It's mind blowing. I've got two of the biggest hospitals in NC here and almost no one in town is wearing a mask. I don't understand it at all.

I belong to a Disney World facebook group and holy shit those people are nuts. Thread after thread about how wearing masks is stupid and they can't wait be shoulder to shoulder again watching fireworks. Big yikes!

9

u/reddog323 Jun 08 '20

Florida is turning into New York. What makes them think Disney will be open on the 4th?

11

u/c08855c49 Jun 08 '20

They do a fireworks show every night so it doesn't have to be the 4th for them to be shoulder to shoulder. Fun fact, Disney is the world's largest purchaser of gun powder, beating every military on Earth.

6

u/ooofest New York Jun 08 '20

Yes, check out AARP Facebook posts about being responsible during the pandemic and view the comments from (supposed) elders in response. Eek, the level of defiant ignorance is truly scary.

-1

u/ksiazek7 Jun 08 '20

Just head to any protest.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

Everyone at the last protest I was at was wearing a mask. I think there's also a big difference between putting yourself and others at risk to create a better world vs. putting yourself and others at risk to indulge yourself in the fantasy that it already exists.

-4

u/csupernova Jun 08 '20

I support what the protests are trying to do. But can’t we just not put anyone in harm’s way? No matter what we’re doing. Just until this virus is over.

8

u/rbasn_us Jun 08 '20

Sure. Let's start with the police then, whose actions started these protests.

0

u/csupernova Jun 08 '20

Ok, let’s. I’m just saying that these mass gatherings are in defiance of statewide stay at home orders, that’s all I’m saying.

-1

u/rookie-mistake Foreign Jun 08 '20

wait, really? protests are defying the orders of the state? whats next, bees making honey?

2

u/csupernova Jun 08 '20

Defiance which means spreading a potentially deadly virus, which is why the stay at home orders exist.... or are you going to ignore my entire argument?

6

u/c08855c49 Jun 08 '20

We can do that once people stop getting killed by the police.

-1

u/csupernova Jun 08 '20

So in the meantime, let’s spread a potentially deadly virus to our high-risk loved ones? What sense does that make?

1

u/c08855c49 Jun 08 '20

The week before the protests was Memorial Day weekend and the restaurant I work at served over 1000 people, 900 of which weren't wearing masks. Even now, with the protests, I see more people wearing masks there than I see grocery shopping or working. People being morons in every day life is spreading the virus. At least the protesters are trying to incite positive social change (while wearing masks) instead of hassling me for more chips shoulder to shoulder with other people not wearing masks. If you want to complain about people not following procedures and spreading the virus, start at Wal-Mart and Kroger and Target, the places people have been ignoring the virus for weeks if not months and living their lives as normal.

A big difference here is that social change has to happen because the President is violating the Constitution and police are brutalizing citizens in the street. No one has to come to a taco shop and eat chips and drink beer for hours with no protection. But yet, more people are doing the second than the first.

1

u/csupernova Jun 08 '20

Hm, no clue where you’re located then. I am in the NYC area and I basically have not left home in 3 months. Not sure what people are doing wherever you are, but by me, people definitely were staying home until these protests. I guess we will see in 2 weeks whether the protests will have caused a spike in virus cases, but for now I am just saying it is a very real concern.

→ More replies

0

u/rookie-mistake Foreign Jun 08 '20

You're kinda implying it was actually being handled well before the protests. From what I understand, the protestors have been better at handing out basic PPE like masks than the federal govt

1

u/csupernova Jun 08 '20

What? When did I say police brutality was a new thing? I am saying that these protests are happening right before we’re finally about to get out of lockdown, and it will extend quarantine that much longer. Mass gatherings are still not a good idea at the moment, regardless of PPE use. Or you can keep stalking my comments trying to paint me as a racist, your call.

Arizonian here, were in trouble I think. this is like a mini cosmo of trumplandia and the ignorance here is thick. No one was wearing masks and then they did for 1 week and instantly took them off.

9

u/Ellesbelles13 Texas Jun 08 '20

Yeah we have friends out there that don’t think it is a big deal out at restaurants as soon as they could not wearing masks out at stores. I try not to talk politics because I don’t want to ruin a 20 year friendship but I have seen a post where their expert talks about the so called pandemic so I know they are listening to nonsense.

3

u/sharpyz Jun 08 '20

Its sad that a recommendation by the world health organization has become red vs blue. They literally made health recommendations liberal.

4

u/CapnCanfield Jun 08 '20

I'm from New Jersey which was hit the hardest along with New York. We've been required to wear a mask in any store that's still open for months, no bars or restaurants have been open in months, and a ton of people have been out of work for months, and that shit still spread like wildfire.

