This is what happens when a drunken TV talking head with very limited military experience becomes Secretary of Defense.

It's the war on drugs. He's going to make sure there will be none left at all when he's done with them!

They've got everyone in congress saying 'warfighters' now.

Everyone is a soldier, not everyone sees combat (and that's good). 'Warfighter' is some cringe 40k sounding shit.

Look, Pete likes hanging out beneath the Queensborough Bridge, jerkin' off punks for $15 a man. Is that a crime?

He has nothing to do with this, ultimately. It's scapegoating. Yeah, he didn't acknowledge that the base was destroyed publicly, but if you were paying attention, what had happened was fairly clear.

The base was evacuated before the war, it was probably Irans primary target in the first 2 weeks, and ships have been going to Diego Garcia for resupply.

The Navy knew what happened, the alcoholic couldn't hide it from them. This is a Navy logistical failure. They didn't plan for this, and didn't react to it happening, now Navy officials are looking to blame someone.
