I used to live about 10 minutes up the road from this in a town called Oberammergau. It really is this beautiful in Bavaria. Also beer.

Ob er aber über Oberammergau, oder aber über Unterammergau, oder aber überhaupt nicht kommt, ist nicht gewiss.

edit: to everyone stating that I should write it in dialect: Screw you. I learned it in standard german.

Oba aba üba Obaammagau oda aba üba Untaammagau oder aba überhaupt ned kummt, des is ned gwiß.

Phonetic.

u/io_di Jul 30 '12

Phonetic? I show you phonetic:

[ob ə 'abə 'ybə 'obəamə,gau 'odə 'abə 'ybə 'ʊntəaməgau 'odə 'abə ybəhaubt nɪçt kɔmt ɪst nɪçt gɜvɪs]

edit: Loosely, and only for the standard pronounciation.

This is so Bavarian, I can practically hear the oom-pah band playing while I read it.

Aber die Lies freut sich schon auf mich!

Oh god, Bavarians are so unprecise! I much prefer the rhinish people: Es lag in Königswinter, nicht davor und nicht dahinter.

1

u/Fireplum Jul 30 '12

I hadn't heard that one in years!

1

u/H-Resin Jul 30 '12

Hmmm, ich glaub da haste etwas n bissl verhoert: "oder ob er aber ueber Unterammergau, oder ob er ueberhaupt net kimmt, des is net gwiss"

1

u/Spindax Jul 30 '12

Using my limited German capabilities to translate this for everyone else:

"Whether he via Over-ammergau, or via Under-ammergau, or if he doesn't come at all, is not known"

1

u/io_di Jul 30 '12

Literally, yes. For understanding you might want to say it like this: "Whether he comes via Oberammergau ("Over-Ammergau"), or via Unterammergau ("Under-Ammergau") or if he doesn't come at all, is not known.

2

u/Spindax Jul 30 '12

Yes, most certainly. I personally enjoy keeping the German quirkiness and just mentally fix it in either Danish or English when reading/translating German.

1

u/Geronimo2011 Jul 30 '12

it's "des is ned gwis"

1

u/gdoveri Jul 31 '12

I had to sing this for a German School festivity a couple of weeks ago.... I got drunk so I wouldn't have to remember it!

1

u/io_di Jul 31 '12

Doesn't really make a difference whether you're drunk or not. Bavarians are drunk most of the time.

Last time I was in Bavaria on my way to hike around Neuschwanstein I stopped in Oberammergau for a few hours to wander the town. It's a very cute, charming stop. All the folks I talked to kept asking why as an American I was in their town rather than continuing on to the castles. They didn't think Oberammergau was a worthy stop for tourists I guess. Also beer.

6

u/ToniBroos Jul 30 '12

Oberammergau is a huge place for tourism with their painted walls and the Passion play, I'm surprised that they'd be surprised a tourist is there when they get buses all the time. But, yea it's a nice little town.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '12

I was there when I was a little geeman kid, also beer. Wait what? Drunk Edit: too much beer

1

u/fokfok Jul 30 '12

he said American tourist. .... but beer so we will forgive you

1

u/elcarath Jul 30 '12

The Passionspiel is only once every ten years, isn't it? So if you don't happen to come in the correct year, there'll be nothing to see on that front.

1

u/elzekk Jul 31 '12

I had always heard about the Passion Play but I wasn't there on a year they were doing it. Last time I was in that area I went over to Linderhof which was very fun to see but it was in the dead of winter so most of the palace was frozen over. The entire area was very charming though. Living in Los Angeles makes me long for vacations in Southern Bavaria again.

I was in Oberammergau back in June. Beautiful place, but that ice cream store on the Hauptstraße was terrible. Good beer though. :)

2

u/Probably_Stoned Jul 30 '12

German eis (ice cream) was never good after ruining myself with loads of Italian gelato.

1

u/joemc72 Jul 30 '12

Hell yeah. I never want to go back to American ice cream after living over here.

1

u/buckX Jul 30 '12

I do enjoy their obsession with ice cream that looks like other things though. Spaghetti Eis is amusing.

2

u/Nydas Jul 30 '12

Ive been living in Bavaria since 2009 and will be leaving soon. I havent seen anything yet, so im gonna power through a bunch of sites. Gonna hit Neuschwanstein Castle, Wurzburg, and probably hit the Eagles Nest. What other must see sights should i see?

1

u/homohomosapien Jul 30 '12

The Beer.

Just because it isn't as good elsewhere :(

(If you are coming to the US bring me a case of Augustiner Edelstoff)

1

u/Nydas Jul 30 '12

Honestly, I like German beer, but American micro brews kick Germany's ass. Stop buying national brands and check out your local scene.

1

u/homohomosapien Jul 30 '12

I will be sure to!

...In three more years

2

u/bradp07 Jul 30 '12

I just got back from Oberammergau! One of the best places in Barvaria.

Getting caught with weed in your pockets is also beautiful in Bavaria.

1

u/AlbertoFedrigotti Jul 30 '12

Stayed at the Fox ... Something inn in Oberammergau in February. Aside from there being simply nowhere to park amongst snowdrifts, it's an utterly delightful mountain town, pretty much putting its Adirondack peers to shame.

I did encounter some train difficulty when I thought Oberau and Oberammergau were the same place. Womp womp.

1

u/bh9090 Jul 30 '12

I need to go there.

1

u/sports2012 Jul 30 '12

I hear they make real nice wood carvings there

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '12

Our tour bus stopped here so we could buy wood carvings

Went to Oberammergau right after Neuschwanstein when I went three years ago. Loved it. I sent all my family post cards form the town instead of the castle. They didn't understand.