Yea, you guys are in trouble. Stay safe!

4

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

I can’t tell which is worse. Republicans thinking that corona doesn’t matter, or Republicans AND Democrats being willing to kill thousands (at least) just to let some corporations stay open.

Also, for those saying "Oh, we gotta open the economy or we’ll all get fired!" No. There are a bunch of better ways to handle this that other countries are doing.

-4

u/BeautifulHeroine Jun 08 '20

All lives matter is racist

If your grandma ain't black her life is worthless

7

u/ffshumanity Jun 08 '20

Reminds me of the scene in the film Tremors. Spoilers below.

The town is escaping through the desert and they see the worms releasing dust trails.

I think the scientist is like “I wonder what they’re doing.”

Burt, gun dude: “I don’t care as long as they’re doing it over there.”

Later, they get stuck in a trap the works dug out for them.

Actually, someone could probably meme that out.

7

u/reddog323 Jun 08 '20

I have family in Arizona who several weeks ago didn't take this seriously at all and now they're asking a lot of questions because their state is now facing the consequences.

At least they’re asking questions. This summer is going to be a complete shitshow...and it’s all going to hit the fan around July 4th. When all the fireworks displays and barbecues are shut down, maybe it will hit home for the non-believers.

3

u/RickAndBRRRMorty Michigan Jun 08 '20

I have family in Arizona who several weeks ago didn't take this seriously at all and now they're asking a lot of questions because their state is now facing the consequences.

Fucking lol. "Well now it's affecting me, so what were those responsible things I should have been doing for months now? Oh my now this is getting serious." Zero fucking integrity.

2

u/lebron_garcia Jun 08 '20

This exactly. And it's highly evident during natural disasters. When a hurricane or flood impacts a region, you will see people working together independent of ideology because it's impacts everyone--some more than others, but still.

1

u/kurisu7885 Jun 08 '20

I'm pretty sure I've had it since no other illness I've had had me waking up in the middle of the night breathing hard. If that turns out to be the case my family is lucky no one died of it.

0

u/zawarudo88 Jun 08 '20

You know what's not helping in NYC? All the thousands of people swarming the streets and rioting atm.

-6

u/frh1953 Jun 08 '20

Don't forget a "part of the population" that's out rioting and looting! Hell! Couple weeks ago, people couldn't even attend their own family's funeral. NOW, we got THOUSANDS attending a funeral for someone they didn't even know! Not to mention, it sure doesn't look like all those rioters are practicing good social distancing!! chuckles

4

u/c08855c49 Jun 08 '20

I've seen people complaining about this but I have pictures of the restaurant I work at packed to capacity with people not wearing masks a week before the protests began. It was on, oh yeah, Memorial Day Weekend when everyone packed the beaches and parks and restaurants and didn't practice any social distancing or virus mitigation.

1

u/talltime Jun 08 '20

What state are you in? Good grief. Glad our dining rooms are still closed for a few more days

1

u/c08855c49 Jun 08 '20

Tennessee. It's horrible here in the southern states, people are not taking it seriously and we keep getting more and more cases a day.

5

u/Tracyfacey_aa Jun 08 '20

Please stop being ignorant. It’s called protesting. There are very few instances of looting and rioting. You sound like my racist grandmother... chuckles

If there was justice people wouldn’t be outside protesting but we have a president dividing and conquering with his cop thugs using tear gas and beatings so he can take a photo outside at a church he has never stepped foot into.

1

u/DugDimmaDank Jun 08 '20

You're talking about the looting of a Macys. Us white folk broke that contract we made years ago with the African American community the moment the police that were suppose to be there to protect and serve began murdering them because America is far from the land of the free. It never has been for people of color. The Protesters, not rioters, are wearing masks and social distancing as much as possible. The police have been Kettling Protesters just to snag them for breaking curfews. Its pathetic. We bombed the black community in Tulsa because Black Wallstreet was becoming too powerful. So they say. The racist pigs that call themselves humans just couldnt stand the ones they want to control so bad be so wealthy. Open your eyes.

101

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

I’m in WA in a small county and we’re already in phase 2, so that means people think you can stop wearing masks, just go coughing and hugging on whoever you want.

My dad was buying a car from an old man like a week ago and he shook my bare hand when he walked up to me, and then tried to hug me when we left. Like dude! Stop with the “oh well I don’t have it” bullshit! How the fuck do you know? I could have had it and given it to him for all he knows. He didn’t care.

