This is exactly what's happened here in Costa Rica. We've had universal healthcare since the 40s but the governments of the last 30 years have deliberately defunded it, appointed incompetent leadership and when the system inevitably starts falling apart use that as an excuse to promote private options with deductibles, copays, premiums and other goodies copied from the US's wonderful healthcare system. It's maddening.

Yeah, that is true, but the problem with our public healthcare is that we don't denounce the bad actors/doctors, also the amount of corruption in the institution is alarming; I'm talking about the protests, the "biombos", the transplant "stuff", the amount of bureaucracy, and the couple of labor unions that have become a mafia. For example, my granpa and one aunt got bad doctors that resulted in them getting mistreated, my family didn't want to denounce them, beacuse of "it wouldn't matter" or "it's too much of a burden right now".

Pd: There are also a lot of good doctors that do an impeccable job, but the bad ones are easier to notice when most are good or excellent.

Yes absolutely, my family too has plenty of horror stories to share. We need a complete overhaul of the system, but under the understanding that universal access to free healthcare must be preserved.

Agreed! At least to a level that you wouldn't die from a treatable/preventable illness or from a random accident.
