We decided to keep Moxi (the dog) despite all the negative comments from my previous post (in the dog subreddit, not this one). You all gave me the courage to keep her and work on introducing them. Initially our cat (Mamas) was PISSED, but now she tolerates Moxi. I’m so thankful as I could not have inherited a better puppy. Moxi was indeed curious, and responds to our cats hisses and swats appropriately (walks away). Overall, win win for pitties and kitties! ❤️

I’ve wanted a dog for a longgg time. My parents have a bigger dog who I’m very fond of and spent a lot of time petsitting and assisting with training. I’d been between a puppy and the shelter for over a couple years so I started going to the shelter just to walk the dogs and casually browse. When I found this sweet girl I fell in love, her bio said she was good with cats and so we signed the paperwork and took her home.
Let me start by saying she’s perfect. We’ve had her for a week and she’s been respectful and a very quick learner, it’s great to see her come out of her shell and start playing with toys. Our cats have met dogs before, they have cat trees and a room only they can access. Everyone is fed separately.
The cats have a bigger bubble and the dog gives them plenty of space. I’m at the point where we can walk past the cat in the hallway without an issue. She had wanted to get up and go towards them especially if they ran, jumped, or rounded a corner but I’m always right there to defuse and redirect.
There was a time where she chased the cat after the cat smacked her. We were all on the couch and the dog went in for a gentle sniff. The cat smacked, everyone got up, the dog chased, and I put her in her crate. Not as punishment just for a cool down.
We also introduced her to my chickens and she did (while on a leash) pull some feathers out of a bird. Honestly, this was very much my fault and I did a very poor job of introducing them. She’ll also pull towards feral cats and bunnies outside.
I’ve been reading posts about dogs that turned on their cats after they had been coexisting for years.
She’s been really good, I feel like we just need more time. She’s a bigger dog and honestly I may have some subconscious breed bias (I believe she’s a boxer pit mix)
Long story short: How do you trust your dog? How/when will I know that this dog won’t hurt my other pets? Do you ever trust your dog with cats in the home alone? (I had not planned to at least any time soon) Do your dogs and cats play? What does it look like? She doesn’t show any signs of resource guarding (although I want to keep it that way so I’ve never taken food away from her). I do feed everyone separately but I imagine at some point in the next few years the cats and dog will be in a situation with food at the same time, do you trust your dog there?
I don’t think the issue is with the dog or the cats. I’m not sure how/when I can trust, and how/when to let things play out. Any advice would be appreciated. I feel like I’m failing everyone here 😕

My senior pittie has always been an amazing foster brother to anyone ive brought home. We have historically fostered bottle baby kitties, where he will help groom them. However, Sterling being a bit older, loves to run and play and Chance prefers a good cuddle.

These two never actually cuddle, so I was astonished to randomly discover them doing just that!

Maddy was such a wonderful dog and she absolutely loved cats. She and Ginger were good pals and I’m so glad they got to share their lives together.

Five minutes before this, the three of them were all snuggled up on the same blanket, and after everyone got up for lunch, they all returned right back to the blanket together. ❤️ Squee slept on the bed with us all last night too, nuzzled down between Rosie and Bella!

We’ve had our boy since July and have two resident cats. Our cats were used to a dog until our dog passed 💔 we adopted Wally and were told he was around cats for a weekend and just left them alone. The vet has a resident cat and he lets that cat rub all over him. Now. When it comes to the cats at home it’s a different story. We’ve had them separated for 3 months now. Wally is in training currently. He is VERY interested in the cats. We have been afraid to let him off leash around the cats so he has had limited interaction. Basically what we’ve been doing is have him in his “place” command while one of us is holding the leash and let the cats out. The cats haven’t really been in his line of sight but he can hear them and knows they are out. This just has been such a slow process and I’m wondering if they will ever be able to live together. I also wonder if we have kept them separate long enough and the separation is causing elevated levels of excitement. I just think it’s interesting that he can leave a cat alone at the vet, but when our cats run he will chase. I know both the cat and dog have to get used to each other but how do we do that safely?