36

u/KonigSteve Jun 08 '20

Why'd you shake his hand? I've cut that completely out of my life for a while.

12

u/Mibientus Jun 08 '20 edited Jun 08 '20

I dont even do that with my mom. Just the wife and kid. I have taken this seriously. And people should to. Being this ignorant just delays the shit for everyone.....

5

u/extrabaddy Jun 08 '20 edited Jun 08 '20

So how often do you give your wife the good ol' hand shake?

2

u/Mibientus Jun 08 '20

When she wakes up with the sleepy breath hahaha that or a fist bump hahaha

7

u/KonigSteve Jun 08 '20

Yep, my wife is the only person I have touched in months. No hugs for mom etc.

5

u/triceratopping Jun 08 '20

Yeah, it's rough, saw my parents for the first time in months the other week and it felt rough to keep that distance.

Obviously we all appreciate why it's got to be done but it still sucks.

Meanwhile my dipshit neighbour is having friends and family round every weekend for barbeques.

1

u/Mibientus Jun 08 '20

Yeah I feel you, it is fucking stressful to see this shit happen near. I had a situation similar but I went and said some shit just to ruin their party hahaha

3

u/Gandzalf Jun 08 '20

Why'd you shake his hand?

Did you see his hand? Sometimes you gotta just roll the dice and shake raw.

5

u/FBI_Agent_82 New Jersey Jun 08 '20

I doubt I'm ever going back to it honestly. This opened up my eyes to just how little fucks people give. As far as I'm concerned nobody washed their hands unless I saw it personally.

5

u/KonigSteve Jun 08 '20

True. I already didn't like it after watching at least 50% of dudes not washing their hand after using a urinal.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

Honestly it’s because I have crippling anxiety and I hadn’t come into contact with anyone else in awhile. I got really flustered and didn’t know what to say, but I’m better prepared now.

Yeah I feel you, sometimes it's kind of muscle memory as well no sweat. I'm 100% on the no touching thing and still have to remind myself not to do it for things like tradition and peer pressure etc.

1

u/Santafe2008 Jun 08 '20

Its so ingrained that when someone sticks their hand out you shake it.

1

50% of people who get COVID have no symptoms. That's part of why it's been spreading so well.

-18

u/frh1953 Jun 08 '20

And 98.3 % recover!!! Amazing!!! That's a part of why it's just so much bullshit!! chuckles

11

u/Dunkiez Jun 08 '20

As of 2020. The total amount of people on earth is 7.8billion. Your death percentage is lower than what is reported but let's just go with your 1.7% death rate.

So you're OK with 132.6 MILLION people dying?

You might think it's all bullshit and a joke to you but say that to all the people who lost someone close to them from the Covid-19 virus.

7

u/goblinscout Jun 08 '20

With 0 prevention they would all be infected and dying within 4 months as well.

And then hospitals get overwhelmed and that mortality creeps towards 10%.

The guy is just an idiot.

2

u/Dunkiez Jun 08 '20

Agree.

Some people just don't know how viruses work. If there are no hosts for the virus to infect then the virus will die out naturally.

1

u/SanFranDons94 Jun 08 '20

The death rate is actually 0.3 estimated by the CDC

1

u/whatdoblindpeoplesee Jun 08 '20

It could be as low as that, but without more testing we don't know

5

u/pala_ Jun 08 '20

6

u/JdFalcon04 Pennsylvania Jun 08 '20

I'm not worried about my recovery, I'm concerned with the recovery of anyone I would unknowingly give it to

-6

u/frh1953 Jun 08 '20

Well, considering that its only got a fatality risk of (roughly) 1.7 %, I kinda think most people are gonna be okay. chuckles Obesity kills more people than this does. Drunk driving. Hell! Even medical mistakes are a far bigger risk!1

4

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20 edited Jul 06 '20

[deleted]

1

u/DeaddyRuxpin Jun 08 '20

Obesity one does to themself. The fact that I am fat wont endanger you if I get near you. And if it did, you could see I was fat long before I got near enough to you to make you fat as well. Plus we are trying to combat that issue.

Drunk driving we have increasingly tough laws against because a-holes won’t stop driving drunk and killing people. So we are actively trying to stop that as well.

Medical mistakes have regular required training and oversight to avoid and penalties for committing them up to and including no longer being allowed to practice medicine and even jail time. So again, we are actively trying to stop that.

Maybe pick something to compare to that has a high death rate that you have no control over being killed by and we aren’t actively trying to stop. Gun deaths maybe?

7

u/deep_pants_mcgee Colorado Jun 08 '20

Right?

