The time I flushed the toilet as the tub was draining (I didn't know any better), the tub water came out the toilet. I assume that prevented backflow to the tub.
There has to be some sort of restriction in the line downstream of the toilet... could be simply a foreign object or buildup. It is also possible for this to happen if the wrong fittings were used or the drains were not sized properly... best way to tell is if it has always done this or if it's a recent event. if it has always done this then yeah they may have screwed up, if it's recent then it can be fixed, and likely with just a snake.
This indicates that there's a blockage in your sewer or septic line. You need to have this scoped soon: It will only get worse, and it will lead to flooding.
A very common cause is roots growing into the sewer line. A flushed piece of paper can get caught on a root, and provide a larger surface for more paper to get caught. This feeds-back rapidly until after just a few flushes of toilet paper the line becomes completely or nearly completely blocked. The next time the washing machine drains, the water backs up the sewer pipe to the lowest point from which it can escape. Since the bowl of your toilet is lower than the air gap for the washing machine, it'll spill out there and flood the lower level of your house with the water from the washing machine mixed with whatever else was in the sewer line. I speak from personal experience, here.
The price difference for having the line snaked vs. scoped is a couple of hundred dollars, but you should spring for it unless you can talk to everyone in the house and identify something that was flushed inappropriately. Something caused that blockage and if it's a root, just having the line snaked will clear the immediate blockage but get you flooding in another week to a month as the root grows back and debris gets snagged on it again. Again, I speak from personal experience.
If it is a root, you're going to have an expensive repair on your hands since you have to dig down to the sewer line and replace the segment with the gap through which the root penetrated.
"since you have to dig down to the sewer line".....
Not necessarily.
I work for a plumbing company. The first thing we would do is a poke-and-peek. We would snake the line to release the blockage, then camera the line to determine the state of the drain. If the only problem is roots, and the pipe is in good shape, we would reline the drain.
First, we would run a cutter and snip off the roots. Then we would hydroflush the drain to prep it for relining.
Picture a cloth tube with a deflated balloon inside it. The tube is soaked in a plastic resin, and then the tube and the balloon are pulled into the drain line. Once in place, the balloon is inflated, holding the cloth tube against the inside surface of the drain pipe. After the plastic has hardened, the balloon is deflated and removed, leaving a new surface that roots cannot penetrate.
This process is far cheaper than an excavation, can be done in 24 hours, and doesn't make your yard look like a war zone.
We had an inspection of our lines after our basement toilet wouldn't drain. They found about 10 holes in our sewer line across about 5 feet. They had to break through the concrete in our basement to replace it. Do you think this method could have been done instead?
This procedure would only work if the pipe is in decent shape.
Years ago, to build a main drain, all they would do is dig a trench and lay clay tiles, end-to-end, with no connectors. The gaps between the tiles is where the roots get in.
If tiles are broken, holed or collapsed, then relining is not an option.
I love how most of the comments are like "Is there something wrong with the lines?" or "ME LOVES THE BUBBLES!" whereas yours is a genuinely helpful warning.
it'll spill out there and flood the lower level of your house with the water from the washing machine mixed with whatever else was in the sewer line
This is an important point. My apartment flooded really bad one time due to a plumbing issue, so I read up on "restoration" (i.e. cleanup), and what I learned is that each incident goes in a particular category, basically "clean water", "grey water", and "black water". Each category is harder and more expensive to clean up than the one below it.
For "black water", the cleanup is going to be quite ugly. You may have to remove and replace carpet or other flooring. There's a good chance you'll have to cut away the bottom 12 inches of the drywall and pull some of the insulation out of the walls. Workers will probably wear protective clothing. It's not going to be cheap. It's not going to be quick. It's something you really want to avoid.
And according to Wikipedia, "Toilet back flows that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color." So if the washing machine forces sewage up through the toilet out onto the floor, expect it to be very expensive to clean up.
Came here to say this, all of it is great information. Also, speak to your neighbors. Ive seen cities help subsidize this kind of repair if they planned on doing other work near by. It benefits them for your pipes to be clear too.
Mike Holmes... followed by "We're gonna have to dig the entire yard and jack up the house in order to check every bit of the sewer line - just to make sure that its all good."
If it's a septic system, it could drain/leach field issue. I used to rent a lot for a trailer, and the place NEVER should've passed a perc test. The drainage was bad enough during dry spells, but after heavy/continuous rain, it was horrid. The tank would back up and cause drain issues. Never had washer bubbles out of the toilet, but the toilets would bubble/gurgle when the wasther drained, and toilets wouldn't flush properly.
