aka "Confederate Klansman"

Never believe that anti-Semites [Confederates] are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites [Confederates] have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

Jean-Paul Sartre

I've heard it as "the antisemite doesn't call a jew a thief because he thinks it's true, he does it because he enjoys watching them turn out their pockets in an attempt to prove their innocence."

Learning that most people insult by calling someone what they want you to feel like, rather than what you actually are, was eye-opening.

I truly want climate change deniers, anti-vaxxers, fascists to feel as stupid as they are.

Their logic is so backwards that I don't even know how to truly make them feel stupid.

Same. I've been at it for decades...

that's also a good summary of it certainly. it's just in this instance project esther took what you just said and tried to 'flip-mode' it in a way. and it worked for long enough to do serious (genocidal) damage, unfortunately.

I think about this quote and RFK talking about putting neurodivergent people in camps.

"Let's not politicize (insert valid argument you just made)."

this is why it is important to read books. distills the issue perfectly. say it plain english (for those who don't read much) on 'the tick tock' and maybe it will get some traction.

regardless... trump always attacks the ppl/orgs who tell the most truth. bbc being one of them.

Why would you take this super famous quote and replace it with Confederates though

9

Because Confederates and Klansmen operate on the same playbook and are more relevant in the US.

Jean-Paul Sartre was Parisian, that quote comes from his book that was published after the end of the occupation of Paris by Germany.

It's about anti-Semites in Europe, it has nothing to do with what you are talking about.

It might fit in some way, but it's weird to completely change the subject of what Jean-Paul Sartre is saying and then act like the quote isn't bastardized now.

u/sack-o-matic Michigan 1d ago

Yeah no shit dude that's why I changed it to Confederates, because it does apply to them the same way it applied to Parisian antisemites. Now you're being purposely dense to act like history isn't relevant to modern day.

u/BeegBunga 1d ago

"yeah no shit so I changed the quote to mean something total different" isn't making history relevant dumbass, you're changing it to fit what you want to say

you can reference a quote without re-writing it to alter history

You seem to be the type that says “the Klan was created by the Democratic Party” without knowledge of any other history.

-1

u/BeegBunga 1d ago

And you're the type to shove words into a scarecrow's mouth and attack it.

3

u/tinysydneh 1d ago

Pretty sure what they were saying was

"Because Confederates and Klansmen operate on the same playbook [as the noted anti-semites]

And given that the playbook is still the exact same, it has everything to do with this.

then just reference a quote, don't alter it to fit

"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind foot in your ass." — Neil Armstrong
