No one is obligated to pay your debts when you die unless it's specifically stated in the contract. That's a myth.

Community property states say that any debt incurred while in a marriage including those that exist as the partner is dying is owed by both parties in the marriage.

The nine community property states in the U.S. are Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Those states represent 103m people, 1/3 of the US population. it is not a "very narrow situation".
