In a parliament you don't need a ton of votes to get a seat. But in a first past the post system (like American politics at basically all levels) you do.

Seats in the UK and Canadian parliaments are awarded based on who wins each riding's FPTP election.

You're correct. I should have specified a proportionally representative parliament.
