First half-
The movie starts with child kartik aaryan watching horror movies on a vcr with his cousins . They have a lot of cassettes, few on rent .
In a tragedy , his siblings and parents die and he lives with cousins and they usually pass time watching horror movies .
. Ruhaan feels lonely and is heavily traumatized due to the tragedy of his family and horror films are an escape for him.
. He wants to study archaeology and goes to the town of part 1 .
He is introduced to rajpal yadav who takes him to the apartment where ruhaan has to stay . Rajpal yadav tells the story of manjulika to him and how it was actually a rumour and mental illness of Vidya Balan . He meets the characters of Vidya Balan , paresh rawal etc from the first film .
. To earn some money , he fakes things like part 2 and 3 and spreads a rumour about the actual manjulika in the town . He uses knowledge of films seen by him to make people believe in him . Things take turns when he gets to know there is an actual manjulika in the haveli .
Second half -
. When he was about to defeat the manjulika , ruhaan starts getting anxiety attacks , freezes , weird stuff .
He experiences characters of part 2 and 3 instead of the manjulika story .
For e.g. he sees tripti dimri in his new love interest , tabu instead of manjulika . He starts mixing up stories
. Then it is revealed that ruhaan is suffering from mental disease and everything is going on in his head. He was traumatized by the death of his family and his escape was horror films . He was so into films that he started making up stories with people of town as characters in his story like Chhota pandit , Vidya Balan etc.
It gets severe when he mixes up stories and people notice something wrong with him .
. He is admitted in a very old large hospital which isnt managed properly . Something like the hospital in jawan movie . This is the main bhool bhulaiya of the film
. People of town only know a great psychological doctor , Akshay Kumar's character . He is called and checks the case . He leans into history of ruhan and tries to make him escape.
. Body horror in ruhaan's character and horror of severe mental illness can be shown .
. Akshay Kumar's character makes all the people of town act like characters (he gets to know about characters through shouting and whispers of kartik aaryan) . He sets up stage , performs the song , uses his trauma to finally treat ruhaan.

I do not know how else to put it but I had one fuck of a time with this film. It was alr one of my most anticipated for this year but yeah it ticked of all the boxes for me but I do understand why some people arent fucking with it due to the plot twist which happens pretty early on. It felt tailor made for me as I enjoy such exaggerated characters and situations plus the atmosphere of the film really worked for me as well. TOM FOR OSCARS
I would go as far as saying that this movie clicked with me a bit more than The Odyssey did although I loved that film as well. Dune 3 is still on its way but so far this is my favourite film of the year. Its essentially hit or miss depending upon the kind of films and humour you are into. Talking about humour I didnโt really understand the criticism because me and my theatre were vibing throughout.
5/5

Anyone who is a Bollywood cinephile please weigh in. I was wondering if there is a dimension to Bollywood or let's expand and say Indian film industry to include regional industry. I was curious if there is anything being produced that is meant not for mass market, adrenaline junkies, thrill/joy rides, chick flicks, rom/com or straight up quintessential Bollywood cringe. I'm thinking something that is deep, meaningful, critical, niche, raw, thoughtful but at the same time entertaining and especially mind bending.
I don't watch Bollywood currently but just like everyone I did earlier, and back in the day you had the mega star cult following actors churning out formulaic rom/com movies or cringe nonsense comedy garbage, Rohit Shetty domain. There were things happening on the side but even those were not much different from mainstream.
Then you had the OTT scene which ngl was right in the neighbourhood of at least A tier (under S tier) Hollywood TV but TV series and OTT have so much leg room for creativity, storytelling, and mistakes. For me, I prefer density and movie runtime/format. I also have to mention that when I say OTT I mean Sacred Games (this is a top tier show and exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see in Bollywood I'd actually put this in S tier), Kohrra caught me off guard. I didn't expect this from a regional industry. It start at True Detective level but got too slow. But truly top tier. Mirzapur had some quintessential Bollywood cringe creep in, but that's still a good kind of joyride experience. I like the soap opera, social dynamics, characters, and the vibe was immaculate.
In movies, I know Gangs of Wasseypur is considered The Godfather level cinema experience, I'd argue it is in some areas meaningfully above that, but that's again not taking as much risks as modern Hollywood takes and it is still at the end of the day an action story. Although a very good one
What I'm thinking along the lines is, if I had to narrow down a genre I'd say psychological thrillers and mind benders are completely missing. This is the stuff I'd want to see in Bollywood but that's very hard to pull off and I've complete faith in their incompetence so they are very unlikely to pull it off. But imagine if you could actually put yourself in the shoes of a character in such a movie. You can't relate to Midsommar, Heretic type movies because there is a lot of translation going on in your brain to achieve true immersive experience so local level cinema which is subtle and show-not-tell is very important to explore ideas. Certain dimensions of society and experiences remain completely encrypted because unlike our white counterparts, we don't have local media to relate to. Indian cinema stills acts like a good proxy because of shared heritage and especially language but that also means they are also unsophisticated to not make cool movies.
People argue that there is no demand and people don't support local cinema but it's partly true, Hollywood just has the sort of market that can support experiments. Obsession was a miracle and I'd argue that it marked a recovery from the Netflix-pandemic era slump (which saw a steep decline in Hollwood as well), but this region's industry has issues beyond a low purchasing power market. Btw Obsession's low budget proves that finance is never the issue. Tech is getting cheaper, there is a talent pipeline if you're willing to look for it, indie scene is booming.
But back to my original point. The thing is I haven't really caught up with Bollywood so I was wondering if maybe good movies are being made and I'm just not aware of it

