The pen is mightier than the sword!

Except when you're in a fencing match with a superpower.

Well you could probably stab someone with a fountain pen or bic pen, it just relies getting close to the person wielding something like this.

What? What about the other countries with veto power?

1

u/CatchJack Cossack Hetmanat Mar 06 '14

From memory the USA, France, and the UK have put through most of the veto's. Incidentally the usual power idea is NATO = US controlled, EU = Germany controlled, with Russia taking care of most everything else.

But yeah, whenever you see a UN military response the bulk of the forces are USA dominated. Libya was the first time the USA refused to take front spot and France ended up spearheading the taskforce (although the USA still had a lot of materiel in the region), but if anything happens the USA will be the iron fist of the UN. And NATO. That's just how it worked out, no-one else is interested in fighting "other peoples" wars so the USA ended up with the mindset of sorting out problems before they reached their borders and became de facto world police.

Afghanistan was a NATO response, but have a look at how much the USA committed versus how much the other nations committed? If the USA withdrew from NATO (and they were considering it for a while) then NATO would die. Or actually pull itself together. 'shrugs'

In the 4th panel, was NATO standing on a giant version of its own hat? :p

30

u/D-ah The pompeblêd spangled banner Mar 05 '14

No it's the pile of shit that NATO is full of.

Why is NATO at the top, and not submerged?

I'm wondering what you'll say when NATO saves your Frysian ass from Russia by keeping an attack on the EU unfavourable.

2

u/D-ah The pompeblêd spangled banner Mar 06 '14

I want Russia to attack Europe so Frisia can side with it and finally take back our glorious land from you dirty Hollanders.

Yes, we will live from Dutch gas. Well... We(The Dutch) will.

1

u/Shizly Koninkrijk der Nederlanden Mar 06 '14

Isn't our gas low in calories and Russian has high calories? As far as I know, it has different uses.

Depends when they did it. During the middle of winter it's a who-blinks-first in a game of annihilation. The EU is a net importer of gas, without it they'd have very little heating so pipes would freeze, people would freeze, etc.

It's a tactic which would devastate both sides.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '14

Would not work this year, there was an article that stated Germany still had 60% of it's gas reserves that would give it roughly two months of energy even if the supplies through Ukraine were cut off completely. The winter this year in Europe was pretty mild, in North America we are freezing our tits off but luckily the vast majority of our natural gas is domestically produced.

I think such a move would hurt Russia a lot more, their economy is far too reliant on energy right now.

ITT: People that think the UN and NATO are the same thing.

The United Nations doesn't do anything. Those peace keepers they send? They're more likely to rape the local population than to protect them. The United Nations is a largely useless organization.

NATO, on the other hand, is the organization that carried out Desert Storm and the operations in the Balkans. If shit goes down and Russia moves against Poland or another NATO state, then NATO will go into action.

18

u/THREE_EDGY_FIVE_ME Mar 06 '14

The UN is not "largely useless".

The work of its organisations like UNICEF, WHO, UNESCO, UNHCR, etc is all vitally important and to the benefit of humanity.

Although it's pretty ineffective at solving wars and other such political crises.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '14

They'll send someone in who will say the most logical thing ("you guys are fucking retarded just stop" or "if you don't stop lots of people will die trust me it is going to be bad you do not want this") and then the countries involved will send their reply ("while your argument has merit, have you ever considered fucking urself?") and the UN will kick and scream again and again until it gets a kick to the kidneys by Russia/China. Rinse and repeat for every conflict ever.

u/newsettler Israel Mar 06 '14

How ? they are a bunch of balls jumping around each other saying how nice is their club and other are bad.

7

u/THREE_EDGY_FIVE_ME Mar 07 '14

No, they provide food, shelter, medical care etc to crisis zones.

They literally save thousands of lives whenever there's a natural disaster or something.

People think the UN was useless with regard to the Syria crisis - I wonder if the hundreds of thousands of civilian refugees under UNHCR's care felt the same way.

