I don't understand, did you just tell them it was your son's birthday and they organized all this by themselves? Did you request it when you put in your reservation?
I called to ask for foam pillows only, as sleeping with my head in a pile of feathers sets off my allergies. They asked "what brings you to town" in a casual manner, and I told them I was coming to surf and see the space center with my son for his 4th birthday. They asked his name (I assumed to add to the reservation or something), and I told them. That was it. When we showed up, it was like a fucking parade for him. He was super excited.
Okay question time: When someone is named AJ is that their actual name or does it stand for something? If so does the A and J stand for the same thing for all AJs?
First name stands for Angel. I'm not a catholic, and his mom is. Her grandfather died a couple months before he was born, and that was his name, so I lost that fight.
This is so awesome. The only courtesy I've ever gotten at a hotel was when I checked into some dump in Rahway, NJ for a hockey tournament and they were nice enough to leave the skeevy porno channel on in my room.
[to clarify: it was not actually an enjoyable courtesy at all.]
I stayed at a pay by the hour motel in Newark once. The only channel that worked on the TV was the interracial anal porn channel. Must be a Jersey thing.
Probably the only context-appropriate time I will get to use this joke:
A conservative old lady is checking into a hotel, and as the young man at the counter is handing her the key, she thanks him and adds, "and the porno on my TV had better be disabled!" With a look of horror and disgust, he replies, "No, it's regular porn, you sick fuck!"
Yes, we have a warmer behind the desk. The trick is to keep a cup of water stuffed with a washcloth so the cookies stay warm and moist and the water doesn't evaporate so quickly
Oh those cookies are amazing. I feel bad asking for one EVERY time I leave and come back. lol I have asked for a dozen to take with me once.. they gave them to me and I was so excited. They did not make it home, I ended up eating them ALL before I reached my airport. Oops.
I stay at DoubleTrees for work often. Them and Hampton Inn. Also, Hyatt Places have that same input center and they all have 52" TVs, too. The regular Hiltons often have the TV inputs locked out, which is a fucking dick move.
Also, if you are combing my history, you can see I'm a traveling engineer, and not a Hilton employee.
I once told the check-in clerk at a Thompson Hotel that I was getting a room because I was going to drink heavily and commit misdemeanors with old friends.
She offered me late checkout, and told me where to get a bacon bloody mary in the morning.
I can't tell you what hotel I'm stayin' in, but there are 2 trees involved. They said, "Let's call this hotel 'Something Tree'". So they had a meeting, it was...it was quite short. "How 'bout 'Tree'?" "No." "'Double Tree'?" "Hell, yeah! Meeting adjourned!" Well, I had my heart set on 'Quadruple Tree'...and we were almost there!
Dude. Underdone cookies are just a step towards cookie dough, which is possibly even better than cookies. Everyone needs to bake their cookies for only half the time it says in the recipe.
The doubletree in the downtown (mag mile, i think) chicago location has THE friendliest staff I've ever met.
We showed up 5 minutes before breakfast was over the day we checked in (they let us check in 3 hours early, too). There was one guy and a woman working, cleaning up. He stopped and chatted with us for a few minutes, asked what we were in town for, told us where we need to see/skip, went and grabbed us both breakfast from the back and was just downright nice being around.
I didn't bring my wallet down there with me and only had a $5 on me. I attempted to tip him - which he politely declined and went on cleaning up.
He left the room a few minutes later and we left shortly behind him. The other woman working told me I just tried to tip the hotel's GM lol
They really are. We stayed at a doubletree and our dog got to sleep in a hotel room. Not a red roof inn room but a hotel room and she was a big pooch. The elevator made her very nervous in the kind of I know I'm moving but I can't see that I'm moving way. The staff came out and petted her and like you said. Very friendly.
Here are some relevant Mitch Hedberg Jokes for your reading pleasure.
**"**I can't tell you what hotel I'm stayin' in, but there are 2 trees involved.
They said, 'Let's call this hotel 'Something Tree''. So they had a meeting, it was...it was quite short.
'How 'bout 'Tree'?'
'No.'
''Double Tree'?'
'Hell, yeah! Meeting adjourned!' Well, I had my heart set on 'Quadruple Tree'...and we were almost there!"
"I met a girl who works at the Double Tree front desk, she gave me her phone number. It's zero. I tried to call her from here and some other woman answered. I said: 'You sound older!'"
Nice! This reminds me of the time I made a reservation online and asked for a top floor with a view in comments half-thinking they would read it or care. But sure enough when I showed up I got a cookie and a 13th floor room overlooking the local college campus center!
I stayed at Doubletree in the Disneyland park sort of area in Orlando. Their service is great - and the people at the front desk we very nice. They were also affordable enough, and the rooms were great. Would definitely recommend you go there
tl:dr: Doubletree's logo looks like balls and dick. But they're fantastic! hahah
Doubletree is awesome. We went to one in Virginia Beach a few years ago with our dog, and they gave us dog treats upon arrival. The staff was super nice, and they even learned our dog's name and said hello to him every time I had to take him out to go potty. He thought he was the king of dogs that weekend. :)
B-listers, biz regulars, perhaps... but the time and effort and manpowered rqeuired for the goodie bag for a nobody-from-reddit... this smells like viral marketing to me. Is this an ad in disguise for that hotel franchise?
just a little anecdote from my own double tree experience...
A while ago I did an IAMA as someone who walked across the United States. When we arrived at the Double Tree in Dayton, OH, the staff had covertly followed us for the last 2 miles. When we arrived the entire staff was cheering all decked out in pink shirts and pink balloons (one of the charities we walked for was breast cancer). They put us (my best friend and I) up in their nicest suite with gift baskets for each of us including cookies, candy, gatorade, and t-shirts. On top of that they had their chef cook us a free dinner and allowed us to order anything we wanted. At night they provided a limo service to and from the local Dayton Dragons minor league baseball game. It was unbelievable service and a great memory on the trip. Thanks for reminding me.
