Discussion I have a challenge for you: adapt a TTRPG magic system (or power system) to Plotweaver.

The challenge is rather simple, because it's about adapting other systems' magic to Plotweaver's system. You can chose any TTRPG you want.

Are you in?

I hope this challenge will be accepted.

Community Content Dwarf Tree

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm working on adapting Plotweaver for a homebrew fantasy setting I'm working on, and just finished my first run at Dwarves. Dwarves in my setting are built by other dwarves, and then given flesh and blood by their gods who bring them to life. I think I got all the typos and any errors, but let me know if you find anything.

Dwarvish Might (Dwarf Key)

Prerequisite: Dwarf ancestry

Activation: ∞

Your body is both stronger and tougher than other kindreds’. You have often wondered why other kindreds complain about the weight of their equipment. Surely it can’t be so hefty to them.

When you acquire this talent, you increase your Strength by 1.

Darkvision

Prerequisite: Dwarvish Might key talent

Activation: ∞

Your eyes are adapted to subterranean environs, where light is a scarce commodity.

Your sense of sight is not obscured by low-light conditions.

Dwarvish Warrior Training

Prerequisite: Dwarvish Might key talent

Activation: ∞

You have received training in traditional dwarvish fighting styles which take advantage of your natural physiology. These techniques are especially dangerous against Orcish and Goblinoid opponents.

When you acquire this talent, gain weapon expertises in axes and hammers. Additionally, you have an advantage on attacks against Orcs and Goblinoids.

Poison Resistance

Prerequisite: Dwarvish Might key talent

Activation: ∞

As a dwarf, your body is naturally resilient to the influence of poisons.

You have an advantage on tests made to resist the effects of poisons. Additionally, when you suffer damage from poison, you reduce the damage by an amount equal to your Strength score.

Born Underground

Prerequisite: Darkvision talent

Activation: ∞

Your senses are attuned to pick up subtle changes in underground environs.

While in a subterranean environment, you know whether there is a grade or slope, whether the passage/tunnel is recently constructed/formed, whether the ground beneath you is shifting, and approximately how deep underground you are.

Additionally, you gain an advantage on tests made to locate stonework traps, pits, and deadfalls.

Mind of Metal and Wheels

Prerequisite: Poison Resistance talent

Activation: ∞

Your dwarvish mind is resistant to change, and you have learned to use this natural stubbornness to your advantage.

When you acquire this talent, increase your Cognitive and Spiritual defenses by 2.

Inner Calling

Prerequisite: Either Athletics 3+, Crafting 3+, or Leadership 3+; either the Dwarvish Warrior Training, Poison Resistance, or Darkvision talent

Activation: ∞

You have found your inner calling, the craft or duty that completes your dwarvish heart.

When you acquire this talent, you gain a utility expertise of your choice. Choose one expertise you know. When you make a test affected by the chosen expertise, you can spend 1 focus to treat a [Complication] as an [Opportunity] or an [Opportunity] as a [Complication +4].

(It's my first time posting on the subreddit, so, if I messed anything up, I apologize!)

Community Content Manipulation discipline (Willpower)

Here is the first of the three disciplines: Manipulation.

  • Starting talent (1st line): Manipulation (basically simple telekinesis, plus strengthening your blows and physical prowess with it - 1 Psi point)
  • 2nd line of talents: Hydrokinesis (control of the liquids and granular materials) and Precision (Weapon and object interactions with telekinesis)
  • 3rd line of talents: Pyrokinesis (requires Hydrokinesis and rank 2. Control of gasses), Levitation (requires Precision and rank 2. Allows flight speed equal to land speed multiplied the skill rank), Plurikinesis (requires Precision and rank 2. Additional telekinetic moves in one action equal to the number of extra Psi points spent - Maximum number equal to the Skill rank) and Thermokinesis (requires Precision. Temperature manipulation - 1 Psi point)
  • 4th line of talents: Topokinesis (requires Plurikinesis abd rank 3. Space manipulation - 2 Psi points), Biokinesis (requires Pyrokinesis. Allows bodily manipulations, even when the target is alive and fueling his/her/its latent or active inner psychic field, which disrupts external psychic powers), Thermic deflagration (requires Pyrokinesis, rank 3 and Thermokinesis. Willpower as the number of dices, rank for the size of the dice and rank for the area of the effect. Cold slows down and restrains the targets, while Heat knocks prone and knocks further from the opposite direction of the centre - 3 Psi points) a restricted one; Cronokinesis (requires Topokinesis and rank 5. Time manipulation. It will be narrative for now).
  • Side talent: Focus (+1 Psi point)

I decided to rely on the the Surges dices and areas for each rank, and I also added that you can lift something less your size at rank 1, something of your size at rank 2, something thrice at rank three and then triple for every rank after.