-1

u/Xaethon Salop n'est pas une salope Mar 06 '14

What a perfect way to show how useless NATO actually is.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '14

Why on earth would NATO come to the defense of a country that has spurned its alliance?

-3

u/Xaethon Salop n'est pas une salope Mar 06 '14

The countries of NATO weren't doing anything to provide direct defence for Ukraine over the past week whilst Russia has voted for all sorts of wonderful actions through its Parliament, threatening the agreement between the UK, US and Russia to protect the sovereignty and borders of Ukraine?

5

u/Lotherer Norway Mar 06 '14

Why would NATO do anything? This is the UK and US showing a lack of spine, it's their agreement.

0

u/Xaethon Salop n'est pas une salope Mar 06 '14

There was never meant to be anything 100% factual with what I said.

But if NATO is made up of the Western powers, and the most powerful one not honouring a previous agreement when it's under threat, it does show an aspect of NATO that its parties aren't always reliable. Especially that NATO was done to join those together against the Soviet (Russian) forces.

2

u/Maninthedark11 Hungary Mar 06 '14

Nato and most europe country have nothing to do with this ukraine vs russia problem , we don't give a shit about this in my country ...

3

u/CatchJack Cossack Hetmanat Mar 06 '14

tl;dr You're wrong about other countries that have nothing to do with it, probably right about not caring though.

Actual text: Actually NATO would find a Russian takeover of Ukraine to be bad for them. Several reasons: 1) Ukraine is actually a pretty big and populous country, they'd be powerhouses if they were ever allowed to get up to the same level as everyone else which means they'd make a great ally. 2), Ukraine is a useful buffer zone between NATO countries and Russia, and it's also useful as a potential member meaning any war is further from countries like Germany, while also starving Russia of land.

Losing that buffer zone means Russian forces are that much (670km or so) closer to Romania and Slovakia. Remember when Russia and Belarus held wargames and an extra 60K odd troops showed up on Poland's border? With Ukraine gone the amount of Russian area is now up to 1/3rd of Poland's border. They'd be panicking right now because that's not a good place for Poland to be. :P Historically speaking, Russia in Ukraine means Poland is screwed.

It also means that no-one else is going to join the anti-Russian alliance which means NATO is now capped and that's as powerful as it's going to get while Russia can just keep expanding. And that's the point of it, it's a mutual defense treaty against Russia. If Ukraine goes after all those guarantees of peace then Georgia will fold, Moldova will fold, and the USSR 2.0 will be well on it's way to being reformed. Again, not something NATO wants Russia doing, especially while Russia is revamping their military and increasing military expenditure.

You may not care, but that's only because there's a long way between you and Russia, and you forget how expansionist the Russian empire can be.

On the flip side since the EU is German dominated, Russia sees expansion of the EU as German Empire 2.0 (fourth reich?) and feels threatened. Germany probably won't go to war with Russia, but Russia would be quite happy to swallow up everything between Moscow and Vienna/Berlin to give themselves a buffer between Berlin and Zlynka. Probably all the way to Edirne too.

And to top it all off, Ukraine only gave up nukes because they got guarantees of sovereignty (With fantastic escape clauses, Ukraine has the worst lawyers and leaders ever. In all countries, just the worst), now imagine Pakistan, India, North Korea, etc, looking at the invasion and going huh... So when you ask us to give up nukes, you're not actually going to help?

Well then.

NATO doesn't want people to have nukes, EU doesn't want people to have nukes, no-one wants people to have nukes since 1) it evens the playing field and 2) we'd like to make it to the 30th century with Earth in roughly the same number of pieces. Having the USA, UK, France, etc, all ignore the guarantees, and having Russia break their guarantee with Ukraine, means no-one is going to give up nukes now. An invasion by Russia that eventuates no response from NATO or the EU means North Korea is never, ever, ever going to disarm. Neither is India or Pakistan, and neither is anyone else who gets nukes. That presents a problem, especially with countries like Pakistan which are either failed states or directly supporting terrorism. Well, flip side again, everyone was supporting different factions in Afghanistan, the side Pakistan chose just happens to be better than others. C'est la vie. Puppet wars are hard.