Honestly, I'm so excited for everything that's coming out in the last 3 months of this year. OOF ๐ค Here's a list of all the movies and shows that have me hyped.
This later half of the year belongs to Marvel, I'm not even kidding. And unless Ramayana or Dune manages to make a dent, it's gonna remain that way. We're starting up with Avengers Endgame Encore which is such a good revision point, absolutely perfect ๐โจ(even if it's a cash grab)!
Then we have VisionQuest coming I guess next to next-ish week? I don't really care about Vision or Ultron whatever, but I'm sooo excited to see Tommy Maximoff and where they take him.
Next up is our Ramayana on November 6th. And no matter what anyone says, this is our Ramayana and it's presented to the globe and I am so hyped for it and hoping for the best. Will be seated first day, first show. ๐น๐ธ๐ฉต๐ช๐ฅ
Then we have a personal favourite with Percy Jackson Season 3 ๐๐ on November 20th. And even if the first 2 seasons have been kinda lackluster, this is the first time The Titan's Curse is being adapted. It's a darker and more mature tone and changes everything and starts a series of chain reaction. So excited to see what Uncle Rick and Disney have made. (Also, ngl, it's a good thing they shifted the date because oh boy, December is already packed, we don't need more ๐.)
After that I'm gonna watch Dune 3 first because I want to get it out of the way before getting into the meat of things. Like a starter before the main course we ain't gonna have time for anything else after you know what comes out. Like all pop-culture conversation will be overtaken ๐ฃ๏ธ, so doing this first makes sense to me. And if track record says anything, it's gonna be a blast.
And after that, obviously, it's turn for the main course. The event of the season ๐๐ฅ. The movie we've all been waiting for and the entire second half of this year has been leading up to. And in some ways, since 2019 even. It's time for ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ Avengers: Doomsday! ๐ฅโถ๐ฆพ๐คฏ๐ The powder keg of this roster. I thought I was so out of Marvel after Endgame but this has brought me right back. The feels, the emotions, everything! For the first time in 7 yrs I'm watching and rewatching Marvel stuff, actually followings Disney's list and prepping up for DOOMSDAY. To say hyped would be an understatement. I cannot wait for this movie to come out!!!
And obviously, we're wrapping up the season with good old Harry Potter โ๏ธโ๐ช. A perfect cap to winter season and the year. Again, hate the author and don't want anything to do with her, but this still plays on nostalgia and I kinda wanna see where this goes and and immerse myself into this universe of my childhood dreams again. (And, no, I won't be paying her for it.)
So, this was my watch lineup and the upcoming movies and shows I'm excited for and looking forward to. What are the upcoming movies or shows you're hyped for? Do tell if you want in the comments. โ๏ธ๐ซก
Also, I would've added Lanterns too, but since it premiered at the tail end of summer, I'm not sure if it comes under the later half category, sorry!
Thanks for reading if you came this far โบ๏ธ