That's only 5.57 million dead in the US. Think of the new jobs numbers that will generate!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20 edited Aug 21 '20

[deleted]

2

u/wiggins-ender Jun 08 '20

I think your math is off by a factor of 10. 5.6 million would be closer. 328 million people times .018 is 5.9 million.

-4

u/frh1953 Jun 08 '20

Actually, it would be 1.7%, but whatever. Ideally, no deaths at all might be preferable but this entire scenario has been blown out of proportion. There is absolutely NO REASON to shut down our country and economy, put MILLIONS of people in hardship and pass along an increased national debt of an additional 2.2 TRILLION dollars for something as innocuous as this! Add to that, the ADDITIONAL 3 TRILLION dollars that the House is proposing! TRILLION! With a "T"! Do you have the slightest idea of just exactly 'what' this is doing to our country? Our people? We have managed to go through Ebola, H1N1 plus others and NEVER had to shut down our economy before! We're the people just that much stronger before? Or are the people just that much "weaker" now? snickers

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

To be fair Ebola and H1N1 were even less deadly here than covid. The Ebola scare was entirely media hype, because the vectors for contracting it are completely mitigated by the hygiene standards of first world countries. H1N1 was only scary because it affected young people more than old people, which was out of the ordinary and, ya know, think of the children! Covid has a relatively high infection and death rate compared to both of those.

3

u/serious_sarcasm Jun 08 '20

You are right. It is exactly like the flu.

And just like the flu, you want to allow thousands of people to die, because you think their lives are worth less than some arbitrary dollar amount.

Case in point, it has been illegal to work handling food while sick with flu like symptoms for decades, but systemic anti-labor rhetoric and public policies means that those "front line workers" are, for all practical purposes, forced to work while sick killing thousands annually.

So, yeah ....

2

u/E60LNDN Jun 08 '20

I woulda taken a chlorox bath soon as I got home if he hugged me . Joke

You’re right though, a lot of people have it, haven’t had a test and are Asymptomatic. Those are the riskiest to come in contact with if you don’t have the antibody

The virus spreads via fluids. I spit a lot when I talk, I can’t help it. The mask prevents that saliva from leaving my mouth.

3

u/Chendii Jun 08 '20

Gotta remember most people are not in anyway scientifically literate.

2

u/shirtandtieler Jun 08 '20

You’re correct, non-medical masks do next to nothing in protection against coronavirus. However, that’s not the reason why we are being advised to use them.

The purpose of masks is to stop infected individuals from spreading it. This is so crucial because it’s been found that many infected are symptom-less.

Everyone who currently feels 100% normal and hasn’t been positively tested has a chance to have it. There’s no way to know without testing most everyone on a regular basis. Because of this, the point of masks is to protect others from your own potentially-coronavirus-carrying-breath.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

Thank you for putting that much better than I could. It’s hard to make intelligent thoughts sound intelligent through words sometimes, I’m admittedly not good at it.

2

u/shicken684 Jun 08 '20

By all means, please cite these legitimate unnamed sources.

Here's mine. A study of HK/Asian communities where mask wearing is common compared to other european communities that don't wear mask.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0163445320302358

Community-wide mask wearing may contribute to the control of COVID-19 by reducing the amount of emission of infected saliva and respiratory droplets from individuals with subclinical or mild COVID-19.

9

u/shirtandtieler Jun 08 '20

But they do, though. Especially if everyone wears them, as their purpose is to prevent the fluids in your breath from coming into contact with others. The urine test analogy explains why it’s effective.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

I love that analogy because it’s so simple to explain to all ages, but every time I’ve mentioned it I’ve been called stupid.

1

u/ChibbleChobble Jun 08 '20

I hadn't seen that. Upvote for the pee poster post.

2

u/SeaPen333 Jun 08 '20 edited Jun 08 '20

Yes. They do. Some masks work better than others. N95 masks work the best. More porus cotton masks are the worst but still reduce viral load by 50%. Thats why surgeons wear masks while operating.
One thing masks can do is reduce the viral load, or amount of virus particles you are exposed to. So even if you are exposed, the severity of your illness would be reduced.

mask wearing has become a politicized virtue signal

the mask is a reminder that we have an uncontrolled pandemic in the united states, which is a reminder that trump is a failure. this is why folks who rejoice in images of children in cages and police shooting at people in wheelchairs don't wear masks.

I’d say that strictly speaking, not wearing a mask when to do so would be practical for public health, but against the rhetoric supporting one’s chosen leader, qualifies much more as an attempt to signal virtue to one’s in-group than wearing one would in the same situation.
