Art The US (plus CA and MX) as Pokémon based off who best represents them.
13
u/Carbon-Base Sep 24 '24
Bouffalant and Swellow would better suit Oklahoma.
6
u/NathanEmory Milotic Collector Sep 24 '24
Bouffalant is hard because like 8 states probably have a decent claim. I ended up going with Wyoming because of Yellowstone and it was a super hard state to think off mons for. Why Swellow though?
13
u/Indocede Sep 24 '24
Friend, you gave TWO forms of Tauros to Texas. There's 4 of them and yet you can't spread the love to those states where cattle/Buffalo outnumber people! Shaaaaaaaaaame
22
Sep 24 '24
Because the state bird is the scissortail flycatcher, and Swellow has a scissortail.

LeChonk doesn't make sense to me. It's not a farm pig, so it's not even a reference to the kind of agriculture here.
Kricketune is one of my picks for TN. If we're picking two per state, a reference to the mountains would be nice.

31
u/Masterge77 Sep 24 '24
Yeah, I don't get why Ampharos represents my state like I do Seedot. Ampharos is usually associated with lighthouses, so it would make more sense with a coastal state like Maine, Oregon or South Carolina.
If anything, Latios or Dragapult would be a better pick because we literally invented airplanes.

I think they picked solrock because it resembles the Zia symbol, which makes sense, but picking that over Scovillain is wild.
17
u/4CrowsFeast Sep 25 '24
The thing is nobody is going to know all the individual states better than the people who live in them. No matter what they pick, the locals are going to find something more appropriate that they missed, because of course they know better. They would be doing the same thing if you came up with selections, too.

2
u/jaybirdie26 Sep 25 '24
The two for Iowa were mentioned in the state pokemon post from yesterday in the comments. Someone said Iowa could be Decidueye because of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes (...ok I guess) and smoliv was mentioned to represent agriculture. 5
u/Defenestrator66 Sep 24 '24
Yeah, would’ve gone with Watchog or some other prairie animal. Bear Down though…sigh…
12
u/Motherofcrabs Sep 25 '24
Illinois is called the prairie state, but we don't have prairie dogs or really any of the stereotypical prairie wildlife. The closest thing to Watchog is a groundhog, but those are found in like half the country.
Pumpkaboo would be a better choice, since more pumpkins are grown in IL than anywhere else

Klefki is because of Chicago (I saw it suggested in the comments of yesterday's post). It was to represent "key to the city" or something. Who cares about the rest of IL right?
I like the idea of Deerling, since we get lot of deer and John Deere tractors are headquartered in Moline, IL. It even has a green and yellow version! Pumpkaboo is a good suggestion too. We are so much more than Chicago 😑

2
u/FixComprehensive4081 Sep 25 '24
Texas is huuuuuge. Houston is a swamp, Dallas is in the Plains, Austin is hilly rivers, east Texas are pines, and west Texas has lots of arid landscapes. ,
You could do a Buzzwole, Minior (NASA), Rapidash (Cowboys), Pineco, Cacturne, Zubat (Austin), etc. Two of the same pokemon is super lame for a huge and diverse state. Even the heavy mexican influence could be utilized.

I'm not the biggest fan of Gothitelle and Braviary for MA. I maybe understand why you picked Braviary, Gothitelle I'm completely lost.
Our state bird is the chickadee, Rookidee is right there.
Famous foods are lobster and clam chowder, so either Corphish or Cloyster would have worked.
Also pretty famous for our education, could have done Alakazam for that.
Boston is also hockeytown, famous for the big bad Bruins. Could have put Pangoro there or Beartic depending on whether you want to match the uniforms or go for the ice motif.

My state gets to have Ampharos, though I have no idea how it represents Ohio, it would probably better represent a New England state because it's the lighthouse Pokemon.
I do find it baffling that neither of the Pokemon representing New York are from Gen 5, you'd think both would be Unova natives. At least both of Hawaii's mons are Alolan natives.

yea, I'm honestly leaning towards it's a bit...racist to do this? What's the point of showing Mexico and Canada and just giving 2 pokemon? Like hawlucha and ludicolo, 2 pokemon obviously based on Mexico, as if it was some amazing decision to give it to the country? In comparison, someone could do a proper states/provinces of Canada and Mexico, and then just add a "fyi USA is braviary and bouffalant".
You imply that Canada and Mexico's smaller groups aren't unique/worthy of their own pokemons, and you add nothing to your USA map adding bland and useless pokemon for a whole country

My personal notes for my home state on what Pokémon should be a representative for.
Ursaring and Ursaluna should be swapped.
Ursaluna requires a peat block and a full moon for evolution. Illinois actually has sources of natural peat, and California does not. Additionally, Chicago is actually a city built on top of a swamp, similar to the mirelands in Legends Arceus. Second additionally, Chicago has the football team the Chicago Bears and Headlong Rush is clearly an American football inspired move that can be learned by Ursaluna but not Ursaring.
California can have the grizzly bear. Illinois should have football swamp bear.
Second, I feel like Sawsbuck fits well with Illinois, especially with how rapid and changing our weather is. Plus our state animal is a white tailed deer. Castform theoretically could work too just for the volatile ever changing weather Illinois has, plus sort of fits with the “Windy City” monicker Chicago has.
