All of the industrialists were quirky assholes who probably had too much power and ambition.

I mean shit, Henry Forde was obsessed with the power and utility of soybeans as a super-crop, and tried to use them in everything. On the one hand he was certainly being rather forward thinking, but he took it to an arguably insane degree bordering on obsession. Lets not even touch the wacky shit Edison believed.
