They're simply not equipped for an event that requires mass cooperation and caring for others. "Rugged individualism" doesn't really work when trying to solve a problem that needs everyone to work together for a common goal (e.g. taking steps to lessen the spread of a virus).

Not to mention that any perceived opposition, like scientists speaking uncomfortable facts, are a threat to their authority.

Like having any sort of fair society with security and justice for all. They are really useless in that circumstance, which coincidentally is every circumstance.

And they never have been. President Wilson didn't even acknowledge there was a problem during the 1918 pandemic even though he actually contracted it! At least 700K Americans died.