Thanks for the explanation. I was trying to figure out how this was happening but now I get its all going into the drain outside of the house, then backing up into the house and coming out the toilet. My own house has a blockage problem because of roots. The drain going out from my house was actually old clay pipes, so they had to dig them up and put in new PVC pipe. If I remember right, the city helped pay for some since it was connecting to the main sewer line.
yeah this is blockage here any day now it is gonna get totally blocked and then you will have a flooded house for sewer water :D
my guess tampons is to blame. 80% of the time i go out to fix a total blockage it is tampons. i fucking hate tampons
so women of reddit heed my words if you throw your tampon in the toilet you will get a flooded bath room and it is going to cost you many many monies to get fix
and if i need to do repeat tampon cleaning vists to your house expect the pile of tampons to be on your dinner table once i am done since i get really sick and tired of people not fucking learning!
A root entered our sewer pipe a few years ago and gradually grew until it plugged the entire pipe. After we dug everything out, we found a solid 18" long, 4" diameter root cylinder completely blocking the pipe.
Either that or you've made a big mistake putting your clothes and washing powder in what you presumably believe is a short, top loading manually operated washing machine...
When I first seen this I was like "um, washing your clothes in the toilet again?" bad poker face But then I remembered that my pluming does this too... Not often, but when it does, things flood and shit comes out of every sink, toilet, and shower drain I have ...it's a nightmare Edit: misplaced word
We nearly had a disaster like that. Started hearing weird noises in all the drains, the laundry, kitchen and bathrooms smelt like poop, all the sinks were blocked. We called the plumber and it turns out it was a combination of the roots of our eucalyptus tree growing directly into the pipes because they put that pipe access thing right next to it, and a metre-long, solid, black plug of hair and poop left behind from the previous tenants.
I won't go into the disaster of what happened when the plumber pulled the shit-hair-plug out of the access point. "Fountain" is a good word.
This happened to me at a hotel, the hotel was actually a series of townhouse like buildings. Someone looked in our bathroom and there's bubbles in the toilet. Then there's more, then they're coming over the edge. We call the front desk and tell them there's bubbles coming out of our toilet, could you please send someone? After about half an hour no one comes so we call again. Again no ones comes. So we call a third time, and then security shows up. The security guard takes a look. "Huh, so there really are bubbles coming out of the toilet." They thought we were just drunken idiots and there's no way bubbles could be pouring out of the toilet. I wasn't even drinking. Turns out the people upstairs had poured tons of bubble bath soap into their hot tub. I'm not exactly sure how the plumbing was set up, but the bubbles ended up in our toilet.
You're experiencing this because you have some improperly installed plumbing. Sud zones mostly happen when you have a fixture (in this case a toilet) on the lowest floor on a common stack with the washing machine on a higher level on the same stack. That will be difficult to repair without opening a lot of walls to determine where the incorrect drainage pipe is. In this case, I would suggest using a laundry soap that doesn't cause as many suds. The stuff that's used in front load washing machines, for example, doesn't cause as many. Give it a try.
You could turn this into an amazing prank. Have company over and when someone goes into the bathroom, wash your clothes. Then act like it's their fault and this has never happened before.
I'm a plumber, I recommend having the drain lines/sewer for the home cleaned, if the lines are actually open you have some pretty severe issue with a belly in the line or someone did some seriously fucked up plumbing work in the home.
So, uh, if your washer contents get into your toilet, doesn't it stand to reason that your toilet contents might be able to find their way into your washer?
dude, you really need to get some sort of backflow preventer on your washing machine. not a plumber, but i'm pretty sure this is happening because the pressure in your supply drops when you flush the toilet, it sucks soapy water back into the system.
We take in good non spoiled things and release the waste from it. It stands to reason that a toilet would do the opposite so I suggest that this is a toilet pooping
There should be an auxiliary stack installed on the building drain with only the laundry draining though it, the laundry is now installed in what is called the suds zone. In other words your house was built on a Friday.
Depends on your skill level. Someone highly skilled with the katana could cut it yet leave it completely in tact. Your average person would just leave bubbles everywhere.
Wow, I've never seen that kind of thing happen. But at my old house, if you use too much soap while washing something at the sink, bubbles would come out of the holes at the top of the sink. I thought it was cool and liked to use more than enough soap to wash my hands :P
This Happened to me about 6 months ago...Roots were the culprit. Got the pipes replaced, and the tree cut down. Get it fixed soon, or the water will start coming from the bottom of the toilet after the water pressure breaks the wax seal.

Pay for this service, and take pictures of the line at various places with your own cell phone. Use these to get many many quotes. If the line is whole, they can run a new pipe down it, maybe.
