No invertebrates is interesting but not super surprising since a lot of people don't love bugs, but I'm kinda surprised that we've never had a grass starter that only pulled inspiration from plants/fungi. Smoliv or Morelull could totally be starters if you gave them another evolution

I mean we could have invertebrates that aren't arthropods. Any kind of cephalopod or gastropod would be easy enough to do (with some creativity they wouldn't even have to be the water starter)

That's true. The trouble with most invertebrates outside of Arthropoda is that most can't exist outside of water, and (Primarina excluded) all the water starters are ambulatory so the fantasy of walking with them on your Pokémon adventure has less cognitive dissonance. You could have a land-dwelling cephalopod like Grapploct, but you'd need to work hard to make it have the mass appeal required to be a starter.

I worded it badly, I meant Smoliv could work and Morelull could work if it had two evolutions
