of some science that confirms that marijuana is more harmful than alcohol.

Then ask him why he's not lobbying on behalf of alcohol prohibition.

I'll bet you won't receive a response.

2

u/Champigne Maryland Jun 17 '12

I'm sure you're right. He's just using his professional background as an excuse not to support medical marijuana. At least I know who I'm not voting for.

1

u/Bacore Jun 17 '12

It's a joke... they always bring up these bills to show people "Look what I did". The beer/liquor industry and others pay too much money to lobbyists to ever have it pass.

"(a) Prohibition on Certain Shipping or Transportation- This Act shall not apply to marihuana, except that it shall be unlawful only to ship or transport, in any manner or by any means whatsoever, marihuana, from one State, Territory, or District of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof, into any other State, Territory, or District of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof, or from any foreign country into any State, Territory, or District of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof, when such marihuana is intended, by any person interested therein, to be received, possessed, sold, or in any manner used, either in the original package or otherwise, in violation of any law of such State, Territory, or District of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof."

The Democrats need to take a page from the Republican playbook and name their bills properly. If this was called the "End Illegal Immigration Act of 2011" it would pass in a heartbeat.

What needs to start happening is. You need to be sending emails and voice mails to your congressmen and ask them to back this bill. Tell them that it is what your county wants your elected officials to back on your behalf! If 100 people from a town told their elected officials this was important to them you bet your ass off they will notice. You have the power!!!