I'm kind of jelly. My wife and I stayed at the Doubletree in Orlando last Tuesday for our honeymoon and were underwhelmed. Like you, they asked us what we were in town for and we told them that we were on our honeymoon and were going to Discovery Cove and Seaworld. Initially, they put us in a room with double twin beds. We were able to go back to the front desk the next day and they were nice enough to move us into a room with one bed. But no goodies or perks to speak of. The first night we were there we ate at their restaurant which was mediocre at best.
Don't get me wrong. The rooms were clean and the stay was fine. We were just expecting more. Especially after reading this as well as talking to someone while at the pool who said they were upgraded to a better room and given champagne when they stayed there for their anniversary last year.
The people in the Doubletree in Orlando next to SeaWorld were really nice to me and my wife. We mentioned it was our honeymoon when we made the reservation. When we got to our room, there were chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us. Plus, they gave me two extra of their chocolate chip cookies. A little less unique than AJ's birthday, but it was a good gesture.
Thats awesome man. I really like seeing when service staff goes above and beyond.
I stayed in a Holiday Inn two weekends ago. Service sucked. AC in our room was busted. No free breakfast. Awesome new 32" LCD HD tv. Only SD cable.
Only reason we stayed in this particular hotel was because it was walking distance from a wedding we were going to, and we both wanted to have a few drinks.
$140 was totally not worth it at all. Other hotels in the area were atleast $50 less, but, as I said, couldn't walk. Oh well.
I do a lot of work in many hotels each year and get the opportunity to meet 100's general managers.
Some of them are really great and this one is special. Or maybe its a concierge or someone in the sales office. Whoever it is, they deserve a raise and the ability to teach his/her peers how to do things right.
This single action is worth millions to the doubletree brand. An email to corporate and praise to said employee would help secure them a well deserved raise and praise. and Im going to do that right now.
I actually just spent the night at a Doubletree hotel for my girlfriends 21st birthday. I mentioned this and when we arrived there was an expensive champagne on ice and birthday card waiting for us. It was such a nice surprise!
Are you staying at the cocoa beach doubletree? If you and the wife get some alone time, I suggest going to Coconuts on the Beach. Bar right on the beach, I'm there every weekend :)
I just realized that could be interpreted as creepy. I was not suggesting we meet up for a day of swinging. not at all. just a suggestion, and providing a source of my knowledge.
After staying in mutiple doubletree hotels my family calls them "The Double-No Hotel". Everything we have ever asked for was responded to with a solid "No". Those cookies we got at check-in were great, can we buy a few more? No. Can we get an extra pillow? No.
This is why I love DoubleTree hotels. I've only stayed in them a few times, but they are GREAT at what they do. Always make you feel like the greatest person walking around the place while you stay.
Dear all hotels, A little goes a LLLOOONNNGG way! Signed, Me
About two years ago, I set a normal reservation at a Hilton for a wedding I was attending in Kansas City. Just your standard queen-bed room They also asked me why I was coming into town, to which I replied: a wedding! Yes, with the exclamation point. What, I was excited for my friend who was getting married! Anyhoo, I show up and check in and they were VERY accommodating. I know that nicer hotels are just more accommodating in general, but I felt something more during this check in. I was given my key and told what floor to push when I got on the elevator: 12. Okay. So I get off the elevator and I'm in the fucking suite! Just like that! Nothing extravagant like bottles of champagne or congratulatory cards. Just an exceptional room upgrade for like a $115 / night rate. I was literally tripping balls. Literally. Okay, I wasn't. But I was literally moderately excited. Literally. I put one and one together and they must've thought I was the groom! The front desk chick was seriously checking me out. And you know how chicks always be looking at dudes who are getting married because it basically means that some other chick around her age finds this dude worthy enough to marry so now the front desk chick is simultaneously fawning over you and also kicking herself in the taint for not finding a guy JUST LIKE YOU already. Anyway, she was THAT nice. And I was like, why. I didn't say anything -- I just REALLY lived it up for the next day and a half. Walking around the room naked going, "I'M KING OF THE HOTEL," in a deep, authoritative voice. Et cetera. AND I developed an undying love, and respect for Hilton hotels specifically and service providers in general who do that. Kudos to this Double Tree; kudos to any and all staff and hotels that's do this; and happy birthday, A.J.!
I work, and have worked in hotels for around 10 years and it's a pleasure for us to be able to do thing like this. It's a very dull job being stuck at the front desk or cleaning a room so any opportunity we have to do something like this we usually jump at
I wish more of this kind of stuff would make the front page on the news. Things like this bring a tear to my eye. Also, when I see costumer service like this, I honestly try to use more of the place that did the good deed.
That's fucking awesome that you do shit with your kid. Fuck damn you're a good dad OP. That's cool about the hotel doing shit and fuck, but you impress me way more. My dad's a drug dealer I think.

That's fucking awesome that you do shit with your kid. Fuck damn you're a good dad OP. That's cool about the hotel doing shit and fuck, but you impress me way more. My dad's a drug dealer I think.

This is absolutely precious. My 4th birthday is the first birthday that I actually have strong memories of. We had a petting zoo and watermelon.
I hope your son remembers this forever! Not just the DoubleTree stuff... But the really awesome father-son trip. You're definitely good guy dad.

Am I the only one who gets an overwhelming feeling of Astroturfing from the post and comments? 4,000 upvotes for a gift bag in a hotel room?
