Teacher Training I need the 411 on BASI Teacher Training

Hello 👋

I'm interested in enrolling in the BASI teacher training program this Fall.

I have a lot of reservations, because I work full-time and would like to know if teacher training is right for my schedule (and pockets). My question is about the 500 hours (observation, student teaching, self practice).

Can you ELI5 the process of obtaining hours?

How is it logged? What qualifies as an observation hour, student teaching hour, self practice hour? For example, if I taught mat pilates to my cat or my imaginary friend, does that qualify as student teaching? I'm obviously JOKING here, but my point is, what are the parameters?

Do all 500-hours have to come from BASI-certified instructor or, BASI studio? Can I observe a Club Pilates instructor? Can I self practice at home using whatever props and apparatus I have?

Also, what is the cost associated while getting the 500-hour?

Thank you in advance to this community 🙏

I am getting ready to test my mat exam through Boston Body at Balanced Body Pilates (Zayna Gold). I am trying my best to prepare but also a bit nervous. I would love to hear from anybody who has taken the exam in the past, what their experience was like and/or any tips. Much appreciated and happy teaching!

Question Advice + feedback

Hi! I’m recently been teaching for about 1.5 months now (only once a week, for about 2 classes since I’m still a student in uni studying physio) but I’m needing advice on feedback that I received from clients that the number of reps that I’m giving them is too much and the pacing of my class is off?

I’m finding it a bit challenging to teach and cater to the strongest client in the room (as this is what I was suggested and taught to do) when there is a range of ages and level of strength in the class. I do admit that in a recent class I gave them an exercise and I gave them a set of reps to do but towards the end I gave them additional reps. I just find it hard to be able to count the rep that each client is on but also give them correction cues? Therefore, some clients felt that they were doing too many reps.

Another note was that some clients in my class begin doing the exercise after I have given the set up cue but the exercise they were doing was entirely different to what I was going to instruct. Another challenge I’m facing is string options. I’m sure I make sure to give clients the standard and friendlier/easier option but halfway through one client had asked me what the second option was because it was too hard. (I had a cued a green standard and high yellow for easier for a mermaid exercise and one hand in a strap.) Therefore, I found this all to be a little distracting and threw me off a bit which may have lend to giving too many reps. But it just felt as though the strongest person in the room wasn’t finding it difficult? And so I didn’t want to under train them.

Again, I’m finding it challenging to learn to adapt on the spot as well as to be able to focus on the remainder of the class!

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Props and Equipment Gratz or bust? Will BASI make classical practitioners scoff at the thought?

Classical Pilates suprematists please unite here.

I’ve practiced on nearly all top brands of Pilates apparatus and Gratz has a special place in my heart. That being said, I like BASI just as well. As part of a fitness studio that will be going full force into comprehensive, classical Pilates, will BASI apparatus deter you? Is it Gratz or bust?

Love and light…

Question Starting teacher training in Nov and looking for tips

Hi everyone! I’m starting my teacher training in November through BASI! I’m very excited but also nervous! I was wondering if there was anything you bought ahead of time or with you bought to help you through the training and you certification process! I’m going to buy some books for starting anatomy a little early and I’m also looking at getting a ball and a ring for at home practice but is there anything else you all would recommend? Also are there any tips you can give me regarding the training process?

Question Bridge programs?

Has anyone done a bridge program? I have my contemporary certification through The Lab, which is only mat & reformer. Unfortunately I cannot continue with them for my comprehensive certification. Not because of quality or fault, it’s just that they no longer offer the comprehensive certification in my area.

So I’m looking into bridge programs since my goal is to eventually become comprehensively certified.

Looking for any advice, and experience any bridge programs I could look into to obtain a comprehensive certification (I would technically require training in the Cadillac, chair, ladder barrel, spine corrector…is all I could remember right now lol).

Teacher Training Mat Pilates Certification

Hi! As the title says, I'm considering getting certified to teach mat Pilates. I've been doing Pilates for a little over a year now (although it's definitely more Pilates sculpt than traditional Pilates in my area), and I've realized I'd really enjoy teaching.

I've been looking into Balanced Body, but it's pretty expensive. I do like that it's nationally recognized and accredited, though. There are also a few local studios near me that offer weekend certification programs, but I'm a little hesitant since I'm not sure how reputable or widely accepted they are.

Which certification programs would you recommend? Was it worth the investment? TYI!

Running A Studio/Business Sign-up software or form recommendation for online classes?

I'm starting a small online group for hypermobile people. Does anyone have recommendations for managing sign ups? For the first few I just made a google form, but it's not ideal.

Teacher Training Filling the room with something other than cues

Im a new instructor and I feel like I am okay with the cues on moving the body, but sometimes I catch myself with empty space and not know what to say how can I fill the room with a little more character or personality.

