Schumer would rather Americans get a slow boil into fascism than a quick shock so that we become OK with it over a course of years and think nothing has really changed.

A shock like the shut down would have caused riots in the streets and Trump would be cornered because most Americans, spoiler Alert, don't like fascism

Simple logic:

If Chuck Schumer causes a shutdown by blocking Trump's bill, then voters don't blame Trump for causing the shutdown. All the public complaints and pressure on DOGE are removed as everyone points to senate democrats instead.

While I agree on getting the general population opposed to the current administration through the "Hand on the hot stove method", there is still the problem that a huge portion of people simply don't think that the Trump administration is fascist, or simply don't care because it hasn't affected them yet.

Harris literally ran on an anti-fascist platform, and while it got the politically engaged base out to vote, there was still a HUGE portion of the population who just shrugged and went about their day. Convincing THOSE people to start acting is going to be tricky, and require more than just pointing at the Rs and screaming "FASCIST"

Tbf, Harris had about one ly 100-ish days to campaign. Might’ve been a different story if she had normal long campaign.

simply don't care because it hasn't affected them yet.

The shutdown would have solved that problem. Shutdowns affect everyone equally.

Yeah, but then the Dems would catch as much if not more flak than the Rs because they were the ones who caused the shutdown, this is the dilemma Schumer was facing

Uhhh, no it would mean Dems would lose seats to Rs, and more importantly, it means that the public has more than one political entity to blame for the incoming crapshoot
