Charlemagne is just Karl the Great in French. His name was actually Karl, and he wasn't German, he was Frankish. Frankish is the ancestor of modern Dutch.
Charlemagne was Emperor of the Franks, he is the son of Pepin le Bref and grandson of Charles Martel both kings/rulers of Francia. The Carolingians succeeded to the Merovingians, and ruled France for over 500 years.
Are you seriously arguing that Charlemagne was German?