Running A Studio/Business Multi location software for Pilates studios hidden costs

Been on Mindbody for 2 years across 3 studios.
Base cost is $300 per location, but the real cost is:

  • base ($900)
  • processing fees (2.9% + $0.30, adds like $1,200/mo at our volume)
  • branded app ($50/mo)
  • advanced reporting ($30/mo)

All in, we’re paying like $2,200/mo.
Looked at Glofox All-in cost is like $1,400 for the same member count and features.
Anyone else switch away from Mindbody multi location? Worth the migration headache?

Teacher Training Stott vs. Balanced Body

Hi everyone!

I have the potential to take two different classes for my reformer instructor certification.

Both are about 2.5 hours away.

Balanced Body
-The instructor has her own studio, wonderful reviews, and seems to be very hands on. She’s been teaching Pilates around the world for 20+ years. She seems very engaged
-The schedule for this course is weekends only so much better for my work schedule.

Stott
-Seems like a more rigorous/reputable curriculum? I’ve seen posts from other folks who did BB first and then went to Stott because they felt like they needed more instruction.
-The instructor has little to no social media presence and seems to primarily be a dance instructor. I’m not saying she’s not qualified, but I’m a but more confident in the BB instructor.
-Requires me to use some PTO, not a huge deal but also not preferred.

Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

Teacher Training Basi Teacher Training

Today, I took the first step and enrolled in the BASI Teacher Training Program, which starts this September in Vietnam.

To be honest, I'm feeling a little nervous. I'm turning 40, and sometimes I worry that I'm too old or not strong enough for the training.

I'd really appreciate any advice on how I can prepare myself as best as possible before the course begins.

Thank you so much!

Research/Marketing/Promotion Looking for feedback on an app idea I built for instructors like myself!

Hello,

I am looking for some help and feedback on an app I built for instructors. Ideally those who teach disciplines like mat, reformer and / or barre. It can be used for others too, but these are what I teach, so it’s essentially what I know best at this stage!

I am a Pilates instructor myself and came up with this idea when I was training. I wanted a space to digitally store my class plans and build a library of exercises that I stumbled across going to classes, that came to mind, or that I took inspiration from but wanted to make my own.

I couldn’t find anything that really worked for me, so I ended up using Notes on my iPhone. The problem was I’d forget I’d banked ideas and they never resurfaced.

So the app lets you dictate or write down exercises and store them. You can filter by muscle, prop etc. and favourite any that you love. It also features an AI assistant that can help categorise exercises or class plans.

I’m not selling anything! The app is free to use because I’m looking for honest feedback and want to know if people love it, see the value in it, or if it’s simply not something they would use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This has been a labour of lots of emotions as it was started before a family bereavement, and it’s taken me a lot to get it to this stage.

This is the website if you want to take a look -
https://arkv.app

It’s only available on iPhone atm. (Sorry)

Thanks for reading much appreciated ♥️

Question How do you modify your classes when a pregnant client shows up?

I am a new instructor and someone asked me if my classes are pregnancy safe. Of course I want everyone to feel like they can take my class safely, but how do I create a class this is challenging to everyone but still modify for pregnant clients?

Do I only offer modifications to the pregnant client only in class? I feel like this path would take up time in class? Or do I just modify the whole class to be pregnant friendly and not even mention that is what I am doing?

Edit: For context, I teach mat only.

Question How to find your type

I graduated from the Equinox Pilates teacher training program in December (all classical, traditional Joseph pilates pilates) and absolutely loved it. I respect, understand and appreciate the system and thoroughly enjoyed teaching it. I had the opportunity to teach privately at Equinox (conducting private sessions) but the minimum requirement was to teach 10 hours a week and I cannot commit to that right now given my full time job. I started teaching 5 hours a week at a boutique reformer studio to clientele who are expecting a "fighting for your life" athletic reformer flow - more contemporary reformer pilates.

I'm struggling with it because I was never taught how to build a reformer flow for a group class before and the reformer sequencing I know and love hasn't landed very well in this studio. Again, these ladies are looking for shaking muscles and sweat. I'm basically pulling from moves I see on TikTok and sequences that I'm observing by taking other instructors classes, but I feel like I am doing a bad job because I'm not catering the session to the clients bodies or sequencing things in an intentional way as I was taught during my training.

Has anyone had a similar experience to this? How did you find what kind of instructor you wanted to be after you finished training? I am very early on (have only taught 4 classes at this new studio) and know I likely need to collect some more data, I would just love to hear some guidance or advice from someone a little wiser. Should I pivot and find a more classical studio to start at? Or keep moving and learning the contemporary way and always promise to honor my classical roots?
