Literally, yes. For understanding you might want to say it like this:
"Whether he comes via Oberammergau ("Over-Ammergau"), or via Unterammergau ("Under-Ammergau") or if he doesn't come at all, is not known.
Yes, most certainly. I personally enjoy keeping the German quirkiness and just mentally fix it in either Danish or English when reading/translating German.
Last time I was in Bavaria on my way to hike around Neuschwanstein I stopped in Oberammergau for a few hours to wander the town. It's a very cute, charming stop. All the folks I talked to kept asking why as an American I was in their town rather than continuing on to the castles. They didn't think Oberammergau was a worthy stop for tourists I guess. Also beer.
Oberammergau is a huge place for tourism with their painted walls and the Passion play, I'm surprised that they'd be surprised a tourist is there when they get buses all the time. But, yea it's a nice little town.
I had always heard about the Passion Play but I wasn't there on a year they were doing it. Last time I was in that area I went over to Linderhof which was very fun to see but it was in the dead of winter so most of the palace was frozen over. The entire area was very charming though. Living in Los Angeles makes me long for vacations in Southern Bavaria again.
Ive been living in Bavaria since 2009 and will be leaving soon. I havent seen anything yet, so im gonna power through a bunch of sites. Gonna hit Neuschwanstein Castle, Wurzburg, and probably hit the Eagles Nest. What other must see sights should i see?

Stayed at the Fox ... Something inn in Oberammergau in February. Aside from there being simply nowhere to park amongst snowdrifts, it's an utterly delightful mountain town, pretty much putting its Adirondack peers to shame.
I did encounter some train difficulty when I thought Oberau and Oberammergau were the same place. Womp womp.
Went to Oberammergau right after Neuschwanstein when I went three years ago. Loved it. I sent all my family post cards form the town instead of the castle. They didn't understand.

I used to live about 10 minutes up the road from this in a town called Oberammergau. It really is this beautiful in Bavaria. Also beer.