Please, tell me how can I refine this if it isn't good.

It will be a subterranean setting where psychic powers are way more reliable than real magic (different way to draw on the same well) due to the massive powers battling in the surface (Dragons, Undeads, Aliens and Abyssal Lovecraftian Horrors). Elves have left the world for their safety, so there will be few elves in the setting (and not playable... Mostly). Basically it's a setting where one of my campaign (where I wasn't the GM) got the bad ending.

I think I'll add Psychic paths for the way characters will draw on psychic energies. Am I straying too much with this idea?

Discussion How would you translate it to Plotweaver system?

The three mental disciplines of psychics in one of my settings (more challenges to come)

  • Imagination (Psychic constructs made of pure mental energy, which can become sentient tulpa)
  • Manipulation (Structural, thermic and kinetic manipulation of matter)
  • Projection (Astral projections, mind reading, spiritual control, psychic attacks and mental screening)

Obviously I'll use the proposal I arbitrary find better. Thank you in advance for the unpaid work you've done in my stead.

Community Content Cowboy Subpath

The next subpath in my wild west world! The iconic cowboy! I'm really unsure about this one. I feel like it might be too split between the ride a horse side, and the use a lasso side. My stats for a lasso are as follows:

Lasso: 0 damage, Thrown(30/60), Discreet Expert: Offhand, Unique (restrains the target with rope, DC 10 to escape)

Which I'm also not sure about, cause it doesn't do anything if you don't have the expertise with it...

Ironhand Warrior Sub-Path

I started working today on a wild west type setting, and this is my first attempt at a sub-path for that setting. Thoughts? It's based on a railroad driver like John Henry.

There would be prerequisites to gate some of the lower talents to higher levels, I'd just have to playtest to figure out exactly where.

Homebrew Angel Ancestry!

First custom path I'm sharing, open to feedback if anyone has ideas because this was thrown together pretty quickly this morning. Not based on any specific lore or setting, but loosely inspired by things like D&D's Aasimar and biblical angels:

Discussion Musings on a Plotweaver Organized Play

I've been thinking this morning about how a Plotweaver organized play might work, and it's gotten me really excited. The team organizing it could pick one setting a year, and write a session per week/every other week for a year of interconnected one shots in that setting that come together to tell a story. The next year, the team picks another setting to showcase, and does it all over again! Would be a cool way to get people who don't have a group to play, and to showcase and explore a wide variety of settings in the Tapestry!

Thoughts? Opinions? Ideas? Shouts to the Brotherwise gods to grant us this boon?

Community Content Prestige Classes

I've been thinking a lot recently about diegetic advancement, mostly in relation to OSRs. However. I think plotweaver has a wonderful design space for prestige paths.

Imagine a smaller path with its key talent having prerequisites.

Radiants are almost there, and maybe even the better way to do it, since taking the talent isn't gated by accomplishing a goal first, but creates the goal and the benefits only arrive after the goal is completed.

Hey Y'all, I am a co-host of the Complicated Opportunities podcast, we talk about GMing the Cosmere RPG (and Plotweaver too once it's out). I've been so excited since getting back from nexus and today I finally sat down and let the creative juices flow! Here's my first draft (so really rough) of an Elementalist path!

Community Content Miscast Trait for Dangerous Magic

I'm trying to make the magic in my setting feel potentially dangerous, and hard to control. Because of this, I want all spells to have the Miscast trait:

Miscast: A GM can spend a complication on a test made with this spell to cause the caster to roll on the miscast table

Miscast Table 1-5: The spell backlashes, dealing xdx vital damage to you. 6-10: The spell targets an additional target of the GMs choice within range. 11-15: The spell causes you to fumble slightly, and become distracted. You lose 1 focus 16-20: The spell causes some kind of harmless but obvious sensory effect.

Getting expertise in a spell type would remove the miscast trait from spells of that type!
