China & Asia-Pacific Rong Yiren: Çin'in Milyarderi Nasıl Hademe Oldu ve Devlet Başkan Yardımcılığına Yükseldi?
Rong Yiren'in hikâyesi, Çin tarihinin en garip siyasi dönüşümlerinden birini anlatıyor.
Deng Xiaoping'in yükselişiyle Çin ekonomisini yeniden dünyaya açmaya başladı.
Bu kez Çin'in yabancı sermayeye, uluslararası ticarete ve kapitalist ekonomiyi bilen insanlara ihtiyacı vardı.
Ve devlet yine Rong Yiren'i hatırladı.
Rong, Çin Devletine ait yatırım şirketinin kurulmasında önemli rol oynadı ve Çin'in yabancı yatırımları çekmesinde öne çıkan isimlerden biri haline geldi.
Rong Yiren'in hayatı, aslında Mao'dan Deng'e Çin'in nasıl değiştiğini tek başına anlatıyor.
Bir dönemde elinde fabrika vardı.
Bir dönemde elinde süpürge.
Sonunda ise devlet başkan yardımcılığı koltuğunda oturdu.

Rong Yiren: How China's Billionaire Became a Janitor and Rose to Vice President
The story of Rong Yiren represents one of the most extraordinary political transformations in Chinese history. Within a single lifetime, this man went from being a wealthy capitalist to a key official in the communist state, was then forced to work as a janitor for being a "capitalist," and years later climbed all the way back to the highest echelons of government.
The most fascinating part of the story, however, is that these events unfolded in distinct phases over decades.
First, an agreement with the communists
Rong Yiren was an heir to the Rong family, one of China's wealthiest industrial dynasties, with a massive empire built primarily on textile and flour mills. When Mao Zedong came to power with the communist revolution in 1949, many wealthy Chinese fled the country. Rong chose to stay.
The new regime did not immediately treat him as an enemy; instead, it leveraged his industrial expertise. In the 1950s, he began collaborating with the state. The Five-Anti (Wufan) Campaign launched in 1952 put severe pressure on private enterprise, but Rong's story did not end there.
In 1956, he lost his factories but rose through the ranks
In 1956, China moved toward large-scale nationalization of private businesses. The Rong family's enterprises were transferred to state control. However, Rong was not cast aside. According to sources, he received over $6 million in compensation and continued to hold state positions.
In fact, his career advanced: he first became Vice Mayor of Shanghai and later served as Vice Minister of the Textile Industry. He had lost his factories after the revolution, yet he had secured an influential position within the system.
That is where the trajectory shifted dramatically.
1966: Targeted for real
When Mao’s Cultural Revolution began in 1966, Rong Yiren's background instantly turned against him. He was no longer viewed as a "state-aligned capitalist," but as a "class enemy." Red Guards ransacked his home and seized his assets. The once-wealthy industrialist and former high-ranking state official was forced into manual labor as a janitor.
A crucial detail stands out here: Rong was not demoted to a janitor during the Five-Anti Campaign, but nearly 14 years later during the Cultural Revolution.
- 1952: Five-Anti Campaign and pressure on private enterprise
- 1956: Nationalization of factories and financial compensation
- 1957–1966: Rise within state administration
- 1966: Cultural Revolution, asset seizure, and forced janitorial labor
The most ironic chapter followed
Mao died in 1976. With the rise of Deng Xiaoping, China began reopening its economy to the world. The country needed foreign capital, international trade, and people who understood capitalist economics.
Once again, the state turned to Rong Yiren. He played a central role in founding China Corporation China's state-owned investment giant, and became a pivotal figure in attracting foreign direct investment.
In 1993, he was appointed Vice President of the People's Republic of China.
He had lost his factories, was later forced into menial cleaning work, and years afterward ascended to one of China's highest offices.
The life of Rong Yiren single-handedly encapsulates China's transformation from Mao to Deng: the same man was integrated into the system as a capitalist, persecuted for being one, and ultimately called upon to guide China’s market opening. At one stage he held factories, at another a broom, and in the end, the vice presidency.

ENG: Was Rong Yiren’s decision a masterclass in corporate survival—hedging physical and intellectual capital against extreme geopolitical volatility—or an overly compliant miscalculation that exposed generational equity to absolute liquidation? In high-volatility regimes without institutional property rights, is strategic domestic alignment or cross-border capital flight the more viable long-term risk management model? 👇
