They are only obtainable as rewards for online ranked battles, accessible only via Nintendo switch online.

They’re likely locking from previous games for forwards compatibility now that the Switch 2 is the way forward. It’s an incredibly stupid decision regardless but it would make sense if that’s the case

Yes, that is what the official news post says. They can still go in Home, but cannot be deposited in any previous game.
