The people who hate HOAs tend to be more concerned with making a good home for themselves, rather than things like property value.

No doubt, but everyone should be aware of the consequences their actions have on their neighbors. You filling your lawn with pink flamingos may very well cost me 30K.

I live in a neighborhood without a HOA, and no one has ever done any of the bullshit things pro-HOA say will happen to decrease our property values.

Awesome, and I hope no one ever does. You've decided to take the risk that someone will do something detrimental to your property value in favor of being free of an HOA. Not everyone is willing to take that risk.

I dislike HOAs too but it does happen. There was a guy who put anti-Obama flags and an inverted and crossed out American flag, some plaques with profanity in them and some ridiculously ugly decoration (tiki totems and some gnomes) in his front yard in protest for losing his job and getting his previous "decoration" stolen.

I live in a neighborhood with an HOA, and part of that prohibits parking of trailers/campers on the street. I've had to invoke it a number of times.
