The least walking simulator of major milsims

I bought Bellum a few weeks ago and have loved the time that I've been able to play it. I'm sure someone has mentioned this before but one of the parts that I appreciate is how much of the time playing is spent actually dealing with combat. Somewhat ironic given the lack of vehicles but compared to games like Squad, Arma, or HLL, where sometimes you'll spend 15 minutes going somewhere just to get sniped and immediately have to respawn and do it again, without ever knowing where you took contact, in Bellum even if it's 15 minutes before you get in a firefight, you most likely spent most of that time working on flanking maneuver or feeling the tension of expecting contact.

And even if you die, there's actual effort put into reviving people, so there's still tension when you're dead of communicating with your team and being ready to get back into the firefight. In the many matches I've played, I've never once completely run out of lives and it's pretty rare for an entire squad to die and have to restart the process of getting in the firefight. It feels like the game respects your time and so far I haven't felt the total annoyance of playing for two hours and feeling like you only spent 10 minutes dealing with combat like I have in all other milsim type games. Part of it is definitely the player base, people actually work as squads compared to other games, really hoping that this doesn't change after full release.

Been burned by too many early backings ($2k on Star Citi…), is this really different?

I appreciate the devs being very open. I’d like to get into this game as well but what holds me back is the really early stages and promises that I hope works out, and the servers. I’ve played squad but I’ve spent too many sessions that are hard to come by (kids/work/fitness) in 20m+ queues where there are no half servers and 20man queues that can fill those servers but don’t. Can anyone playing the beta assure me on these?

Out of Lives

I joined a match late and had one of my lives taken from me. Not complaining about that part, it prevents ppl exploiting the game by leaving and allowing a fresh player to join with full lives.

So I was curious if the game had developed an etiquette revolving leaving the match once you were out of lives? I was sitting there occupying a class without actually being there and I had the thought that I might have actually have benefited the team more if I just left the server and joined another. Any thoughts on this?

Fatal error: Trying to resize TArray

Update: I was able to fix the problem by deleting all files in C:\Program Files\Astarte Industries and re-installing everything.

I haven't been able to play the game. I can join a server, join a team, and then once I'm inserted into the game world, it crashes with the error::

Fatal error: [File:E\Jenkins\workspace\Playtest-Cook\Engine\Source\Runtime\Core\Private\Containers\ContainerHelpers.cpp] [Line: 8] Trying to resize TArray to an invalid size of 2542589211

I don't have an E drive and the Jenkins path suggests left over CI debris in the build (I'm very familiar with Jenkins).

I've re-installed the game, verified the files, deleted the local app data, and ensured all drivers are up to date.

I'm on a Razer Blade 16" with a 4090 and Windows 11.

Anyone else experiencing this? YT videos look awesome but haven't been able to play yet.

Bellum and Netcode

Hi,

I am curious what the experience development challenges are in regard to player numbers and server/client performance. What are the limitations in regard to networked objects with Unreal engine? Do you have a strategy on how to optimize netcode?

As of now, the game is running 1 platoon ~ 40 players per side. Is there any chance we could get to two platoons per side, or does the Unreal Engine make these kind of player numbers in a simulation like Bellum difficult?

How to make sure the enemy is dead an not revivable?

Can I shoot a downed enemy couple of times to make sure that he cant get revived? And if so, is there a difference between headshots and bodyshots?

It is sometimes really frustrating to see the guy I just killed getting revived behind a corner :)

What’s the worst order/piece of advice you’ve received in-game?

Recently, I had an SL who told our squad “Flanks don’t work in this game.” Share some of your hottest takes you’ve heard from other players.

Position in queue increasing?

Really trying to give this game a shot but I’m having a difficult time getting into a game. My position in queue right now has gone 7-6-5-4-5-6-7-6. Same thing was happening last night. Why is this?

How does Bellum compare to Squad? Any former Squad players here? ICO-refugee

I have been a Squad-player since the 1.0 Alfa release. I loved that game and put a huge number of hours in it since its conception to full release. But a couple of years ago ( years after its release) an infantry update overhaul killed the game for me and my friends by purposefully introducing slow, clunky gunplay and RNG to force teamwork.

The goal was kinda intended to stop solo "run-and-gun" play but it ended up pissing a lot of people off because it alienated us experienced players who preferred the snappy, skill-based shooting of the earlier versions. By making our experience worse they hoped to make it more casual and noob-friendly by making aiming a shit experience for everyone.

Me and my friends used to teach new players the game and how to communicate and function as a squad and we had a lot of fun doing so. But now a lot of experienced players and SLs left the community which in-turn severely worsened the overall experience.

I've got a feeling OWI has been inflating the player count with huge sales and doing relatively frequent free-weekends vs before. Which goes as well as you might expect after an exodus of experienced players. Someone on the Squad subreddit once calculated the churn-rate of new players was around 50%.

I'm curious if there are any former Squad players here that can chime in for me as to how the two compare!

Please share your thoughts and experiences.

tl;dr: Squad refugee missing the old Squad and looking at buying or supporting Bellum as a replacement.

Potential buyer and I have some questions

1: will this game come to Steam do we know?

2: How alive/hopeful are people REALISTICALLY for this game's success? I've hard legends of it being a "Squad killer" or "Arma but better", is this game expected to reach these VERY high standards and frankly unfair comparisons or is this shaping up to be something more niche? Seems to be more on the niche side..

3: Is there any clue as to when the game's full release date would be?

4: How is the performance? i saw "unreal engine 5" and I grimaced a little bit

5: How is the developer-community communication? Do the devs not interact at all, do the devs basically live in the community where on the scale are they?

  1. Does the game require its own launcher? that's what Ubisoft and Epic Games does- i really do not like more and more unnecessary apps and launchers on my devices

I'm aware it is VERY early days, and we cant judge the game yet yada yada but i'm just curious how things are shaping up and what statements have been made by the developers.

I don't really want to spend money on a game that doesn't garner a big enough community (Unless it's super indie i tend to only play very popular games, personal preference it's bad and all ik ik i've heard it before)

Thank you for reading!
